TV DUEL: "How do you think you did?" Joe Biden's answer leaves us speechless
After a shaky performance by US President Joe Biden in the TV debate against challenger Donald Trump, transatlantic experts believe a short-term candidate change is possible among the Democrats. "The question is: what are the Democrats doing? I think there is panic at the moment," said Sudha David-Wilp of the US foundation German Marshall Fund Berlin on Friday in the ZDF "Morgenmagazin". She could imagine a new nomination at the party conference in August or even before.
Whether the Democrats really want to go into the election with Biden is something they will have to decide at their party conference, said the Federal Government's Transatlantic Commissioner, Michael Link (FDP), to the "Tagesspiegel" (Saturday). "The elections in the USA will be won in the middle. The Democrats need a candidate who can win in this middle, who gives them hope and vision and who can overcome the polarization of American society."
Trump appears aggressive, Biden appears erratic
The television debate on Thursday was seen as a test for the 81-year-old Democrat Biden. During the roughly 90-minute long exchange, however, he stumbled over his words regularly and seemed powerless. Trump, on the other hand, attacked Biden with aggressive rhetoric as usual and repeated old accusations and lies.
"It was actually ironic because President Biden wanted this debate," said David-Wilp. "But unfortunately it backfired." At the party convention in Chicago, the incumbent president is to be officially nominated as the Democratic candidate. An obvious alternative is Vice President Kamala Harris, explained David-Wilp. "But her approval ratings are even weaker."

The Democrats must consider who is best to prevent "Trump from coming back into office with his usual methods - allegations, insults, distortions, outright lies," said FDP politician Link. His foreign policy statements are worrying. "He characterizes NATO as a kind of security company where we pay and he protects us as he pleases." Germany and Europe must prepare for a possible Trump election victory in November. This includes strengthening the EU and the European pillar of NATO.
