A barbershop conversation between Steve Stoute, Future, Ebro, James Harden, and Maverick Carter popped up on Instagram recently. The trendsetters debated whether the masses revered Jay Z’s classic debut, Reasonable Doubt when first released in 1996. According to Future, “Jay Z wasn’t great when Tupac and Biggie were alive.” The discussion inspired the final #DXBreakdown of 2016, where we celebrate Ready To Die and Life After Death, and argue why Biggie Ain’t The GOAT. Let's break it down.
Is the Notorious B.I.G. still the greatest ever? Share your thoughts in the Community Section below. Follow the discussion on all socials. #DXBreakdown

I feel like millennials just gave Biggie a pass with calling him a goat because that's all we'd hear growing up. Now that we're old enough to really put his career into perspective, we can make our own opinions.
Agreed. The legacy looms larger than memory.

i always said Nas is better than BIG (no disrespect) everyone loves BIG, but i rock wit Nas
Thanks, DJ.
DJ Jon804 I agree. Nas has range. Biggie is not in my top five, for the lack of range, but also because he doesn't have enough material to justify goat status. Goat status is about bodies of work.
DJ Jon804
yesssssss
Nas has one classic album. BIG has two and both of those albums are widely considered to be two of the best hip hop albums ever. BIG was better in every way. Better flow, better pen, better beat selection, etc.
Jevin June Khalid voice. You smart. I don't get how some niggas doesn't care about range when it comes to some of these so-called emcees. Perfect analogy. Dudes who have no range are like niggas who plays b ball in the park and is known as playground legend's, but if that same dude had to play in the NBA he would get his ass bust everyday.
biggie had flow but 2pac was for the culture changing the world and how we think
Which has nothing to do with rap. So that don't make him the goat of rap.
@@JahleelX-xx9wd lol
Biggie best flow
2pac best story teller
Eminem best lyricist
Rakim is who really changed it
Jalazel all of that is great but again what does any of that have to do with his body of music? 2Pac has a vastly larger body of music compared to Biggie and yet they are both held in the same regard. If we were talking about over all impact to the world then PAC is definitely the winner. But as far as artistically and musically Biggie is the clear and obvious winner.

Ready to die is enough to label him the GOAT, the same way Illmatic is enough to label Nas, most GOAT rappers have only 2-3 classics including Pac, Nas, DMX, Eminem, Kanye, Jay z etc, so Biggie definitely is a GOAT. He has two of the best albums ever and he's proved himself technically, it's a no brainer, he's definitely worthy of the GOAT tag.
lightning zoldyck *THANK YOU.*
lightning zoldyck i disagree with that state ment. not that biggie or Nas isn't a goat the fact the goat rappers have 2-3 classic albums . Kid cudi has 2 (3 if you wanna count a kid named cudi but im not) Kendrick has 2 and Cole has one for sure (fnl ) and alot consider 2014 fhd a classic but you don't see them in convo for the Goat (besides kdot)
Commandosoap777 Cudi's last 4 or 5 projects have been truly horrible. Commercial appeal is a part of the conversation and Cudi flat out hasn't had that since his debut. J. Cole gets bogged down by basically refusing to have features. I love his music, but J. Cole just doesn't appeal to the general public. Kendrick might end up being THE goat but old heads keep saying it's too early.
its obvious you dont get it.
Based on just lyrical content alone J. Cole has more than proven himself in my opinion. Just wanted to point that out and lyricism is subjective. People tend to weigh in their opinions based on how they like an artist. Even if that said artist does not display much consciousness I don't think that takes away from there all around skill. It only distinguishes them from being just a battle rapper to an MC. That said I do believe biggie is one if not the GOAT as well as Jay-Z. You can see how much they contributed to the game in terns of style an charism Reasonable Doubt can go over peoples heads and is to date the most lyrical album of all time and that won't change anytime soon. Not even Jay can match his first album and he had twenty years to do so. If we don't include the personal and political aspect of MCing than than list of GOAT's would probably be somewhat like this.
1.Jay-z 2.Biggie 3.Eminim 4.Nas and so on
but that's just my opinion.

