The Super Stock Dodge was also mentioned in the Little Old Lady from Pasadena. I grew up in the 1960s one of my high school buddy's dad had a 62 Plymouth with a Super Stock 413 in it. There were very few cars that could beat it. Even in 1969 when we graduated. A big block Stingray could beat it but not by much.

It was a high horsepower car even now it’s fast I was just thinking in terms of 409 versus 413 the 413 put you in your seat a whole lot more than the 409 in my opinion

My father left me a car collection in 99. I have both cars and raced them 100 times under every condition possible. Like slicks, bumped timing, you name it. That 413 wins every single time!! Every time!

The song details a drag race between a Super-Stock 413 cu. in.-powered 1962 Dodge Dart (not a Plymouth) and a fuel-injected 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray and is derived from a longer poem by Christian. Many classic car enthusiasts and experienced muscle car drag racers have suggested over the years that in actuality, all things being equal (i.e. drivers of equal skill), an early 1960s SS Dodge Dart (most likely the 1962 Max Wedge variant) with its 413 cu. in. engine with twin 4-barrel carburetors ("dual quads") and ram-air induction, producing 410-420 horsepower, 460-470 torque, would have most likely easily beaten a 1963 Chevy Corvette Sting Ray with its fuel injected 327 cu. in. engine producing roughly 350-360 horsepower, 352 torque. Back in 1962 I actually saw a 413 Dodge Dart S/SA mop up everything including 409 /425 HP in S/S Class. Running mid to low 12's ( Top illustrator ran Stick Shift against Automatics.)

It’s crazy to think that savoy grocery getter will annihilate one of the most highly praised corvettes, where was the coverage back then. Studebaker R3 vs savoy would be a cool match up lots of underrated cars. I still stand by my statement nothing could be better than the corvette and if there was something better just didn’t get the coverage. Much like tesla now they just don’t include that car faster than everything, but remember when Nissan GTR was the fastest brought it ever time double standard

We had the this Plymouth with in the 4 dr. Wagon. I was 4 years old when dad pulled up in this with his buddy. I still remember mom behind the wheel and dad and his rocking the front and back of the car giving mom a bouncing ride and her laughing. I loved that wagon and it was well hated. I also love the ‘62 Dodge. Virgil Exner was Fired for the weird designs he came up with down sizing and trying to make them European looking. The same man was praised for the Forward Look of the 1950’s Chryslers.
I had a really cool analogy in a second page that I didn’t end up using but I should’ve used it the late 50s was like being at the party in the early 60s it was like the hangover afterwards like what the heck happened.. I know Virgil Exner was the leader of the forward walk he’s in charge of all the fins he didn’t want the fins to go away.. he got fired over this because Newburgh president of Chrysler went to a garden party where Ed Cole was present Cole talked about the new Chevy And how much smaller it was Newburgh panicked because Plymouth was a direct competitor to Chevy so they thought that they were downsizing all of the cars in Plymouth had big cars sales probably would’ve suffered.. unbeknownst she knew Burgh Chevy was still making full-size cars they were just releasing a new line of cars that were smaller than the full-size cars..
The Savoy Max Wedge 413 would beat pretty much any of the small block Vettes , including 375 hp fuelies. Futhermore , it could also win against Big Blocks too including L78 396 , and would be a close race with L71 427 and LS5 454 Vettes. However it didn't stand much of a chance against the mighty L88 427 , those were underrated by at least 100 hp and had a top speed that was crazy for the time of 170 mph 🏁

Yes, I've owned 11 Vetts over the past 40 years and loved them all, including a '68 427 4spd Roadster.....and I also owned a factory stock '62 Impala SS "409" dual-4bl and 4spd car and even a '62 Dodge Polara 500 with "413" and 4spd. The Mopar was the "BEAST" car of them all.....bar none.
That Savoy has what we call a 4 body trunk.
Haha yeah that car was a beast to drive I got to work there last summer I got to drive a lot of their stuff that car was incredible when it ran it ran great but it could change with an instant Mopar’s are very finicky especially from that era

The flares on top of the fenders of the Savoy remind me a lot of the flares on the re-designed Ram for 1994. The flares also extended into the doors on the Rams of those years.

