Rockpile perform 'Teacher Teacher' live on the TV show "Fridays" - December 19, 1980. Nick Lowe: bass, vocals Dave Edmunds: guitar Billy Bremner: guitar, backing vocals Terry Williams: drums .
He's singing and chewing gum AND playing bass. First time I saw him he was also smoking a cigarette AND drinking from a beer bottle, while playing bass and singing. Not fair, is it - too much talent!
These guys were the real deal, I keep a poster of them from the Rockpile record in my studio to remind me where my energy level should be, when I get lazy. Thanks guys.
I will say it now: I've been in and around the music business for 30+ years, been to thousands of shows from house parties to stadiums, and I NEVER saw a rock'nroll band that was better than Rockpile.
this was such a great time for music i got to see this type music is small clubs in Boston in the 80's the places were always rocking The Channel, Paradise Club, The Rat, Kenmore Square was a paradise
Yes, I was there, too, great times! I remember The Rat, we lived in "Charlesview," the rundown apartment building just to the right of the club, and visited Charlie's many a late night, a great cheap cafeteria/diner. Back then Kenmore Square was filled with homeless, elderly, and poor students. Remember Mr. Butch?
I watched the hilarious "Bad Teacher" last night on Net, this song on the opening credits, and I couldn't believe how I'd so forgotten such a song from my 80s. So exquisite! My taste today is largely retro 60s soul, garage and bubblegum. "Teacher" is perfectly at home.
Although "Fridays" was eventually canceled, they had an unbeievable run of musical guests including Rockpile, King Crimson, George Thorogood and others. I was running out to buy a new album after every show!
@pattywig007 Thanks for the memory, Patty. JuJu Man was a popular set closer for both Rockpile and D.E. in the post-Rockpile days. About halfway through you'd notice the volume on the P.A. steadily going up&up until the closing guitar battle jam would cause the speakers to clip and shred, making funny noises in your head, raising your already elevated blood pressure, and leaving you with severe tinnitus for a couple of days. God, I so do love that!
@RManFlint Couldn't agree more! Billy was very underrated, what a nice clean ringing sound he has in this song. Also, Terry Williams...WOW! He's all over the drum kit on this one. I wish they showed more of him in this song.
Great Video, thanks much. One of my favorites off the Rockpile album. As cabronte said, Fridays sure had great guests. Got videos of Jim Carroll and the Stray Cats from the show. Saw Dave Edmunds live but always wanted to see Nick Lowe, or this supergroup, Rockpile.
saw these guys open for elvis costello in the late seventies at the santa monica civic...poor elvis costello, they rocked the house and elvis could not compete.
I love your user name. I snagged a lot of these old clips on my beta machines as well, and still use beta to this day. I have all three songs from this show as well as a lot of other Fridays clips.
@poopologist96 It could be because they're playing this song higher than on the recorded version? On the LP the tune is an entire step lower- a big jump! Dave Edmunds does have a great voice, but so does Billy Bremner. Billy's single Shattered that he released after Rockpile really showcased his voice nicely.
@philcollis100 If that weren't enough, Lowe's also a noted producer; he produced Elvis Costello's "Armed Forces" album with the classic "What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding", which Lowe also wrote. He discovered the Pretenders and produced their demos, and if I recall correctly, produced 1 or 2 songs on their eponymous debut (Chris Thomas produced the bulk of it). Lowe produced an early version of "The Wait", which appeared as a single b-side and is better than the album take.
I played this song over in the beginning of Bad Teacher so many times. So I was curious as to who made it.. that brought me here. I can dance to anything with a decent beat.
I'm speaking from ignorance--I am curious why Dave Edmunds didn't sing harmony or backup on this song. He has a good voice and I've heard him harmonize with Nick Lowe on other songs. Did D.E. simply not have the right register for this song?
@highschoolmusical841 My comment was in response to the comment regarding the great musical acts that apopeared on the short lived ABC SNL-ripoff "Fridays". Nothing to do with Nick or Dave...it was just some love for Joe & Mick- still to this day, the only band that matters....
These guys are criminally underappreciated in the USA. Not by all, but by some.
Great Group! I had a Rockpile T-Shirt when I was living in Berkeley during the early 80's.
@coogan8825 Nice! I saw Nick open from Elvis Costello. They were both excellent!
Fantastic harmony vocals by Billy Bremner, a great guitarist
Grew up in SF Bay Area. Had the privilege of seeing Rockpile live on same bill as Elvis Costello, Mink DeVille and Ian Dury, what a show!!!
I saw Nick and Elvis in Berkeley!
One of the greatest, short lived groups- Period
Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds "solo" albums from that period were really Rockpile albums.
Underated for sure.
They are so good!
He's singing and chewing gum AND playing bass. First time I saw him he was also smoking a cigarette AND drinking from a beer bottle, while playing bass and singing. Not fair, is it - too much talent!
Nick's had a lot of practice!
These guys were the real deal, I keep a poster of them from the Rockpile record in my studio to remind me where my energy level should be, when I get lazy. Thanks guys.
Everyone knows Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe, but how 'bout some love for Billy Bremner.
RManFlint hell yes. He’s great
abso effin lutely
Love him. He harmonizes wonderfully in this song.
And if anyone cares to know, one of James Honeyman Scott's favorite guitarists.
Amen brother
Nick Lowe can be my teacher any time - of course just for teaching me playing bass, singing and chewing gum all at the same time ;-)
"Seconds of Pleasure" a truly fine rock/party album all the the songs around 2 minutes or incredible talents...Rock, Rock, And more Rock!
Terry williams the drummer rocks legend !!!!!
Dire straits
This is a great song from the old times. Love Rockpile :)
I will say it now: I've been in and around the music business for 30+ years, been to thousands of shows from house parties to stadiums, and I NEVER saw a rock'nroll
band that was better than Rockpile.