Clout Lord fair point, I just think they would’ve had a good effect on the industry. At least we’d have more lyrical rappers to listen to but I see your point
jay z blew after pac n big died that a fact
HOUSE SESSION Future was on point wit that
That doesn't mean he blew BECAUSE they died. Logical Reasoning Fail.
The argument that Jay only blew bc Big and Pac died is made by fuck boys with the rap IQ of DJ Akademics. Their deaths made it harder or Jay to become the GOAT. He was competing with the insurmountable legend of ghosts. NAS v JAY is an easier comparison bc they have had equally sustained careers and produced a body of work in the different eras that we can judge and compare to see whose been consistently greater. You arguably will never defeat two legends who died in their prime. This argument is stupid. Jay Z's Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, Hard Knock Life, Black Album, American Gangster, Blueprint 3, and 444 out of Big and Pacs ashes and when they died, he wasn't even the next in line. If the death created a vaccum of greatness that pushed the next person in without regard for their merit, then Method Man, Redman, LL, Raekwon, Nas, Andre 3K, Rakim, Raekwon, or any number of the other dozen rappers bigger than him would have been the goAT who went on to break Beatles records, drop more classics in every decade since, and give the world Kanye. This shit is dumb.
Yeah I agree wit 2PAC OBAMA, I think Nas and Jay are a better comparison. Just because somebody realized their true potential later in life don't mean they're not as great as the people who succeeded earlier. But all in all I think Nas gets the nod on this convo. Sure Jay is more mainstream and has more recognition with his charisma and wit, but Nas was always the better lyricist, no doubt in my mind.
Shawn Wang nas is way better than biggie anyway
yeah he isn't the GOAT bc Nas is.
Talk that shit!!!
absolutely, nobody was ever close to Nas, he was way ahead of his time
The R. That song is incredible, but making a better diss track at someone, doesn't make you better than them overall
M. Man nas only had one good album. It was written was too mainstream, I am/ Nastradamus were average at best.
Nas is the greatest we've seen at this point in time. I always thought it was interesting how people chose BIG over Nas when Illmatic is considered one of the greatest - if not the greatest - Rap albums of all time (ranked higher than Ready to Die). Neither of the 2 Biggie albums can touch that one album (which happens to be a debut), so based off that alone, I always gave it to Nas by default.

I don't know why bro was hiding behind the ''my opinion'' shit, no stop it no sane individual is going to get at you for saying the truth Biggie and Jay didn't have a Keep Ya Head Up, Holla If Ya Hear Me, Brenda's Got A Baby. It's not an opinion its fact Biggie was not a politically aware artist, well as far as his content that is.
You're right but I don't think he was aiming to be that type of rapper. I've always said BIG was the GOAT flow/delivery artist.
Even in his time there were better lyricists but no one could flow as nice as he could, maybe today it's different since flow and delivery have become the top priority so it would make sense that rappers nowadays flow incredibly well but that doesn't take away that in his time no one could flow as nice as he could.
The only 90s rapper that I think holds a candle to BIG is Big Pun and he didn't debut until after BIG had passed, if you want to talk overrall GOATs I think Big Pun is it, he had the flow the lyrics and he even had some conscious rap content which BIG didn't.
"Either you slanging crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot" that's pretty aware if you ask me
Samuel Gonzalez Content wise Tupac put out plenty of garbage as well. If all you want is great subjective content rap, just listen to Chuck D, Kool moe dee , KRS ONE, and public enemy for the rest of your life.
whatthehellvideos so one bar makes you a conscious rapper?
That's the thing tho... Every person can find a piece that they like in Tupac's discography. Gangsta rap, conscious themes or 90s party jams. Pac had everything in him. That's what makes him a GOAT imo.
And he delivered em with such a passion too...
People miss PAC more than they miss Biggie.. Fact. Respect to both legends.

