- 1 week update of practicing violin as an adult learner! Critiques are welcome !
Here’s a few things to consider when watching my progress:
- I’m a guitarist of over 10 years
- I practiced 1 - 3 hours everyday
- unstructured practice on my own (no teacher just a friend who gave me some pointers)

First of all congratz for the decision to learn the violin! I just wanted to share my opinion about learning the violin without a teacher. You will not be able to play this instrument without a teacher next to you for the early years. It will take very long time only for the basics. This instrument is so complicated. you need to be able to control and relax a lot of muscles. Take 1 lesson per month! Try online lessons you can find really cheap for your level!
Thanks! I know what you mean. I don’t think that everyone is able to learn without a teacher, some people are unable to hear pitch or know when something sounds bad. I think I have the opposite problem to that because I’m terribly self critical. I’m happy with my progress so far, but I’ll certainly consider taking lessons!
