How a Shifter Works

- Here's how the automatic transmission shifter on your center console works to shift gears.
The gear shifter on your car is responsible for providing the driver an input method to changing the direction of the transmission in an automatic car. It is also a safety device preventing the shifter from being bumped into gear, ruining the transmission.
Two mechanisms are at play, to protect those around the vehicle and the transmission itself. The park - brake lockout secures the shifter in the P position until the key is in the ignition and the brake is depressed. The shift control computer, located underneath the shifter, will determine if these conditions are met and activate a solenoid to move a tab to allow the shifter to move.
The second mechanism at play is a detent rod that glides along a toothed profile. The rod must be pushed down (the button on the shifter depressed) in order for it to move into gear.
Manual transmissions do not have a park lockout or a toothed profile preventing certain gears from being selected, and hence must be used with caution.
This shifter was taken out of a 2001 Toyota Corolla with a 4 speed automatic transmission. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Look at all that glorious 90s plastic.
+wildcardNP Yep quite a cheaply built car
Incredible the amount of detail and work that goes into each little component we take for granted. Thanks for showing us!!
Weird that north americans are so addicted to their automatic transmissions, big roads, long distances. It would make more sense here in Europe where the roads are so smalls and there's basically one big traffic jam, yet everyone drives a stick..
+Koffi Banan Agreed! There's so much engineering that goes into a car that gets easily overlooked by the average driver.
Standard transmission= higher KPL (MPG here). It takes HP to run an AT.
@@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP That only applies to really old automatics, modern autos are more economical than their manual counterparts.
@@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP HP? Horsepower? For auto transmission?
@@behelpful1435
If you're regarding "new" cars, then no. I'm referring to what is mostly on the road, right now. "Older" systems _do_ require more HP to operate, compared to older manual gearboxes.
The majority of vehicles on the road, right now, 11/27/2021 are not younger than 2013.
Myth 1. Manual cars always get better fuel economy than cars with automatic gearboxes.
In the past, it was pretty much a given that vehicles with manual transmissions would be more fuel-efficient than their automatic counterparts. But as modern automatics gained additional gears and relied less on a torque converter, they have now overtaken manuals in terms of fuel economy.
Let's take the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro as an example. With the base four-cylinder engine, the six-speed manual gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in mixed driving conditions. The Camaro's automatic transmission, on the other hand, has eight speeds and is estimated to get 25 mpg in mixed driving - an 8.7% improvement.
To me, this channel is being much more about Reverse Engineering than Mechanics.. Which for some may sound not that pleasant but again, to me, it's amazing!! Keep up the great job!
+Marcos Scheeren Thanks for the comment. I started out doing repair, but this summer I bought this car to completely gut apart and learn how it works. Its an experience for me as I've learned so much, and with that understanding it will help diagnosing problems in the future. I'm glad you enjoy the videos, and video ideas are always welcome !
Your videos are really amazing. People actually get to see the stripped parts and understand how they work, thank you!
+LazyTamago that's the best way to learn. Thanks
You are a great mechanic and you explain it all so well .
Thanks. Im not a mechanic. Just an engineer
You are by far the smartest mechanic I've ever seen
I'm an engineer not a mechanic
1:48 “i have to de-pin this nicely” SNIP. 🤣🤣

Does all automatics have that mechanical cable running to transmission ?? Kudos for 6:28 .. ur the real car enthusiast..