Why I think Biggie is one of the greatest of all time;
Even though he only had two official albums, Ready to Die and Life After Death, what appeals to me and many others is his lyrics, flow, and his straight up rhythm. He may have been lacking in content due to his unexpected murder in ‘97, months before his second album debuted, but from the reasons I just listed, I personally he’s in the top 10.
He was murdered about 2 weeks or so before Life After Death actually, not a few months. R.I.P. Biggie
Theres a lot of rappers who a just as good as biggie in every way some a even better jus my opinion. The only 1 of a kind rapper in my opinion is Tupac
This may be true, but we're not talking about top 10, we're talking about GOAT. Sure, he's top 10, but he AIN'T THE GOAT. That is Kendrick or Tupac IMO.
@@space_orphanKendrick is no where near the goat and biggie is above tupac

no he's not. Jay Z was considered great when it came out to rap literate people who knew the culture. Reasonable Doubt was a classic, but wasn't commercially successful until later. People forget Jay Dame & Biggs were independent. Unheard of in NY at that time bc you needed label backing and radio play. They started their own label on drug money and shot videos and still blew up but not immediately. Illmatic was a slow seller the first year out the gate too. I think Ready to Die is top 10 rap albums, because it´s in my opinion one of the deepest hip hop albums that still is great sonically. I was on a school trip bus listening to it for the first time, then I heard the song Suicidal Thoughts, and I was out of words. The entire album is a simple Rags to riches concept, but done so masterfully. While Pac often talked about societies problems, he rarely talked about his deep problems. While he talked about shooting and robbing he was talking about how bad it is, for example in Gimme the loot. And the line in Juicy about people calling the police is genius. He painted the gangster struggle in a way nobody else has. It´s like a less direct version of ScHoolboy Q´s Oxymoron, the way he compares the positives and negatives of his life. Rarely we get an album that talks about childhood and adulthood in such a way. Just let me quote some lines to help you understand.
Suicidal thoughts: I know my mother wish she got a fucking abortion.
Juicy: Goddamn I love my life, cause I went from negative to positive.
While Jay-Z and most other rappers when doing brag-raps sound like they think they´re better than us (especially with the I fucked your bitch concept), I sympathize with Biggie, that´s why I think Juicy is one of the saddest rap songs, along with Kanye´s Hey Momma for the same reason, because when he finally reached success he died.
After listening to this album I thought of Biggie like some close friend who I´m afraid for.
While I didn´t like Life after Death so much, it´s still one of the best technical rap albums. His flow is unstoppable on that project.
Pac seemed to delve into his personal issues more so than Big did. So Many Tears is one example but there are countless others. Letter to my Unborn Child and Do For Love come to mind. I suggest you listen to more of his work.
pac rarely talked about his deepest problems??wtf you talking about?pac did that alot,,,havent you heard songs like my only fear of death.pac rap about his deepest problems alot.
ChannelX I only listened to MATW and his Greatest hits, but I plan to give all his albums a listen. Could you suggest to me a Pac album to listen to?
SkyRip I would have recommended Me Against The World first and foremost. You should already know how personal his music is since you've heard it before. I'm confused as to why you'd think otherwise. His first three albums are his most personal, though. Big's storytelling may appeal to you more than Pac's raw emotion.
I honestly think Big L is a bigger 'what if' than Biggie

Something hit me when I was listening to "Machine Gun Funk," what if Biggie's plans were to tell a story about being above the gangster kind of life? He says we know the story, but it would only be a piece of his life - not the whole thing. There was a lot more life to live, and it's sad we'll never know how he would have matured as an artist.

