What's great about this show (besides being volleyball-beginner friendly and amazing character-work) is that, despite it's realism, the stakes feel as high as any shounen nekketsu. A must-watch in my humble opinion.

Haikyu is the japanese word for volleyball although it's not used as much now these days.
I actually didn't care about volleyball at all prior to watching this show. Now I play pick up volleyball 2-3 times/week and it's all because of Haikyu!! It's truly an exceptional experience. Haikyu!! was so impactful in Japan that it reversed the dying volleyball scene in the country. Most of the Japanese players have watched it and are fans of the show. They even played the different openings at the Tokyo Olympics during Japan's games.
It is truly one of the most tangibly influential anime out there right now.

But ever since the manga and anime of Haikyuu was made, it made a huge impact to the country and the popularity of the sport increased.

Haikyuu is definitely a great feel-good show to watch in between darker shows. It has masterful character work (the blond guy with glasses is probably one of the best examples of awesome character development I've seen), great "action" sequences whose stakes derive from how attached to the characters you feel and a plot that feels both simple and interesting.

The background music remix in your intro was a nice touch. :) That particular track is actually a pretty substantial plot point through Season 4. I love this series, but it took until about Episode 9 for me to be hooked. As a Japanese teacher, it's also really rare among anime in having realistic language. If you want to learn any Japanese by imitation, this is one of the few series where you wouldn't sound like a cringey sociopath, so that's a plus, haha.

"Haikyuu" is another ancient way of saying volleyball in Japanese, if I'm not wrong
And yesss, there are a looot of characters, and the anime tries to show about them all, explaining that everyone is good in their own way, that everyone makes mistakes, and that to win you need to dedicate yourself
For me, it's one of the ways this anime makes everything more interesting :)

Man I love this anime. I don’t like sport, never saw a sports anime before this, and I knew nothing about Volleyball before I started Haikyuu. It’s very good.
It’s exactly what you’d expect. There are no superpowers. No sudden explosions of violence. It’s about volleyball, teamwork, and character development. That’s it. It’s not over yet, S5 is coming out in the next year or so I believe.
It’s pretty lighthearted and chill. But also really hype at times!
Also in terms of animation, the episodes look the same as the openings.
And for songs, 1 and 3 were both done by Spyair (who made a couple of the best Gintama openings), 4,5,6 were made by Burnout Syndromes (who have done a lot of different openings eg Dr Stone OP1), 2 was made by Sukima Switch (who made the 3rd FMAB opening, Golden Time Lover). And 7 was made by Super Beaver (who I haven’t heard any other anime openings by).
Also my favourite OP was 4, Fly High.

It's the first time I'm watching any of your reactions but for what you're saying you would love Haikyuu. Loved your reaction so totally on board if you decide to react to the endings or the whole show. What everyone in the comments is saying it's true. Haikyuu is pretty realistic, of course it's still an anime but no crazy superpowers, and the volleyball is accurate (I knew nothing about it before starting and now, thanks to Haikyuu I often watch and can perfectly follow real games). It's a feel-good, highly motivational anime and not only you end up loving all the characters in the main team (which name means crow in Japanese, that's why there are so many crow images) but also get to know pretty well (and end up loving too) a good amount of rival teams. Even if you don't end up reacting to the episodes I seriously recommend you watch it, you will enjoy it for sure 😊

ngl haikyuu is prob the best sports anime I've read/watched. it indulges in its fair share of genre tropes, but it adds enough realism and depth to the characters to keep it from getting anywhere near tiring. I'm not an athlete and knew very little about volleyball going in, but the cast & the themes of the story still really resonated with me. I'd love to see your reaction to the series - I tend to prefer more subdued and thoughtful reactors in general, but especially with haikyuu where character relationships, motivations, and growth paths are so important!
also, the title of the show is just an archaic term for volleyball, from the kanji 排球 lol. in Japanese people usually call the sport the shorthand of the english borrowed word, "baree" (バレー).
if you haven't already looked this up, the manga is concluded but the anime isn't. there are 4 seasons & we're waiting on season 5.

