I’m here for the same reason. Although it isn’t the SAME bolt carrier group ours doesn’t have a through hole in the bolt and these do. But same manufacturer. It will be interesting to see.
It’s also good to mention since it has a through hole it may also not have the gas key lug and one of the only 2 failures here was in the gas key alignment so the lugged version may fix that issue (if it is one).
@@billstevens5277 the bolt is a part of the bolt carrier group. The lug I’m talking about is under the gas key which is on the bolt carrier and key which we can’t see in the video.

Gunsmithing, the profession where you need a great poker face when explaing to customers how ignorant they are on tolerance. I have found 3 non plum/straight barrel extentions in the past 2 months alone....

Most people don't understand "tolerance stacking" and buy a bunch of parts and say, "they'll all within spec" and wonder why they have what Elmer Fudd might call a "wanker wifle".

These are not carriers you buy to be milspec, you buy them for the considerable bump in accuracy they provide. I've had a NM side charging bolt and it's been flawless for 5 years now, gun shoots cloverleaf groups at 200 yards without issue.

I have a Young NM carrier in a 10.3” full auto. Thousands of rounds and had it hot enough to glow the Gas tube and suppressor numerous times. Never had any gas key loosening issues.
I’m using an RLL full auto host and young makes about the only RLL-specific bolt carrier out there, so it’s certainly about the highest/best quality RLL compatible carrier... unless you want to run an un shrouded SP1 carrier from the 70’s/80’s. So of course I run the Young RLL carrier and it’s been fantastic.
I was waiting for this one. I was hoping for the HMB bolt. I wonder if you could modify an existing tool to squarely cut off the bolt tail a thousandth at a time? A hand crank case length trimmer comes to mind.

Hey Chad, I love the videos. What I really want to see added to these videos is the remedies you employ to fix some of the issues you encounter. For example on this video when there isn't enough firing pin protrusion, do you file down the end of the bolt or have an alternative remedy?
I'm curious about this also. I have a YHM BCG and the bolt is longer than normal when measured with calipers. As a result, the firing pin doesn't protrude nearly as much, and I suspect it would fail your test. What would a proposed solution be? 5.45 Firing pin?
WWSD2020 brought me here too. I wish the gas keys could have been removed to see if these also have the recoil lugs and recess. If they do, I'd take that over staking 8 days a week. Seeing the NM fail on firing pin protrusion make me wonder if that is intentional... reducing firing pin impact velocity is a thing for bolt action match rifles.

How do you headspace without removing (or overcoming the spring tension on) the ejector? Shouldn't the ejector be compressing and fighting you as you push the bolt into your test barrel?
I never knew the term “ carrier belly” know that I know the term I have question I’ve been wanting to ask someone knowledgeable..on most of my bcgs including colts I noticed that the bevel on the front of the carrier belly is never centered.the young’s in this video are beveled evenly...why do companies not center the bevel? Hopefully you know what I’m trying to ask lol
I bought my young hmb bolt and it fails to hold itself up on the gas ring check, seems to work just fine, just seems odd being brand new and almost 400 bucks
They say they don’t stake because their gas keys actually have small recoil lugs underneath that mean a lot of the force otherwise delivered straight to those fasteners goes into the lugs. That makes staking sort of redundant.
Armorer here. I’ve directly seen two examples of their fastners failing and have seen internet documentation (for what it is worth) of several similar situations. My coworker, who is much more metallurgically minded than myself, inspected one set and seemed to think they were overly hardened. The consensus seems to be they do not have a consistent heat treat.
Based on this physical, I would not want to get a BCG from this company. Have you had the opportunity to check out Cryptic Coatings' BCG's? I know they use Toolcraft, but they still have their own QC process and do their own coatings.
‘HM Defense’ has the Cam Pin “Pocket” on their bolts to “aid in lubricating” the internals of the BOLT carrier group as mentioned. They call it the ‘HMB bolt’...my understanding is THEY R & D’d it. I didn’t know 2 companies offered the innovation...
I have no horse in this race..however I was wondering if either you Chad, or anyone in the comments have had one of these Young mfg carrier keys come loose or heard of it happening?
They’re not staked because they don’t really need to be. Young puts recoil lugs on their gas keys, which distributes a lot of the force put on the fasteners. It’s also not really out of spec compared to anything else. I don’t think anything has ever been totally in-spec according to this channel. What issues do exist with these are fairly minor.
InRange/Brownells uses this bolt carrier group on the WWSD2020 rifle. A commenter mentioned your channel. I'm glad I found you, subbed.

You can order them with the HMB closed off bolt or a regular style bolt, whichever you prefer.

I'd bet that right. Some bolt carrier are modified so you can use softer primers too like the 205m feds without slam fires.

Those headspace gauges are cut to clear the extractor, you can see they have a narrow tail.

Keep in mind that your method is not the mil method of checking gas ring serviceability

Supposedly they are phasing out the chromed extractor and cam pin as well.

They should be angled to assist pushing the bolt catch down if it jumps up.
How's the AO precision BCG holding up do there bolts hold up better than Toolcraft