Great knowledge of Demolition the Shift gear Box ,Meaning Taking it apart in detail rather than the instructions of how to fix the the problem , regarding the Bushing Ring , Or other spring Replacement!!Ahalo 😀

5:56 _I need to down shift to second gear in order to pass a slow corolla_
HEY! They ain't no slow! 😂 (I have one)
Yeah they are ! Always blocking the road...
The irony here is this shifter is from a Corolla
Thank you
Hello buddy. Am really hooked to your channel. Great work. Theres one thing i have always wondered given that todays vehicles moving from P to L isnt a straight line as this one. Its abit zigzag. How is a car thats for a different market one being a left drive and a right hand drive use the same transmission
Mthr Fr, you crack DEEP, brother you crack DEEEP. And I listened and watch very carefully, as a result I learned. I had a job to do cause my 97 Szki Sideck needed some attention and I gave it. Almost no plastic parts except the wheel that catches in park on the pin, so I qswabbed a little WD-[different mechanism(spring and ball on stick that catch on indents)same outcome] on each indent from P to L and bingo no more hassle from my chick.
Thanks BRO

Nice video and So quick
Thanks, short and to the point is my style.
speedkar99 you make video a oil change?
Thanks man you are. Awsome
Thank you for the video! It was very helpful. By any chance do you know if they sell the plastic position indicator strip on its own?
Baba G Solute to you.
YOU ARE GREAT.

speedkar99 you're pretty great. 🙄
Pleasure is all mine.
Hey I have a question about the shift lever. This car I have has been sitting in my driveway because the shift lever rod snapped off, how do I go about fixing it? Thanks for the informative video too!
If you can find a CAD modeller to make you a replica file you can then take it to a company that does CNC or 3d printing.

Yes it’s a shame Minivans don’t offer it nor does sedans don’t offer it with split bench seats anymore too. Plus that the only suv with it is basically a truck, the Tahoe and suburban.
My position indicator rubber slider is jamming up. It seems like it slipped off the track. I can shift backwards as far as D but the rubber gets all bunched up so I can't shift to 2 or L. I need to how to get it back on track.
1997 Camry XLE 6-cyl.
What would be the problem with my shifter, cause the engine sometimes won't start, it seems like the shifter don't identify the parking position, would you help me please ? Thanks in advance
Hi, Thanks for the video, one thing i dont know is ECU already know what position shifter is in with electronics but still i dont know why we need transmission cable to transmission ... any idea.. behind this. even recent model have this kind of setup
+sivaraj palanisamy modern transmission use a solenoid inside the transmission to change the park/ reverse drive gears. Older cars use a cable. See my transmission video for more.
Good video, should make more of other transmission selector
Yep I'll have one this year from the G35
I have a question my truck has the same kind of shifter as that, but when I shift it into neutral my truck is actually in reverse but it shows it’s in neutral and it’s like that with all gears it shows in in a different gear than I actually am. There was a little green chip that came out of the side of my shift assemblt inside the truck aswel and not sure how to go about fixing it
Don't even know what to say, well thank you once again.

Welcome
Would it be possible to have video for a Manual shifter? I've been trying to visualize how the lever engages with the shifter forks. And it gets even more complex with FWD which I believe uses shifter links because the transmission is bolted way over in the engine bay rather than in the cabin like a rwd would be.
I have a manual transmission video
Manual transmissions for life!!! Why? They're much cheaper to fix when they break down. Plus, that shifter was mostly plastic, don't shift angry folks, pretty sure it's a pricey fix.
+Brian Day if only I could learn stick shift now...
I love stick shift, but I use as well automatic most of the time, I have fixed those two, there is not a big difference from old style automatic and stick shift, but new automatic ones are kinda rude with my wallet. LOL
Oh, I'm sure you'd learn really fast. You have the brains, it's just getting a feel for it now. My 2002 Lexus Is300 manual trans(2jzge) went out at 250,000 miles. Parts, labor and tax. $950.00. Automatic trans for that car...$$$$$$
outstanding 👍
Thanks