Rockpile Teacher Teacher Live on TV 1980 sooooo young and soooo dripping with talent! What a great song.....thank u for posting.

Nick Lowe singing live while chewing gum - love it !!

Yes, I remember the Stray Cats!!!!
The Jam
The Cars, a couple of times, in their heyday
In 1978 I saw them open for Van Morrison in Philly at the Tower Theater. Pretty cool 😎
A great song and band.
@whitford70 Billy Bremner is one of the vastly underappreciated talents around. He makes every song he plays on better.
Wow! 29 years ago to the day. Music was so much better back then, said the sad old man... :-)
Long Live Rockpile!
In this video, Billy Bremner sings backup! No wonder I was hearing a second voice on the album recording.
@pattywig007 Thanks for the memory, Patty. JuJu Man was a popular set closer

Eddie Phillips wrote that song, he is a legend :)
studio version entered Billboard Nov 22, 1980 ..reached #51
Thanks for uploading, never seen it before. As the bumper sticker on my old Plymouth read, "Rockpile Rules"
SO GREAT !!!
THANX !!!
These guys have some amazing harmony. Especially on their Everly Brothers covers.
This was on Fridays - proof positive that the only reason anyone watched that show was for its music guests.
Also the only reason I watched most sessions of SNL.
@RManFlint Couldn't agree more! Billy was very underrated, what a nice clean ringing sound he has in this song. Also, Terry Williams...WOW! He's all over the drum kit on this one. I wish they showed more of him in this song.
Thanks for uploading this! What an awesome video from some Real Rockers, with substance......amazing!
The tightest band around. These guys were like twins who finish each other's thoughts.
saw these guys open for elvis costello in the late seventies at the santa monica civic...poor elvis costello, they rocked the house and elvis could not compete.
Love these guys. I use this song to bring up the teachers for my "Trivia Showdown Game Show" @ schools.
What a great f----- band! Rock 'n roll at its finest. Too bad they couldn't keep the band together for more than one album.
They each played on each others albums. They had like 4. Same band. But just one rockpile album though.
awesome
Beats me how Billy Bremner did all this and still turned out for Leeds United every saturday
I wanted this record back then, but it was sold out.
I love your user name. I snagged a lot of these old clips on my beta machines as well, and still use beta to this day. I have all three songs from this show as well as a lot of other Fridays clips.
Great channel Beta Classics!
BAD TEACHER led me here!!!
@cckeach7 Don't forget the Clash jamming 2 songs into each 3 minute set! London Calling album supported at breakneck pace...

Rockpile=BEATLES !
Air date December 19, 1980
❤️👍🏻
If I'm not mistaken, shortly after Rockpile broke up, "Fridays" got cancelled a year or two later.
I'm speaking from ignorance--I am curious why Dave Edmunds didn't sing harmony or backup on this song. He has a good voice and I've heard him harmonize with Nick Lowe on other songs. Did D.E. simply not have the right register for this song?
Is this the version played in the "Bad Teacher" intro? Or did they make a cover for that?
They where young her Dave and Nick who was the credit to Dave or Nick
I wondered Y I never saw this but this was the day I married lol
Bad Teacher
Or... GREAT teacher! :)
BEATLE !!!!!!

You're killing me: too much bill, not enough dave
Andy W you cant have too much Billy
He actually looked a bit like Paul McCartney back then. All that's missing is the Hoffman/Beatle bass!
Xcorgi hofner Beatle bass
great band & not a fruit in the lot.
@SurelyYouJoust ,These cat's were their OWN beatles
@janinefloyd he's aged well and looks pretty decent for a 60+-year-old guy, so maybe you weren't born in the wrong decade :-)
