      Don't know quite how I stumbled across your video- but it's good, informative and well narrated. The end product is well done and doesn't appear amateurish at all. Good job.
      Looking at commenters suggesting mudflaps - I second that, but ensure what you end up with doesn't have the potential to become caught under the rear wheel when reversing off-road. If it did then it could be ripped off. Potentially taking the bumper or arch liner with it.

    I might suggest riveting something along the edge of the plastic at like 90 degrees to whatever is left of the cover. This return flange will ad rigidity and help to keep the cover from just tearing when you inevitably touch the bumper on something. A bit of rigid metal conduit or plastic even should work.
    You know what, go with the plastic. Just heat it up with something and bend it up. Should be an easy improvement to make on this mod.

Even I was surprised when I stepped back and looked at it by how natural it still looked. I'm sure most people would never even notice unless I was parked right next to an un modded Forester.

Gonna have to do the bumper thing as well, now that I've seen it!

    I'd used painter's tape, lined stuff up, anylized, criticized, then choked and still haven't gone back to get it done (on the GX).
    Ooh! Magnaflow! Nice!
    When I did my exhaust upgrade in the Superu, with a magnaflow, I also put a cherry bomb in-line near the rear diff protector. The cherry bomb acts as a resonator and quiets the more open exhaust if the 2.25" cashback with magnaflow, just deep suby rumble.
    Nice work again, dude!

  • @bruceyyyyy
    @bruceyyyyy Před 4 lety +2

    Looking good! I used a dremel the first time to cut my bumper but found my jig saw with a metal blade worked well and didn't melt the plastic.
    I'm so glad you switched to a single muffler. I don't understand what the point of the duals are other than added cost and complexity.
    One last thought:
    With the spare tire well now the lowest point I would recommend a hitch to act as a rear skid (that's what mine is for) or something to reinforce the floor plan. Even HDPE/UHMW would be helpful.
    That metal is SUPER thin and can be deformed by hand hand. I wouldn't count on it holding up if you drag it like in the opening clips.
    Good video!

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +3

      Yes, in fact there were a couple of metal tabs that come off of that construction which held clips for the rear bumper skin, and I simply folded them back out of the way with my fingers, LOL. I'll have to see how it goes. Hard departure hits like I show in the beginning are relatively rare but I'm sure I'll manage to bang it up. If I had someplace else for my spare to go, I wouldn't mind that whole well getting flattened upward so you don't see it hanging down back there. Maybe some reinforcement under there will be my first welding project! Not that I know how to weld or have any welding equipment. Maybe one day though...I've been inspired by some of the CZcamsrs I follow.

    Hello! I think, that you need to change metall bolts to plastic clips with self-tapping screws, because if you catch an obstacle with your bumper, you will lose your back bumper and all plastic in the wheel arch with it beyond recovery. Plastic clips needed to broke only them, when you catch anything in offroad. In this case them are boking and also saving your most important spare parts.

    I was putting off trimming my bumpers on my 09 FTX. I want to modify some jeep bumpers to fit the Subaru. I had some dangly pieces as well. I just used a box cutter, scored it, scored it again and then sliced off the fat!

    Regarding 2 vs. 1 muffler, I don't agree with your assessment that double muffler is not necessary. While I don't know for sure, since Subaru is always penny pinching to control cost, there is a good chance 2 mufflers are needed.
    It is common to have a single pipe come from the front and for it to split into 2 mufflers. Keep in mind that mufflers provide flow resistance and 2 mufflers provide half the flow resistance than 1.

      In subsequent models of the Forester - running the exact same engine - Subaru moved back to a single exhaust/single muffler. Everything I've read over the years has suggested the dual muffler setup does not provide a functional benefit. I decided to trust the muffler guy, who is widely considered the best in town. It wasn't my assessment, it was his that the modification would provide equivalent flow/backpressure. So far I've been unable to perceive any difference at all in performance one way or the other. It's done now, we'll see how it goes! :-)

    Love the videos! I'm actually flying into Eugene today to pick up my "soft roading" 4Runner. I hope I don't get in trouble for not using it properly.

    COST? ...if you don't mind us asking, how much was it for the custom muffler install? It looks like the guy did a really good job.
    Great video! 👍

    this should also improve your fuel efficiency. Because that lip acted as an air scoop causing drag. So this really is a win win situation. Nice mod!

    I think you did an amazing job! Might consider a custom made bumper on the light weight and as a future option. I think you should make a video about how you do your maintenance or how you go about your maintenance on your Forrester because they are known to have problems such as burning oil head gaskets etc. I’m curious as to how you handle those on the trail not so much being stuck but actual car failure

      I don't really do anything extra beyond keeping very close tabs on oil consumption, and staying on top of routine maintenance. This particular Subaru engine is not prone to head gasket failure, but does tend to consume oil in certain conditions, so I keep a close eye on it.