May I know where's the reverse light switch on the automatic transmission of toyota 4afe?Thanks 😊
How is the reverse and forward gears buttons recognized by the transmission, since both are using the same two wires?
The cable goes to the transmission and controls a valve in the valve body. Check out my FWD transmission video
Can you tell me when Im going down the road the but is staying in and it will move forward on its own towards park,in other words it's not popping back out ,it's shouldn't move at all
Help me pls. I tried opening up the shift button and the spring pops up! I can put it back either the buttons is free (free shifting from D to R) or its locked (D and N only). Try several ways pushing the shifter up and down and screwing/unscrewing the lever up and down. But i decided now to put it in free so that i can still use the car but its dangerous coz i already mis shift from D to R twice now :(
Perfect! I have a question ? A lot of people can't answer directly because its hard to figure out. But why do you need to use the overide button? Why does it go into that ? I know it gets hard to pull out of park, but why does that happen? Another person I asked just kept saying it was a safety feature but "why does it do that" !?? It doesn't mean the parking pawl is damaged right?
No it's not damaged. It's a safety feature so someone doesn't knock it out of park accidentally.
Why is it that the lockout button giving me problems to move the shifter the button lockout works by only pressing the button several times until it gets in again. Then it shifts . What is the problem with it.
I'm in the delivery business. I've got a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze 9 speed automatic turbo diesel. I shift in and out of park probably 100 times a day. Will this cause the shifter to wear out faster than normal? I'm about to get a new job but worried I'm damaging it. Thanks!!!
Yes it might wear eventually
Try using the handbrake instead if you just want to pause in traffic
Are these new knob shifters in fords and ram trucks the same as this? How does the cable work?
+TheCastedone electric
If your shifter makes a clicking sound when you press the brake gently while it's in park. What does that mean? I had my front brake pads changed and oil changed and that's what was noticed after changing those, with the shifter in park and applying brakes. (Toyota Corolla)
The relay is releasing the shift lock
Some times my car will get locked in park and wont budge .. at times a little messing with it will release it, some times it wont budge for days. 98 ford mustang 6cyc Off and on for a few years now, and a super pain. At time 453 on your video you say that some times the solenoid might be busted. Does this seem to be the case with my car ? Could it be somthing else ?
+thisonelife x Yes, or it could be the sense circuit for the brakes, assuming your shifter is electronic like this one is.
Older vehicles use a cable or lever from the brake to unlock the shifter
It would be funny if he had to call out of his day job to rebuild his car lol
Haha
Well that did happen once...
When I screwed up a timing belt job.
Ouch! Interference engine?
Hello Speedkar love your ability to teach n show so grateful to you sir because you have accelerated my learning. I was a student mechanic in 70s certified for so many hours however the business was so corrupt, I switched to emergency trauma.
I don't know if you have the time to diagnose a corolla 2000 stuck in park. It cranks in neutral; will not start; is it the brake light switch?
I can hear the shift solenoid and the neutral safety switch is in position, all cables are ok.
If you cannot give me a clue and this video has given me many clues and wires to test; will let you know how I make out.
I will test brake pedal switch first then work my way to the shift solenoid with volt meter and ohms; love your work. If I cannot find the primary cause I will have read my textbooks, God bless you Speedkar!
Respectfully,
AG
Thanks. Have you checked air Fuel and spark since you've tried out the neutral safety switch?
@@speedkar99 yes starter relay; fuel relay, bat cables; starter solenoid and fuses work there is an ignition fuse inside dash board not blown its a 7.5 amp fuse it could be shifter module telling ecu car is in drive, so it will not start it could be a simple fix. It started last sept 2018 ,when I replaced fuel pump, I had floored the accelerator; it shut the car down.
Prior to this while driving the dashboard indicator flashed on the brake light. I thought this was a brake fluid issue it was very low refilled it pumping it with key on, no resistance on pedal ;then perhaps the master cylinder booster is old leaking vacum i don't really know yet never the less, the car should be able to start regardless of all the other issue. Its pointing to brake pedal and shifter module, which I could never find until Your video came to the rescue, god bless good fellow.
@@speedkar99 yes.
