The commentary in this video regarding the Poles is total nonsense and it wasn't their first battle either far from it, they are portrayed as reckless yahoos who get taught a lesson by the "elite" germans, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact Alexander considered the Poles the finest troops of 8th Army (his own words), which is why they were reserved for the toughest job -Monte Cassino itself. Just as an example 17 Sherman tanks of the Polish 6th armoured regiment are mentioned (this happened at Piedimonte San Germano) but no commentary on the entire Canadian Tank regiment knocked out before them? The Polish tanks were knocked out by AT guns at Piedimonte san Germano (at the time the strongest fortified position in Italy) and not by a Panther tank or fortified Panther turrets (which were knocked out by heavy artillery in the 2nd day of fighting). The numbers of captured FJ units by the Poles is completely underreported, need I go on, this whole video screams Wehraboo to me, just highlighting some of the BS in this video and there is a lot of it. This misinformation video should be taken down, I study this battle.
First off, he didn’t say it was the first battle for all the Poles involved. But it was indeed te first time for a number of the Poles.
Second, just because they were deemed ‘the finest soldiers’ by Alexander, didn’t mean they didn’t showcase too much bravery and not enough caution (the later of which is most certainly not a sign of ‘cowardice’).
Third, to say this makes Polish soldiers look bad is like saying it made the US II Corps soldiers look bad. Or British 4th Division soldier look bad.
Lastly, there are actual sources for this video. Sources that he most kindly puts in the video description. How about you direct your many, many complaints to those and the guys who made them, eh?

You quote "sources" but had you have known what you were talking about you would have known that most of the Polish soldiers fighting at Monte Cassino had already fought in the 1939 campaign in Poland and the Polish army was already a crack outfit before the war - before they retrained under the British - this after they had been pulled out of & survived Soviet death camps already - find me an allied unit that went through such experience and training. The Polish II Corps was arguably the finest force not just in the Italian campaign but on the entire allied side worldwide, this thought is echoed by all who witnessed the unit in action, and includes distinguished figures such as Harold Macmillan future Prime Minister of the UK, Field Marshal Harold Alexander and more.
You are also woefully ignorant of the geopolitics of the time, by 1944 the UK & US had wanted to distance themselves from their Polish ally as they were at the time enamored with the Soviet Union. As Poland & the Soviet Union were enemies in the same allied camp, Poland was politically inconvenient and every political and propaganda effort was made to paint the Poles as either incompetent (and where successful) as reckless. These stereotypes have gladly been taken up by the author of this video, but what was witnessed at a military level was something quite different.
As for cowardice, difficult to comprehend such a thing from someone who was already highly trained before the war, had stared death in the face in a Soviet Gulag & survived, had retrained under the British, and was now fighting in the full knowledge that his country and family were being ravaged and raped by Germany, (more than 1/5 of Poland's population died in the war).
So perhaps before you start to try to challenge someone who not only studies this battle, but has access to Polish & British regimental sources not available to the average "web surfer historian", you might consider doing your homework first.

@@901Sherman I've read Ten Armies in Hell several times, I have the book in front of me. I've also read many many books on this subject as well as regimental archives. So instead of sprouting bs why don't you read what I've written and go and read some yourself, have you even read anything on Cassino? The Legend of the Green Devils is a wehraboo book for wehraboos. This video should be taken down, end of.
I have 10 Armies in Hell as well, in E-Book form at least. And at the very least, I find it commendable that it tries too tackle various different units involved (especially tricky given their numbers and nationalities.
Correction, that's was not the first fight for Poles, this corpus fight in Tobruk
Tha Carpahtian Division fought in Tobrouk (and if I remember well at that time it was a Brigade), not the Kresowa Division.
I enjoyed the series about the Monte Cassino battle. This was very awesome.
Having in mind how English 'met expectations of being Polish Allies in 1939' it was no surprise that Poles may have some doubts about British courage. And they proved that they were ready to take this bloody monastery or die trying.