This was an amazing video. Awesome content
Why do people act like BIG wasn't deep as a Artist. His Albums were dark sonicaly and had messages in them..He had songs like Suicidal thoughts, Sky is the Limit, Everyday Struggle, Mo Money more problems, You're nobody til somebody kills you. He wasn't just an Radio rapper that could flow.
Tim Frieden but all those songs were on the albums he just named. Listen to some PAC and you'll know why biggie isn't the goat.
# Facts Not saying Big is the Goat, Pac Albums are inconsistent and not as well put together as B.I.G's only two projects. B.I.G had way better flows and the beats sounded better sonically..Tupac albums have tons of filler don't lie. Quality over Quantity. I just think Pac was more of a icon off the mic that's why we put him up so high, his persona was one of a kind. But on the mic pac not fucking with B.i.G as a MC
Yeh Biggie could touch lightly on some deep subjects but Tupac touched people on a far deeper level than any other MC..and his delivery was more heartfelt and passionate..he covered a huge range of issues and subjects in his body of work in 4 years, that most artists need 20 yrs to write.
markus2377 Pac was more political but never had no bars and never switched his flows yes he talked about various things but it was all general things that you easily can identify with...Societal issues, war on black america etc..He told stories but the music behind the stories weren't up to par with his lyrics..Biggie told the stories of the streets in a grittier and more realistic way..He was way darker and spoke for ones on the outside of society. He was a suicidal poet . He was deeper in his soul while Pac was more wise so to speak..But when you look at it in a musical aspect Big's albums are far better put together from the production to his rhyme schemes, the use of melody and the overall consistency. You have to think he was only 24 when he died I'm just trying to figure out why people like to label him as a flashy rick ross type artist when he isn't . He was a true MC.
+Tim Frieden big was deeper in his soul ? Have you even listened to much Tupac? He is the deepest MC of all time, and Tupac also died at 24-25 yrs old and accomplished much much more than mot artists do in a lifetime..bigs productions were great because of Puffy..that's all..BIG is def one of the greatest but PAC was on a level of his own as an artist.
Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Eminem, Immortal Technique, Big L, Diabolic, Talib Kwali, Lupe Fiasco, Big Pun, Kendril, Jay Cole, Wu Tang are all incredibly great.
Also, I feel like people are underrating both Ready to Die and Life After Death. They were not just two "hot" albums, they were genre defining, industry shifting pieces of art. I personally feel like The Beatles would still be in the running for greatest rock group if they only released Rubber Soul and Revolver, Biggie I feel should still be treated the same way.
Same could be said about Kendrick with GKMC and TPAB, which I would argue are better albums than Ready to Die and Life After Death (I would argue TPAB is greatest album of all time). Plus Kendrick has 4 more great albums to back up his GOAT claim.
The biggie lovin baby at the end is fucking priceless hahaha
I have to respectfully disagree when it comes to Jay-Z. I know a lot of people are not big fans of Jay-Z I hear it all the time especially in Texas but if you really listen to Reasonable Doubt Jay-Z does show that range of personal awareness and social awareness. You have songs like "can I live" " 22 twos" D'Evils you have songs like "Dead Presidents" Jay-Z shows his range in that album you just either not actually listening to the album or the album is so complex that it goes over your head because Jay-Z does use a lot of metaphors now I have to kind of agree with future Jay-Z was not hot until after Biggie and Pac because Jay-Z's first two albums was questionable his career was on the line until he dropped his third album Hard Knock Life that's when you started seeing Jay-Z as a mainstream artist. now if you want to put in rapper in the light of not showing personal awareness social awareness and just all about money cars clothes and hoes Lil Wayne is that example after Carter 1 which is one of Lil Wayne's best and personal albums that he's ever put out all his other albums are about money cars clothes hoes his mixtapes are all about money cars clothes and hoes and. he shows no personal experience he says no social awareness. I mean honestly what can you tell me about Lil Wayne what have you learned about Lil Wayne as in what has he gone through personally in life what is Lil Wayne's story pretty much other than this is the kid that was with cash money yes fine but Lil Wayne never talked about his childhood and his raps he never talks about his upbringing he never talks about his personal relationship with his mother he never talks about his personal relationship with his dad or anything like that. but I bet you know Jay-Z story I bet you know biggie story I bet you know Tupac story you know Nas story you know Eminem story but you know nothing about Lil Wayne but that's my opinion that's my argument peace love and happy New Years to everyone and much success to you all God bless
Lil Wayne does have a song about his father passing. I distinctively remember seeing the video for it on 106& Park and it really stood out to me because it was very heartfelt.
Dang you right. I forgot about that song. However, not a lot cares about Lil Wayne's first 3 albums.
Justin White that's true, I mean he does have his core fans that's been with him from the gate of course but even I myself didn't really pay attention to him til he dropped that Go DJ joint and then took off from there. I'm just saying that I have seen him get personal more than once.
I feel ya bro. You be surprised how many people think Carter 1 was his first album.
Justin White lmao I've never heard anyone say that before but I can definitely imagine it. Who do you listen to?
it's a funny world that we live in
so you're discussing lil Wayne as the Goat and on the other hand you're saying that biggie isn't the Goat
it's not about quantity it's about quality
what biggie did in three years , lil Wayne won't do in a million years
life after death and ready to die are one the greatest albums of all Time can lil Wayne compete with that
Well, it's a series, so a number of artists have been and will be covered. Second, it's all about perspective, which is what the GOAT series aims to capture. Thanks for checking it Notorious Makavelli.
NOTORIOUS MAKAVELLI Wayne has Carters 1-3, Dedication 2, drought 3 and no ceilings
Carter 5 gonna be a classic as well
True Wayne shouldnt be compared to Biggie at all
Wayne's prime run was quality stuff tho
I can listen to both of Biggie's albums from beginning to end and all those trucks are banging I can't say that about any other rapper so in my book biggie is the goat
Does anyone know the background music throughout the video
How do you have a conversation with future?
Have you heard him talk, or are you just running with a tired joke?
SpottieOttie Yeah ive heard him talk and he rarely talks with any real substance.
Myke The conversation they were having in the barbershop was full of substance.. It was a fair point and he was right IMO
X_Online Not really
Myke How was he not right. Please explain to me how what he stated about Jay wasn't right. Jay wasn't hot when Big and Pac were around. Reasonable Doubt started popping after they died. So where was he wrong?
Speaking of Outkast... that would be an episode.
Ian Cropley Wish granted
Biggie was all commercial, except for a few select tracks. He only ever talked about money and women and the gangster life. One could argue that he was never given a chance to be concious because of his untimely demise.
Mega Rayquaza Gaming Extremely wrong he had emotional and socially conscious songs. Like everyday struggle, skys the limit, suicidal thoughts, miss U etc