@@speedkar99 yes neutral safety switch in alignment, cables responsive. voltage n ground good no open circuits or broken wires.
Hi my car has problem in the morning the D is not working but when used D1 for sometime and after few mins shift to D than the gears are fine
Nice fix
Is it bad for an automatic transmission car to move the gear to neutral every red stoplight you encounter? And then to Drive to get moving?
**Here's how to drag race with an auto transmission**
Ok, you pull up beside the car you'll be racing, and you put the shifter into 'L' for "Leave. Once you reach 30mph, you shift it into 'D' for "Drag". When you hit 60-75mph, you quickly shift it into 'R' for "Race".
Once you have the car pulled out of the ditch, tow it to the shop to have the transmission replaced, then rinse & repeat! Lol. That was from an OLD joke I heard in the 80s.
Haha that's a good one... Except for P.... What's that for? 🤔
@@speedkar99 Pass
speedkar99, what an awesome video!
My shifter is having a problem that you mentioned on your video. Will not come out of park, the only way I can shift is by pumping the brake pedal, sometimes once sometimes several times. Should I have the solenoid replaced? 2004 Toyota Camry.
I actually have a work colleague that has a 2004 4Runner with the same issue.
+Sarahelena Rodriguez thanks. Check your oar neutral switch. Common problem with Camry.
Thank you. Will do.
Holy cow! I have a gear shift that doesn't require me to push the button to change gears even when the car is not running and the break not pushed. guess I'll just find a junkyard and replace the whole contraption lol
All of what your explaining had a creative that provided intelligent design but most conclude that the vast universe with all nuances it’s nuances I am intricacies just popped up, not logical. Thank I’m a little slow. You’re a little too fast for me but it all makes sense.
correction: Had a creator
Is it possible to convert this system into something electronic, where I'm able to choose on my dash?
Yes
But the transmission needs the cable movement to work so you'd need a servo to pull the cable
great
I have a corolla, sometimes when i put the shifter in park - it doesn't click in properly into the park position. So the next time i try to start, the car won't start. Any ideas how to fix this problem?
+Kee Arun There might be something broken in the shifter or it can be the park neutral switch.
When i do have this problem , i normally shift the car into neutral to start. All the other position on the shifter work fine, only when I slide the shifter into park it does not click in properly. Would a bad transmission mount cause this problem?
It takes a lot to really wear that spring plate or the detent surfaces, right? Because somebody keeps telling I have to shift slowly or else I would break the gears somehow.
But it looks like the surface of the detents are rounded and designed to slip but only if you deliberately move it or bump at a certain force. I don't see how that component would wear.
Heck, it seems that auto shifters from junkyards still work fine and go into position just fine.
Yes it is a high wear surface sonim sure they've made sure it doesn't wear down over the years
@@speedkar99 Makes sense, since all of the auto trans issues I heard, there is nothing about it being out of alignment in the mechanism inside, only when the cable or linkage needs to be tightened or realign, but nothing in the shifter assembly. It doesn't seem like you need to replace that part ever, even if the driver is a rough one.
Oh, thanks for answering my question! Had an argument with a family member over this so I started searching for answers and at the same time increased my mechanical understanding.
@@speedkar99 To clarify: I was told that I could get the selector out of alignment or something if I don't go through the notches one by one. What I usually is just do what you did a few times and smoothly to drive or park from either position.
Great

Another well done video. Seeing you cut an electrical connector, would you do a video on how to disconnect the various type of electrical connectors? I swear that not a single connector is the same in some cars and most are impossible to disconnect.
+Tripp M thanks for the suggestion, a video on electrical connectors has been requested before. I'll consider it now that I'll be scraping this car and I have the harness at my disposal. And yes most connectors are different so they don't get mixed up.
Maybe talk about soldered vs twisted vs crimped connectors and advantages and disadvantages of each?

i'm running a 93 corola with automatic tranny similar on this video. I find the gear stick somehow resistive when shifting(due to age i guess), is there a way to loosen up the sliding of the stick without opening the assembly? I'm thinking of using any alcohol spray type of lubricant but not sure tho . I haven't drove yet a newer version to compare the shift stick smoothness. i hope anyone have any idea, thanks.
Alcohol will remove grease