@@stef1896 I could make the greatest battle in the European theatre only in complete 3D and in a series of 3-4 videos. I wouldn't be satisfied with anything less than that. And it's actually planned for this winter. I'm just not sure if I will actually do it.

@@dasboot5903 I had two great uncles from Silesia that were drafted into the Wehrmacht, escaped to later join the Polish army and fought at Monte Cassino. There were lots of Polish Silesians drafed by the Germans and many later got away and joined the Polish side fighting with the British

Yeah why did he portray the Polish as if they ruined the entire operation? I have never seen that scenario before? Poles are usually portrayed as heroes of the entire assault. Gonna need to read more I guess.

Thanks for this amazing video, it is the first one on Monte-Cassino I found relating properly the respective roles of different divisions, cheers to the efficiency of Algerian divisions! Note they were mixed with ethnic algerians, and french, and that the main CEF (Corps Expeditionnaire Francais ) which contains troops from Tunisia (not mentionned in the video cos maybe embedded within some of the mentioned divisions) , Algeria , France , and the moroccan goumiers.These divisions were fit for mountain fighting.

@@deadfly122 That's ironic, German pointing out others not taking PoWs, it's almost like Germans had not been murdering "subhuman" soldiers since the very first days of the war... Poles in 1939, senegalese tirailleurs in 1940 in France etc.
Either way, Poles captured about 30 wounded soldiers, who were left by their comrades because they were unable to move on their own. And no, they didn't murder them. Unless you have a believable source saying otherwise... which is doubtful.
@@Kopyrda I have no significant source. Ive read it in a book about fallschirmjägers which was based on real facts. But that's not what I wanted to point out. There's nothing glorious in winning a fight while taking a couple thousands casualties in a bunch of days
@@deadfly122 I agree that boasting about Monte Cassino is weird, especially that there were so many greater battles, like holding Mont Ormel ridge (Falaise Pocket). However, that's not the point I was referring to, only supposed murder of PoWs. Not only there is no significant source to prove it, but Germans had been doing exactly the same since the very beginning of war. Not only soldiers from Waffen SS, as some choose to believe, but even the ones from Wehrmacht. Like Rommel's soldiers murdering black PoWs in 1940 in France.

The polish 2nd corp drew heavily from the released gulag prisoners. They had not been trained, just sent to fight when released from the gulags, upon Stalin switching sides to join the allies. Not sure “lack of discipline” was their problem. Many didn’t care for their own safety and few were trained. The allies should be grateful they didn’t just turn around and walk away.
You made the Polish look bad shame on you with this not accurate information about the Polish they played a crucial part in this battle.

Mark Clark made many mistakes. He was obsessed with capturing Rome before the British. He hated his boss Alexander. Another reason for his lackluster ways.
Clark told the Canadian's to stand down so he and this Corp. could take Rome. Or the Canadian would have been the first in to Rome .This let most of the Germans before Rome to escape and fight another day. The Canadian and US trooper of the FSSF were among first in Rome.
I was wondering why Casino was the main target. Looking topographic map of area explains it a bit better. Western coast has mountains which would likely offer defender at least similar advantage. Northeast has even bigger mountains. But there is a valley leading to Rome just west of Casino and monastery. The monastery area is perfectly positioned to fire artilery shells to whole valley.

My Maternal Grandfather fought that as part of Polish Army 2nd Corps, 3 DSK 3rd Division Carpathian Mountain Rifles as a mountain warfare Commando. He killed many Nazis, got the highest Polish military medal; VIRTUTI MILITARI.

You just mention it but its definitely not covered in the Video. By the way the Russians counter attack after Kursk in 1943 would be also interesting to see.

They did exceptionally well, this is a garbage take misinformation video with more to do with the politics of the time and propaganda against the Poles than their actual performance in battle. This video should be taken down.

I would like to add that the British wanted to attribute this victory to themselves by hanging their flag, but the Poles aimed their weapons at them and the slying ended.