The thing is that in the song, they never mention that the stingray wins, only that the 413's lead is starting to shrink.
They said "Super Stock Dart" which would roughly be the same car as the Savoy. In 1962 the Dart series were "full size" cars in Dart 330 and 440 trim lines. They were the favorites of drag racers because they were much lighter than the big Custom 880 or even the Dart-based Polara 500.
But super stock was Plymouth dodge was ramcharger

@@What.its.like. In a song you can make up any results you want. Super stock Dodge's were hot, Corvettes had big number added to their engine hp to sell cars. None ever pulled the numbers GM said they had.

I think the 413 would eat the Corvette though that car when it hooks up it hooks up.. and it’s light .. I worked at that Classic Car dealership over that summer and I really really wanted them to just drive both of those cars first one to 60-70 miles an hour winds or whatever.. we never did it because the Corvette is six-figure car. I got the opportunity to push both of those cars. It’s harder to push a Corvette. I had to push the Savoy about a quarter mile back to the showroom. I shut it off. Those things are very temperamental with the cross ram they don’t like to start all the time and they can turn with the wind from tuning great to not running at all
The song is The Little Old Lady from Pasadina, but I'm not sure if that's the Beach Boys or Jan and Dean, both groups sang that song. Great review on these two cars.
I use the Jan & Dean version but I think I like the beach boys version better it’s faster Brian Wilson wrote that song if I’m not mistaken and his dad was really upset because he kept writing hits for other bands Brian Wilson wrote This song all he really wanted to was produce music he didn’t want to be in a band. He wanted to compose and write songs it’s sad story really guy was a genius

I drove the savoy it hooks up good my boss took me for a ride and pushed it I didn’t drive it to the limit like he did if someone was to put a $100 on the dash while in it.. it would t be possible to get it. The torque holds you to the seat. I’m going to ask again I’d love to see these two cars go at it 0-60 race
The song "Shut Down" specifically mentions a "Superstock (Dodge) Dart", not a Plymouth Savoy.
Very true but super stock was always Plymouth ram charger is Dodge and they say superstock referring to a Plymouth but it really could be either car because they’re very similar
@What.its.like. Super Stock was the NHRA class they ran in, and likely what was referred to in the song. So a Dart would fit. Both the Dart and Savoy are B bodies in '62 though, so minimally different.

In my opinion it could be either car because superstock always talked about Plymouth dodge ram charger.. and realistically the two cars are really really similar the only thing different is the name and the spelling.. If somebody went and changed all the badges on the Plymouth dodge one would be none the wiser

Two words for 1965
Ok I've had both cars on scales and the Corvette is 3125 lbs in real life. The normal Savoy was 3650 in a form that the public could buy. The Aluminum findeted, bumpers and acid dipped cars are indeed that light but so fragile and none were actual steet car but sold as race cars to stock racers

Very good comparison but you have the weights wrong. The Savoy with a 413 weighs in at 3,530 lbs while the 65 Corvette with a 327 weight in at 3,117 lbs. I have the Corvette and can confirm that in real life.

you have to understand that the Blocks in both cars were supped up to the max for the Drag Strip so a stock one does not do either one justice
These 2 were street legal cars you could buy directly from a dealership.....that's why they called the "Super-STOCK" cars.
The cars in this song were not ones suped up professionally for the drag strip.

Weren't they made of fiberglass? I openly question that weight rating. there were only two seats and no trunk to speak of. The car is supposed to be LIGHT.

