I'm a self taught artist, I don't know anything about art and I wanna pursue it. I'm from small town and my school doesn't have art subject so I need to know more about it before I go to University and I don't know where to start
The internet is your best friend! You can go on websites like the bubblegum club to see the art scene now in South Africa, watching videos from other artists and seeing how they work are also good. And keep on creating art! You don't need to "know" a lot before you study it at University, you'll learn more when you get there. For now, just keep creating and seeing what you need to apply for Uni :) (A lot of my friends in Fine Arts never took it in high school and they are really talented so you don't need to worry!)
Wow, this is very helpful. I find the portfolio making process so stressful because there are so many mixed messages everywhere. Some people's portfolios are full of writing and don't have titles for the artworks and some are like yours where it's the exact opposite. As someone who never had any formal training in art it's so hard to try and understand what these admissions people want ;")
THISSSSSSSSSSS
I was discouraged at first because theirs so many vids on creating a website, once you said pdf I felt comfortable listening to your advice. Shoutout to you thank you for helping me. I aspire to paint murals in the city of Seattle and share my canvas work with the community gallery s 📯📯 :))))
This is all great advice!!! I still haven't made any portfolios but I've been wanting to do it soon- I mainly do character designs and comic art, so if I brought my art to someone looking for concept art, fine art, etc I wouldn't get it because obviously thats not where I focus on. So if you want a job with character design- include character references and character art, if you want a job for fine art, probably only keep fine art in your portfolio.
Thank you so much, this explains literally everything I wasn’t sure about ❤
i am applying for architecture, ive been looking for a good portfolio/ example to look to, thank u sm. i got so happy to see that you're a fellow south african :)
I'm so glad it was helpful! :) All the best with applications, fellow Safa ☺
Thank you for this video my sister …one love 🇯🇲😊🙏🏾
Thank you so much. I am a self taught artist and i really don’t know what to do and how to do it. Thank you dear ❤
Greatly explained 👍 thank you so much
VERY HELPFUL, THANK YOU
Very good and clear. Enjoyed
Congratulations on your award 🔥👏💯
Thank you!
Thank You!
This is a very helpful video!!
but I have a lot of questions and I am very confused about how the process works. especially in my case, I am a self-taught traditional artist and I come from a homeschooling background so I have no high school art club/class experience.
I'm not a painter but I love to draw and have improved greatly over the years. I would love to get my hands on any information that I can to make my future in the art career easier and improve on any skills I can.
I love technical studies. Most my art are studies. I just like the act of drawing itself and making things too conceptual takes me out of it. I get my meditation from that path itself. It’s not in the nose, it’s in the artwork, in the rendering of the metal it’s in the thought of the line. The path of design and render. Art is in itself my all and end all. Why reduce it to “concept”?
It really was helpful thank you very much Rumbo!😇😇😇😇
So glad you found it helpful!!
The fluency alone 😅❤
hey im 13 and hopeing to go into St. Stephens Alberta for art therapy is it too early to start makeing a portfolio and what are some tip like what classis should i do in high school (im in grade 8 ) Thanks :)

I’m so glad!
Very very helpful piece. Thank you
I'm glad it was helpful!
so how does the interview thingie work? do you get accepted before the interview? do they do it virtually (the interview)?
thank you!
You're welcome!
I want to ask though, what about drawing from observations videos, such as you watch as you draw things that are in colour, does black and white apply on drawing objects which could be a colourful display before you? Thanks buddy.
Thank you
Glad this helped!
Can I use dark colors for the background (such as a dark purple) and bright colors for the text descriptions (such as a bright orangish red) ??
@Rumbo Mercy, I need ur help, if u can help , See I just Started my First year at University of Botswana, I Wanted to do Fine Arts, I literally think I have mistake. Does Fine arts Fall Under Art and Design , cause I have not seen Fine Arts in my first Semester
You look like a barbie ❤❤
This was so helpful, I will be starting making my portfolio for art college next year and I really needed this!
I do have a question it's quite basic but, is there a limit of work you can add in the portfolio or you can add as much as you want, more or less?
you can do as many as you want but it's best not to put too many
some colleges have a set amount but most seem to be 10-20 pieces
I’m applying for a summer art program in Paris to see if I want to study there in college, but I’m not that knowledgeable about art. This video helped me with making a portfolio but I was wondering, if I had a piece of art I was extremely happy with, but I drew it in a paperback sketchbook, how would I submit that on a pdf portfolio? And is it okay if a piece of art is something I drew from a show because I love the how the character was written and how much I relate to him and his mindset?
Fingers crossed for the program! If you are able to access a printer, I would scan it and then crop the edges to make sure the sketchbook isn’t shown but I’d say add it to the portfolio because of how proud you are of it :)
should I also add comics for the portfolio? i'm trying to go to a art school to improve Narrative illustration
"Anything.... Anything AT ALL"
This was very informative thank you❤☺️🙏🏾….what was the page dimensions of your portfolio?
I’m glad! For the pdf I just used A4 :)
Which format should we use for an online portfolio document and motivation letter, I applied at witts
Hi! If they require you to submit online, it may be best to submit as a pdf. Although just double check their instructions so I don’t lead you to do something incorrectly 😅
What is the better way to procide into your interview
600 subs already😁
Wait I only saw now omg yay😭😭😭
can you help me select my art work gor pirtfolio?????
I just wanted to ask do art schools except digital art?
Mine does! I and a couple of my friends do digital, but I recommend you email the schools you’re looking at to double check
im abt to audition this weekend for the high school of my dreams and im nervous because i feel like im not getting in, im supposed to take an art porfolio and i didnt make it i drew in my sketchbook i didnt understand the instructions and now idk what to do i have 4 days left i really need help
Omg what happened? Did it work out fine ❤
why is no one talking about the dreamtrain being from bts’ spring day mv
You have a good eye🌚🌚
😭what about digitally made artworks cause I'm a self taught artist
For my digital works in a portfolio, I usually leave out the dimensions and put "Digital illustration" or whatever type of digital work it is :) Unless you plan on printing them, then you could try "digital print" followed by the dimensions of the print you intend to print them in. Hope this helps a bit :)
Hi girl I just comment on your video that was a long time ago but I really want to know if you’re a beginner and you don’t know your art style but you’re really good at painting and certain things like oil painting water painting animations🙏🥹😅 I feel very confused and lost because I don’t know exactly what I want I know this sounds confusing but how do you start
Hi! I just responded to your other comment teehee.
But I want to add that finding your own style takes a loooong time for most (heck, I'm still trying to find mine.) It takes time because you discover it as you make art and look at art that makes you feel something. You definitely do not need to 100% know your art style before you study art.
There is no exact recipe to discovering your style. I don't know how to explain it but in my experience, it comes from the work you do over the years, the research you do, personal experiences, etc.
😊 thank you so much
