What’s Going On With Facial Recognition? | Untangled

  • The accuracy rate of facial recognition depends on the data its fed. With enough good data, the accuracy rate could be almost perfect.
    Facial recognition is already being implemented in US airports for security and efficiency. But there are concerns that the US government is creating a digital ID library of millions of Americans without consent.
    The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement are also using facial recognition for security reasons. But without clear protections, it could be used as a tool to violate human rights. China is also implementing facial recognition on a bigger scale by giving citizens "social scores" in hopes of helping society become better.
    Facial recognition can be used to make tasks automated, convenient, and efficient. But there needs to be regulation and protections in place.

    Soon they're going to be adopting this technology into all public security systems with anyone's permission to track your every move. Truly dystopian times we''re heading towards..

    • @drfrz8846
      @drfrz8846 Před 5 lety +7

      @jerry metcalf Does it not make you uncomfortable the government could track your every movement in public, observing where you go and drive, always knowing exactly where you are and having a record of your face? Or is it all good because it's used to "catch the criminals!"

    • @smode983
      @smode983 Před 5 lety +9

      @jerry metcalf What is considered criminal, wrong or dangerous by your government today may drastically change tomorrow. You may not agree with what they then deem wrong. Who says when they decide you are a danger for holding a certain political or religious belief? Governments turn bad and they usually take away rights one by one before they do.
      Also, even if you do trust your government as a whole do you not find it foolish to blindly trust all individual government employees as well as their contractors to know everything about you? Multiple NSA employees have admitted to abusing their access to the collection of our private communications by listening in on soldiers deployed having phone sex with their wives, spying on ex partners etc. NYPD officers have used collection databases to stage robberies, spy on co-workers...one NYPD officer even used an FBI database to choose who his female victims would be so he could cannabalize them.
      Since the same private companies who are getting rich off of selling your data are also many of the ones creating this technology odds are pretty good that they are also going to happily sell your biometric data. How long do you think it will be before someone who is crazy sees you on the street and becomes infatuated. This is where privacy should protect you. Instead they snap your picture and run it through a facial recognition app or software. They now know who you are, can find your social media, your address, where you work and so on to stalk you and to harm you. I can tell you how long, it is already possible with FindFace. Should that mentally unstable person be an employee with the government or a police officer their access to your life and routine would be even greater. This type of technology is not only dangerous to bad people doing bad things. It is dangerous to everyone. As soon as we invented windows we invented curtains because we are each entitled to privacy.
      "Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." - Edward Snowden

    Thing is, facial recognition also allows for facial reconstruction, provided we give it the means to. They can say they are not storing images of us, which is entirely true to an extent, but what they are storing is our features within the program. Images take up a lot of space. It is much easier to store a set of numbers relating to who you are, then have the computer read that. Instead of knowing that I'm "Beemer from this photo," facial recognition knows that I am "Beemer from these measurements." That's where is pretty blatantly calculating who you are without storing your image. When I say "facial reconstruction," I mean the same thing as measurements because it isn't referring to a picture, it's just referring to a bunch of accurate measurements of your face.

  • @octoberskye1049

    Facial recognition is so creepy because it is an invasion of privacy. As are devices requiring thumb and retinal scans to identify you as their owner. As is allowing Google Maps to track your movements, identifying your Home and place of Work. We pay for technology that quite cheerfully spies on us.
    And we are told this is all "for our own good."
    Fortunately, there are work 'rounds. Ways of defeating invasive software and devices. Some quite simple. Don't buy the invasive devices. If you own one, search online for instructions that tell you how to turn these "features" off (if not included in your user manual).
    Phone, tablet and laptop cameras are easily defeated with strategic placement of a Post-it note.
    As for Facebook, there are numerous reasons not to use it. Security breaches being one of them. Zuckerberg being a total jerk who is pro-government regulation of the Internet being another.
    Can you take a train or drive, rather than flying? "Opting out" sounds great, however, you are IN the airport and have been photographed and analyzed X number of times prior to making this request. Inefficient method.
    As for issues with racial bias, what else is new? Of course it's wrong! Do you imagine all those with PhD's are ethical geniuses? 🐯

    Camera based technologies can be defeated via LED lights. Red light cameras, for example, can be defeated by using a licence plate frame with an LED light that makes it easier for a real police officer to see, but impossible for a camera to see, your plate information. Because the plate is not obstructed from via these are not illegal. Likewise, If you want to disable facial recognition you can get special glasses that emit a light which would prevent the camera from getting a clear image of you. Would it be constitutional to make it illegal to wear an item which prevents a camera from tracking you, but does not prevent a real person from identifying you?

    To be honest if computer scientists want to "perfect" facial recognition, the thing they should do to a system is include and use a CNN (convolutional neural network) on identical twins to strengthen the architecture on a face id system. This future system would then probably pass in the turing test for facial detection, when compared to a human detection. Since mainly only humans can only tell the difference between some two identical twins. This would truly perfect a facial recognition network not by adding ethnicities but by adding identical twins into the equation of face ids.

    If facial recognition is "higher than humans can do; almost perfect" why is there a false positive rate of 92% among the systems used by police? If computers were better than people, then people would be incapable of seeing a problem, but when 2,297 our ot 2,470 alerts from facial recognition systems are a false positive it indicates that these systems have a very very long way to go. This is a very big issue right now because of it's use in CCTV and is relied on by police. Even if they haven't arrested anyone yet, mistaken identification in other areas of law have resulted in death so I am very wary when anyone says a technology this bad is "almost perfect" as it will create an unrealistic sense of reliability.

      @@vanilladanila986 because my pics are uploaded by me and saved by Google anyway... but hopefully they dont get to just sit and capture my features the entire time I'm on my phone. I've never done a facial recognition deal for my phone, but I have done the finger prints

    There are a lot of gray areas for mass facial recognition systems as it's excellent in cases like missing people but can also be harmful if they misidentify ppl. But I definitely think China's use to apparently make society better is probably the one that raises a huge red flag.....

    The chinese government 'social points' remind of the psycho-pass (a special number system that tries to prevent crime by seeing the behaviour of the person (I think so) and the higher the number the bigger the probability of that person being a criminal or being violent, also the psycho-pass system is also flawed) from the anime psycho-pass