B- Bitter if pac made biggie famous then it was most probably all a dream... See what I did there
@@b-bitter91 You clearly was not born at that time. BIG would blow up no matter what, and I am sure BIG was bigger then Pac the entire last half of the 90s. That's what it felt like at least.
Renegade?? I think we can all agree that's owned by Eminem.
john amos lmao stop calling anyone who tells the truth Stan
john amos exactly. Eminem's verse was AMAZING from a lyrically technical standpoint however Jay Z's verses were meaningful and had deep and impactful lines while also giving you some technically brilliant rhymes (not far off from Eminem). People act as if Jay Z spat the wackest bars of all time and that it was worse than Omelly's freestyle on Sway. "Mmmm mmmm mmmmmmmmm. Mmmm mmm mmm mmmm mmmmm mmm" 😂 😂😂😂😂 but seriously, give Jay some credit
No........It's Eminem's song. But it was given to Jay for that album. His verse was on both versions and Jay's replaced Royce's. Em didn't even have to change it up. Jay may not have flowed nicely but his verse his great. You can probably find both on CZcams.
+Official DMC Jay's verse had more meaning? i think em's brilliant technicality veered your attention away from what his lines meant. Jay lacked in technicality hence he had no jaw dropping rhymes to snatch your focus away from what he was saying. A hard hitting rhyme from eminem would leave your mind bewilderment and force you to decipher and swallow that lyrical moment. By that time em would have already rapped on. when your attention was back and trying to follow what he had rapped right after his punchline, he would again release another punchline or double entandre, thus leaving your mind in a cycle of bafflement.
Trevin Fernandes never said it had more or less meaning than Em's verse, it's just that Jay's verse is much better than people think it is and Renegade wasn't a complete Eminem landslide as some would have you believe
Honestly, I NEVER liked Jay Z & I STILL don't. He isn't even 2% as good as BIG & doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Tupac. Nas said everything than could & should have been said in Ether.
I actually listen to his music i dont just skim through it" ahaha siccunt really like this channel good work
I hate when people just tell you that so and so is the goat, but I love when people explain why they think that. Don't state your opinion as fact, tell us why you think that way.
Faxxx
Agreed. I'll respect any opinion if you can back it up👍🏽
People act like there can only be one GOAT when actuality there can be multiple, this is a fact if said rapper is respected by other rappers then they are a GOAT period, if they added something new to hip hop they are a GOAT, saying one is better than another is ridiculous, because the all made an impact in different ways. If they had an impact on Hip Hop they are a GOAT, unless someone can break down each rappers greatest albums and explain why it isn't as good as every other rapper in the running for GOAT then there is no reason trying to act like one is greater than another, anyone in the running to be a GOAT is a GOAT period: Ice Cube, Biggie, Nas, Eminem, 2Pac, Immortal Technique, KRS-One, Big L, Big Pun, LL Cool J, MF Doom, Jay-Z, Tech N9ne, Andre 3000, Rakim, Snoop Dogg, Ghostface Killah, Redman, GZA, Raekwon, Slick Rick, Lil Wayne, Lauren Hill, Queen Latifah, Common, Mos Def, Scarface, DMX, Kendrick Lamar, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, Lupe Fiasco, Kool M Dee, Canabis, Talib Kwali, MC Lyte, Black Thought, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and that list will grow as rap music continues
Range of topics isn't a big enough problem to take someone out of the goat convo. Biggie isn't great because he addressed a lot of issues, he's great because of his flows, wordplays, and lyricism.
We need the breakdown series to make a comeback
I had to watch the video before making any judgements on the title which I wasn’t feeling at all. I feel your point, a lot...
till this day ready to die is my favorite hip hop album of all time, and producer easy mo bee killed the production on that joint.
Definitely agree. Easy Mo Bee wrecked shop.
There's no GOAT. Anybody who changes the face of hip hop is a GOAT.
King David 314 a ton a rappers have changed the game
I like that perspective. Thanks, KD.
***** thanks a lot.
Derryl So exactly. There's no one goat. Tupac is one, Rakim, Grandmaster Caz, Ice Cube. Everybody has had a contribution that's etched in time is a goat.
