  • We bought some new tech to bring to Mexico City in June: A Blink 4 Outdoor camera to record sunsets from the balcony, an eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi router, and two Amazon Echo Dots, which we'll use as Wi-Fi extenders. For now, we're testing them in Pennsylvania, but we can't wait to set them up in our Roma Norte apartment.

I use the blink (a previous version) both at the house in Seattle and here in Mazatlán. They're great for outdoor use - I have the base hanging by the window, and it gives my camera on the roof enough of a signal to work (most of the time). I have the camera on the roof because we have roof jumpers who steal the tinaco lids! The only irritating thing is when spiders decided to make a home near the camera, and then set it off every night! When you're not there it's hard to clear cobwebs!

We use a first generation Blink outdoor camera at our place in the DR. Battery life is amazing but it doesn't do much. We wanted to install it after a hurricane. Our use case with the original one is basically a peep hole into the weather conditions which is definitely worth the cost of the product. Another additional benefit is you usually get a notification when it goes offline which equates to a power out notification or an Internet out notification. That is it's real value for us these days.

💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜 that is so cool.. when we moved from the country to a bigger, but still rural town - I missed our views of nothing... I do know when we buy our son wants security cameras and mum and dad have been tasked with researching that - so I'll be watching your set-up and taking notes... he just wants something that he can view and record, we were looking at video doorbells and adding extra camera's around the perimeter.. what are the "rules" in Mexico as far as filming. Pretty sure over here open space, public area we're good to go, but I know some places you have to tell people they're on camera.

No one is going to be on camera. This is a view six stories up looking directly down the street at that level. It's just a view with no people.

Have you every had your bags searched by custom agents in Mexico? If they did search your bags, what would happen if they see all the tech you and your wife travel with? Is it all carry on? Excited for the release of the book. Safe travels Sunday Paul.

When flying, you're allowed to bring $500 worth of things down. If I think there's a question about it, I bring receipts. If it's something used then I go on ebay and print out a closed auction for that item so they can see what the 'used' value is.

Our friends have. The big concern is that you're bringing electronics to sell. But we've never been stopped. Not yet.
      It is all carry-on, yes.
      Thanks!

This video inspired me to dig out my 4th Gen Echo Dots and use them to extend my Eero wifi.
‼But it appears that this feature is not available outside the US‼.
I'm going to try a little more testing (with a whole-home VPN router 'behind' my Eero - to try to make it think it is in the US)
Paul, it might be worth doing all the setup (setting up the Eero, and adding the Dots to the network) while you are still at home in the US.
Excellent video. I'm very interested in expat/travel/nomad tech. Many thanks to you both.

I did configure the Echo Dots at home, but getting the Eero working will depend on whether I have time. We're only home for a few days, and sporadically, before we go to Mexico. But I will try, thanks.