Just as you said, the anime is pretty realistic, doesn't have anything like super powers or anything like that. This was in my recomendations, its the first video i see of your channel; i really like Haikyuu.
About what you said about the type of reactor that you are: Haikyuu often has a bunch of symbolisms that i would like to see if you pick up on them, they are ones that escape me until i see a comment in a reactor pointing it out.
And dont worry about your knowledge of volleyball, a lot of us entered with little to none knowledge, and Haikyuu will eventually explain you things here and there; especially the basics.
About how real is the volleyball in the anime: I watch other people react to Haikyuu, mainly people with actual knowledge in voleyball, and they often say that the anime is actually pretty accurate in the volleyball basis, obviously not perfect all the time, but its gotten a lot of praise for its accuracy, and some reactors have shared their own anecdotes that are similar or felt the same as some things in Haikyuu.
About the character development: there is a lot of that! There is a fan-favorite "mini" arc that starts in season 2 and "finishes" in season 3.
About the meaning of the word "Haikyuu": For what i remember its like a less used name for voleyball in japanese.
Haikyuu really knows how to make voleyball interesting! The initial goal for the manga was to make more people join volleyball teams because there was a lack of interest in Japan, and it work out even better than what they expected!
The anime is not finished yet, but the manga is, so be carefull with spoilers, especially because there is a timeskip, so try to add "pre timeskip" here and there if you really need to look something up, to avoid spoilers.
Also you are not really alone, Fly High is a favorite among fans.
Im subscribing and looking forward to you reacting to Haikyuu!

This is a very engaging and inspirational series. I never played any sports (aside from gym classes) and never had interest in it. Honestly, I just happened to watch this show by chance. My cousin brought a copy of the first 2 seasons once when I was in junior high school and me and my group of cousins decided to sit and watch just because. After that, we didn't even notice that we've been sitting in front of the television for almost a day. That's how hooked we got on the show. I got into Haikyuu with hesitation but from different reasons than most. I am a huge volleyball fan, I love the game, I try to attend as many proffesional games as possible, I was at 2014 World Championship finals, 2021 European Championship finals and many many more, including league games. Also played it a lot when I was younger. When I started to watch Haikyuu I was almost sure it wouldn't capture true beauty of the sport, ruin it with some superpowers or power of friendship. Instead I'm here looking for new reactors to witness how another one will fall in love with the show as much as I did. I wish someone would make a compilation of reactors saying "that's just volleyball, how interesting can it be?", "I don't see how they can make few seasons without being repetitive" and then same people crying from emotions, stating that it somehow bacame their top5 anime. Not to mention it is impossible not to smile while watching, it just makes you feel good.
If you'll react to Haikyuu I will be here for sure!

The series hasn’t finished. There’s still about 3-4 more manga story arcs left to animate. We’re still waiting for season 5 to be announced. Currently there are 85 episodes + 3 canon OVA’s, 2 of which adapt a story arc from the manga.

I’d love to see you react to haikyuu! I also had little to no knowledge about volleyball going in aside from PE growing up, but this show does a really good job of teaching you what you need to know organically. I also tend to prefer shows with darker themes/conflicts and never thought I’d be so invested in a volleyball anime, but this show is just really something special. It’s passionate, uplifting, and just puts you in a good mood. The main thing that sold me was the character writing though. Everyone here matters and has a story, whether it’s the opposing team, a manager, or even someone on the bench, they all contribute in some way. But it doesn’t get bogged down, and the action, music, themes and imagery just tie it all together so beautifully. The character development isnt just a one and done type of thing either. I could go on and on about literally any of them, and if you like compelling antagonists, haikyuu has got them in spades. I think the fandom is actually pretty evenly distributed across the various teams in picking their favs, which just goes to show how carefully they’ve been crafted. And as the cherry on top, the further you get into this series, the more there is to analyze. The character arcs and themes/life lessons they and their teams represent are what have solidified this series as one of my favorite shows. The anime itself isn’t complete yet, we’re actually just getting into some of my favorite parts of the story (because it keeps getting better and better), but I hope you give it a chance someday!