King David 314 true
You hit the nail on the head; on all levels well said very well said.
I was mind blown by this fresh perspective. Totally unrelated, you kind of look like me and I have 5 month old dreads that are exactly the same length as yours. My fiance sent me the link and said she found my look alike, and I was not disappointed 😂
Why Biggie's not the best is really fucking simple. He only released two studio albums! You can't be considered the greatest of all time with such a lack of content and longevity. A lot of people can put out two hot albums. Just imagine if 50 Cent was killed after the Massacre dropped...
Tomn8er is Get Rich or Die Trying better than Ready to Die.... Not even close
Tomn8er it's the impact he had with two albums. You know with a third album he would have still killed it. There isn't one song from those two albums that you can say, shit I didn't like that one to much.
Tomn8er if DMX was killed after the release of “and then there was x”
My god your idiotic theory really gives me a headache
Tomn8er after the massacre 50 would never be considered the greatest stop smoking crack
Biggie is the Greatest of all time, in my opinion. I know he only released two albums ("Ready To Die" and "Life After Death"), but it's not about the quantity, it's about the quality of the work. With just one album, "Ready To Die", he was able to change rap. I use the phrase, "change rap" because prior to the release of "Ready To Die" West Coast hip hop was dominating. "Ready To Die" was the album that ultimately led to the resurgence of the East Coast hip hop scene. It's incredible for an artist to have that level of success and impact after just one album. "All Eyez on Me" was Tupac Shakur's fourth album; "Vol 2...Hard Knock Life" was Jay Z's third studio album. I use those two examples because those are the albums that gave those artists crossover success.
I also think Biggie is the greatest lyricist of all time. BIG was not a socially conscious rapper. He was more of an entertainer than a socially conscious poet. But, the fact that he didn't make socially conscious records doesn't make him less of a rapper. Bob Dylan made socially conscious music, Frank Sinatra didn't- but Frank Sinatra was still a better singer. Luther Vandross didn't make socially conscious music, but he is still one of the greatest R&B male vocalists of all time.
Another reason why I feel BIG is the GOAT is because his art sold. "Ready to Die" was certified 4x platinum by the RIAA in 1999. "Life After Death" sold 690,000 copies in its first week, and was certified diamond by the RIAA in 2000. So BIG had critical acclaim and commercial success right from the beginning. NAS's debut album, "Illmatic, was critically acclaimed, but didn't sell. Jay-Z's "Reasonable Doubt" is a masterpiece but initially it didn't sell.
Biggie was also more efficient than most rappers. He was able to produce a specific outcome (his music) with a minimum amount or quantity of waste or unnecessary effort. People that worked with him say almost everything he recorded was usable material (it was good enough to be used). If an artist has a vault of unreleased music hidden away, to me that says that most of that material was unusable (it wasn't good enough to be released).
Biggie was also one of the most influential artists of all time. He influenced Jay Z, Lil' Kim, JADAKISS, and several others.
I respect everyone's opinion. Music is subjective. But, Biggie is my guy (the GOAT).
lombe Ng'andu I agree completely biggie and Hov my top 2
Tupac had far wider range when it came to different flows, different moods, emotion, and subject matter...and never come off sounding corny. His words and rhymes may not seem as flashy but they hold significantly more weight, I would say he had the widest range of any rapper or MC ever.
I don't believe it was just ready to die that changed rap. You have to include 36 chambers and illmatic, as they were just as if not more important
Doom will always be the GOAT to me
lombe Ng'andu He is huge influence but a GOAT no. His Life After Death only went diamond because it was released not long after he died. Everyone knows that deceased artist make more money. Plus, lyrically Eminem could beat him. He would be challenged but would still lose. Watch both Eminem and BIG's freestyles. Plus, one deserve the GOAT title more than LL Cool J. Do some research on him then respond. And I'm not just talking from the surface.
2pac by far, he had it all, he was on another level
Except lyricism