Thank you it means a lot going to do some more in the future I’m going to compare a factory five cobra to a viper I hope next week if the Challenger is still there we have a 70 Plymouth Cuda I might compare those two there’s a couple other cars that are there that can be compared with each other I like doing it outside the box comparisons I thought of another comparison that would be totally outside of the box and I might start doing comparisons like that call them non-comparable comparison I’m going outside the box kind of thinker I got a lot of flack for it though.. but I’m glad that you enjoy it I love comparing cars that don’t usually get compared.. =)
I asked my boss if we could take both of those cars down the highway and shoot them because that would’ve been an amazing sight to see Plymouth Savoy max wedge super rare car Chevy Corvette fuel injection super rare car I don’t think I’ll ever see them in the same place again but we sold the Savoy so that’s never going to happen or at least not now with those two cars.. A comparison that I really wanna do totally outside of the box would be 1957 Rambler rebel versus 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk both cars severely underrated both cars are fast they hold both the top two spots of fastest cars of the 50s the AMC rambler rebel was the fastest car produced in the 50s it blew the Corvette out of the water and it never got press time because it was so good and it shouldn’t have been but it was.. according to research that I’ve done that car is a four-door family car can go 0 to 60 I’ve seen as fast as seven seconds that’s faster than anything produced in the 50s in America.. couple caveats to that I heard that you had to have a 327 with fuel injection that’s right AMC offered feel injection just like Chevy but nobody ever heard of it because AMC was a very conservative company. And just got dusted under the rug so to speak.
@@What.its.like. It's a shame AMC faded away forever. And I never knew about the Rambler Rebel, especially beating a Corvette. But I have read that the earliest Corvettes were not very sporty in the area of handling, but they are very nice looking for sure! Also, I've always liked the Studebaker Golden Hawk, with its sleek looks and sweet roofline. I'll keep watching and try to keep my chats shorter. I just love cars!

This channel is different for many reason but the biggest is I live in the comment section and I answer as many as I can and it will always be that way because I try to treat people how I’d like to be treated.. As mentioned below, the 413 in the song "Shut Down" is a Dodge Dart. When I hear the Jan and Dean song "Little old lady from Pasadena", I always pictured the "shiny red Super Stock Dodge" referenced as a '63 or '64 Dodge 330 (basically an up-trimmed Dart) with the 426 Max Wedge option. Am I wrong?

True, but I’ve also heard the 426 MW referred to as the Chrysler Super Stock engine (mainly by a friend in Vermont who owned one and desperately sought a cheap ‘68 Charger R/T to drop it into, but by then they’d already started to appreciate beyond his means) so I just assumed it was a reference to the 426.

It occurred to me after I posted the above that the reason my buddy called it the "Super Stock engine" might have been to avoid someone breaking into his place to steal it. I'll ask him about it this summer.

Ever heard the Pat Traverse (the best IMHO) version of "Hot Rod Lincoln"? I have fond memories of that song playing on the radio while traveling much too fast as a passenger in a baby blue '61 Newport with a 413 salvaged from a '63 Imperial. My dad's boss had a brand new Mercury with a 429 and it drove him nuts that my dad could leave him behind without even trying in the Newport.
I don't know. Conventional wisdom would tell me that a cool looking, aerodynamic, sexy Corvette should be able to blow the doors off a "granny" car like a Dodge Dart. That is---unless the Dart is the ultimate "sleeper car"
I got to drive a 413 car last year when it hooks up it doesn’t mess around we had a fuel injection stingray at the dealership but I didn’t get to drive it nor did I want to drive it because the car is a high dollar car but I would love to one day see which one is the pastor of the two it might come down to driver

I got to drive that 413 that summer I believe it would have destroyed the vette.. but as you know nothing could be better than the corvette
I am addicted to big inch big blocks, have had some interesting examples, a COPO 1969 SS 396 375HP El Camino four speed, a 413 Sonic Ram Plymouth, and I was getting the small parts together to put a late 50s Desoto hemi into my 65 Plymouth Valiant when my wife totaled it (my mom bought it new, it spent it's life in the garage and had almost 900 thousand miles, and was all original), and a 1941 Willys coupe with a 421 (I think) Buick Wildcat engine with Hillborn fuel injection, M22 four speed, 57 Ford rear end, the engine was set back about 9 or 10 inches, and would do bumper dragging wheel stands, I miss those cars and those days

