The Dire Consequences of Astronomy Education by Godlike Super Beings.

  • Astronomers have a hard time communicating the scale of the universe, with objects being so far away it's common to bring things down to Earth to make it easier for the general public to grasp.
    It's a lot easier to imaging the size of a space rock if you compare it to a city, or a white dwarf compared to the Earth or sun.
    I imagine the consequences if these objects were really moved this close together.
    Universe Sandbox 2 lets me simulate some of these with glorious graphical destruction.

    • @rodrigoserafim8834
      @rodrigoserafim8834 Před 5 lety +91

      I'm more impressed in how they actually managed to program it. Did they program all the possible interaction of two body types they could think of, or are they actually using planet composition to determine the most likely physical-chemical reaction that will trigger. That added to some kind of fragmentation algorithm based on density properties or something.
      But object transitions have to be hand coded for sure.

    • @Codiac300

    • @danieljensen2626
      @danieljensen2626 Před 5 lety +43

      @@Codiac300 Yeah, but it's a lot to add into your physics model to actually check the densities and material properties of the two objects to see if either of them will break up. I'm pretty sure the equations for that are quite complicated. Especially since they seem to be accounting for the rate of breakup as well, although I'm sure the graphics are just sorta standardized rather than being exactly simulated which bits will break off.

    I've seen several comments (for obvious reasons) concerning Q and his abilities relevant to this video.
    I picked one and replied to it, but my reply became long enough I felt it may be worth posting generally.
    The original question was essentially "If Q can do all this, why is he interested in our intrepid voyagers?"
    My reply is below:
    Well, to be honest, he's interested in it because we're human, but that's kind of meta and anthropocentric. In a more in-universe sense, Q could easily do exactly what we're seeing here: play Universe Sandbox for real but then roll back time such that things are as they were. We would never know he did, because we don't have the senses to notice it. The thing is, even though each instance of destruction would be somewhat unique, just as each fireworks display is unique, the detonation of fireworks is understood by a pyrotechnician. Q would know what would happen to inanimate matter because he knows what will happen when it is exposed to certain conditions. I mean, WE know what happens to it well enough to make a game of it, and we're hardly omniscient.
    However, animate matter is different. If you expose, say, a human to the conditions of the surface of the sun, the outcome is entirely predictable. However, within easily understandable physical limits, our outcomes are much less predictable.
    Assume a purely physical model of humanity, Q could easily see the map of a person's nervous system, know what they are capable of thinking, and still be left in the dark about what they're actually considering at any given time.
    The Enterprise is the flagship and must then be crewed by person's with exemplary minds. The more connections a mind has, the more unpredictable (read: interesting) the human outcome will be.
    Thus people are more interesting than supernovas and Sociology and Psychology are the highest and most difficult of the sciences.

    I wonder how many science teachers announce to their class “For today’s lesson, we will be discussing this Scott Manley video”.

    Good video, thanks Scott. When I see Venus high in the sky I sometimes think that someday the sun will expand to the size of Venus' orbit so where you see Venus it will be the edge of the sun. I gotta get universe sandbox and try that out.

    "Imagine you are some godlike superbeing"- like everyone that's ever played sims.
    Started watching this thinking "oh Scott, have we been playing with universal sandbox again?"..

    I once read a book about some Moon Earth conflict and they threw rocks from Moon to Earth. And people went to watch the rock landing. Seems something that people would really do. Would not if they had seen this kind of videos. Keep educating, it's both fun and, well, educating.

      Didn't Brianna Wu when she was a Democratic candidate for Congress, claim private space companies could be dangerous since they would have the power to destroy the Earth with rocks sent from the Moon.