Heyyy there, I’m gonna write down my thoughts through the video here. Just some comments on this and that ^^
    - The intro is not too long, it’s perfect
    - “[…] anime reaction channels are definitely not the type of thing people would typically subscribe to.” - Me: *presses sub button and the bell just to prove otherwise*
    - You’re analyzing everything and I love that!
    - And you’re guesses are pretty accurate as well, or at least really understandable and logical
    - My favorite openings are 4 and 5 I guess. But mostly looking at the music and not the visuals, because I love these songs and they have been in my playlist for so long already :3 (and because I love the visuals in all of them)
    - “To the Top” is actually a fourth season and the anime is still not finished yet. So probably there will be one or two more seasons. But not even the 5th is announced yet D:
    - You learn so much about volleyball while watching this show if you didn’t know anything before. I think that’s pretty cool. And I actually started playing volleyball because of it :)
    - This anime is sooo emotional and exciting, even though they are just playing volleyball (and without superpowers or anything). That’s insane
    - The animations are awesome in this anime. Like about 3 or 4 times I almost cried just because of the animations and the emotions they caused.
    - “Not a very expressive guy, is he?” - stating facts right here
    - It was my fist sports anime and I loved it from the very beginning already
    - Overall opinion about the anime: It’s just insane, it’s my favorite and I would love to watch you reacting to it.
    - Overall opinion about you: This is how reactions work, just so! You’re almost talking more than you’re watching the video. That’s how it workes imo. Great job, keep up the great stuff. ^^
Don’t mind my not perfectly accurate English :3 🇺🇸
    Anyways, greetings from Germany! 🇩🇪

the one player with a different color uniform plays a special position called a 'libero'. A libero is a defensive specialist who is not allowed to serve or rotate to the front line. In order to be easily identifiable by the referee they wear a different uniform, usually an inverted version of the teams colors.

How to introduce this show without spoiling... Well, regarding the two main characters, the story follows Hinata, the short orange guy - who loves volleyball because of his idol Little Giant that showed the world that even if you're not tall enough, you can still play volleyball and be awesome enough. Yeah, his high jumping power is his good point and his height is the highlight. Otherwise he is kind of newbie to volleyball, so there's a lot lot of growth (the first opening where he hits the ball with eyes closed was actually a big thing - showing how awesome his trust into the other guy is, and how strong and cool the other protagonist actually is). And the other guy - Tobio Kageyama, is a genius setter (hmm, he sets balls close to net so that his team can spike them, he loves this position) who used to be very good, but because his team couldn't catch up with him nor because he could properly communicate with them, Kageyama was abandoned by his team and "left alone" on the court without anyone hitting his balls. So yeah, there's a story about growth from these two characters around these issues, and how they become a great combo.
The backstory is that Hinata and Kageyama met in junior high competition in one game as enemies, and both remembered each other. It's funny because Hinata planned to beat Kageyama and considered him as his rival as he enrolled this school, but the story starts as they end up at the same school Karasuno High (yeah, literally means black crow, their mascot you often see) and now have to work together. Because of their past issues they don't really get along at first as rivals, but later on they go to become a famous duo (ah, their bickering goes all the way to the end of story too, but in a good and funny way). Hinata is someone who says to Kageyama that he will always be there to hit his balls and that makes Kageyama slowly step out of his shadows while Kageyama becomes a setter that lets Hinata be able to hit cool spikes, as Hinata always wanted. This is about the beginning of story as these two start a journey with their team to play to the top, going through various competitions, meeting various teams and growing even more. There indeed are lot characters, but you can easily remember them as you watch the story. They aren't just extras as many shows create them, they all have cool and different stories so you can't get bored of Haikyuu easily. As main team grows, so do others - which is really cool since this show was more about volleyball than just few characters, making one really want to go out to play it.
So yeah, most of this show is about playing volleyball and showing growth of youth, with every match having its own cool rivalry making one unable to stop watching and anticipating for more.
P.S. the blond guy really is the cool guy, but he also has that 'I really want to hit him' vibe. The seniors are also quite cool and interesting. The guy with different dress is a team 'libero'. He's mostly responsible for receiving the ball, is never in front of the net and never servers - instead, other players substitute him during his serving phrase and he later goes back in. The dumb thing isn't their hideout, it has something to do with one of their schools last rivals Nekomata (their mascot is cat), so it's like cats vs crows fighting at a dumpster thing. It's pretty cool.