I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to do that episode I definitely know that I won’t get that chance again so I did not wanna miss that opportunity I did say in the video that they did saying about a Dodge and explain this whole situation, or at the very least think I did that one was awhile ago
The Mopar will walk that Vette all day. The Vette isn't a drag car.. it's a touring car. That Plymouth, or big brother Dodge as it's supposed to be, is designed for straight line acceleration. There's no comparison and it shouldn't have ever been a question. Especially after 60 years. Even with second day mods, the Plymouth would be at more of an advantage.
I wanted so bad to take both of those cars out and run them. I got to drive the Savoy last year. I worked at the Classic Car dealership. My boss told me he’s like get on it don’t be scared. I said it’s not my car and he took me for a ride in it And I couldn’t believe what he could make it do.. that car was unbelievable. The only thing I will say is it could change with the wind that car could run good and in a moments notice it can run like complete garbage because of something really stupid like the gas cap isn’t venting properly.
The crazy thing is it’s fast it’s affordable it isn’t pretty. It’s got an acquired taste but the more you’re around it the more I guess you grow love it. I suppose Corvettes are overrated anyway in my opinion.

The cobra race team Called Corvette Plastic Pacoderm Because it was way to heavy the super stock Dodges were lite weight and did raise hell on the big block Ford and Chevys!

But super stock was a term used by Plymouth and ramcharger was used by dodge and I think they changed (the beach boys who, Brian Wilson couldn’t surf but worth some of the best surf/beach song also didn’t know anything about cars other then they were cool ) taking that into consideration flipped the script and took a part from each name because dodge ramcharger doesn’t slip of the tongue neither does super stock Plymouth. Or Plymouth ramcharger but super stock dodge works great

In a way they sang about both cars at the same time because Plymouth doesn’t sound as good as saying super stock dodge, I watched an episode I don’t remember where. Beach boys were talking about that song and they had to make a few changes to make it flow good, there were other songs where they did similar things

I wanted I worked at the Classic Car dealership last year we had both of those cars and I asked my boss is there anyway that we could take those out back and see which ones faster I got to drive the 413 I did not want to drive the Corvette the Corvette was a whole lot more money it was almost double might’ve been even triple the price
A lot of times people ask me why I don’t drive a lot of the cars insurance is a big reason but that’s not the main reason the main reason is new cars are replaceable these aren’t if it has historical value and you wreck it you just ruined a part of history and I don’t wanna be that guy so I’m pretty content with just going for a ride and some of those really expensive cars

There was a lot of information in that song that wasn’t right like super stock referred to Plymouth but they saying super stock dodge a dodge always went by ram charger
@@What.its.like. Super stock refurled to the NHRA class the cars were built for, both Dodge and Plymouth were Super stock Cars! You could get a Dart or Savoy with a Slant 6, in lt You could only get the Max Wedge in the Super stock cars.

@@65sohc The steel unibody was the Plymouth - I know, because I owned one that got T-boned. That car , with a 361 V8, single 4Bbl, and 94,000 miles on it stayed right alongside my buddies 1961 Jaguar XKE to 140 mph on a fresh stretch of deserted freeway in 1968.

This was a comparison based on the Beach boys song shut down you are totally correct in saying that not these two cars are nothing like each other but that Plymouth Savoy will eat the Corvette for breakfast lunch and dinner in the song the Corvette win but it’s not like that in reality to be completely fair there isn’t that many cars in the 60s that could go toe to toe with the Corvette this car can annihilate it.. it’s another outside the box comparison we do it outside the box comparisons on this channel

The dodge is much heavier and the corvette under 3000 lbs. That’s why this was a race in the first place.
I’m not sure about all that I had to push both.. the savoy definitely easier to push.. lol

Had Chrysler not "down sized" in 62, installed curve side glass, cars would of been great looking.
In weight; what the corvette losses in fiberglass it dubbed in frame. Which is why they were Cobra food most of the time till 1968 😢

As much as I like Corvettes the Plymouth is the ugly duckling that I would love to have (especially with the 413/4x4s).

I do not believe the song limited the race to just the quarter mile. As a result, in a top end in race the Corvette would blow away the Mopar. Additionally, if the race was conducted around a curved roadway the Mopar would have no chance.
It happened on the strip where the road was wide so that would refer to it was a drag race never specified how far 0 to 60 in the Savoy will annihilate the Corvette at a fraction of the cost in the long run the Corvette would probably win I wonder how long it would take for it to catch up though
But then the vet would have no chance against a Ford Cobra, 427 or 298....
