Unfortunately I do not read or speak Japanese. So going to their homepage really hasn’t helped me. But thank you for the info. They are fun to watch and listen to.

Report on the white gibbon "Shi-chan"
We would like to report to you about the white gibbon "Shi-chan" born on May 31, 2020 at the Izu Shaboten Zoo.
Around 15:30 on January 22, 2021, "Shi-chan", who was rehabilitating for herd on "Island of White Gibbons", was found with an injury on his left arm. Immediately, the veterinarian underwent emergency surgery, but was severely ill and was forced to remove his left arm. Currently, "Shi-chan" is undergoing medical treatment in an isolated room to avoid external infections. With the treatment of a veterinarian and the support of a zookeeper, "Shi-chan" can now eat rice and move around with the rope made in the isolation space, using his right arm and both feet dexterously.
We had opened the window in her room a little. I think it's very likely that her father pulled her out when she had her arms out. At that time, she also started living with her and her mother at night.
We deeply regret the failure to prevent her injury.
In the future, we will think about the future of "Shi-chan", breed it more carefully, and do our best to support her recovery.
Tomoaki Nakamura, Director of Izu Shaboten Zoo
[Future of "Shi-chan"] We will repair the inside of the animal house to avoid the risk of illness and injury. She plans to return to the group as soon as the renovation inside the animal house is completed, assuming all kinds of situations such as reducing movement problems, installing ropes tightly, and avoiding the danger of falling.

Unfortunately, none of us can plan for every contingency. But here's one thing positive: Thanks to the sacrifice that poor Shi-chan gave, that is one contingency THAT zoo will always plan for, and it will never happen to another gibbon there again. That still sucks though... I know those keepers have worked hard to keep that gibbon alive and were excited to reunite it with it's parents. That's one thing you can always be sure of with zoo keepers, because they certainly aren't there for the salary.
