I worked those yard gates as ‘Circle Casual’ in D for a couple of years. That included the condemned yard which was pulled down in 1987 I think. A lot of memories. These yards protected inmates from others in different yards. The fear and aggression was always between the minority of inmates which could flare up at any moment. Most inmates and staff were quite respectful of each other’s presence. On both sides those that acted contrary to requirements were removed.
You would have some stories to tell, I have no doubt. But you were a witness and part of a bygone era, and we all choose our paths. That was yours, I hope it left you with more good memories than bad.