to be be perfectly frank, i love 2pac as much as biggie, but recently while playing my NAS radio playlist on pandora, they somehow put 2pac on the list, and i just felt annoyed by his voice. just not in the mood for him, but as soon as listen to biggie or nas, it just puts me at ease. Strange, really, i used to rock to "God bless the dead" by PAC all the time, love the production on it. and no, its not about biggie, its about Big Drik, who went by biggie smalls on the streets. but yeah, no 2pac for now i guess.

Yes indeed. It showed the growth taking place in BiG as an artist. I believe his 3rd and 4th projects wouldve been legendary as well. Unfortunately he didnt have that chance so thats why this video its nonsense. The impact BiG made with only 2 albums makes him GOAT status. Btw dont respond to that other guy he's clearly trolling. I think Biggie is the goat because he had two albums and is considered the goat if Jay just had his first two as his only albums he would have been swept under the rug. This is also the same for Tupac his first two albums wasn't as dope as his last two that he was alive for imo

I believe the Vox video explains it very well, Biggie changed the way people looked at flow forever. He's not THE goat in my book but he's gotta be top 10 at least just for how crucial his first album was. It's the blueprint of a hip hop album (just as much as Illmatic if not more) and his next 2 were fantastic as well.

All you're talking about is how better Jay-Z was than Biggie. Nigga Jay-Z was known to steal off Biggie after he died, puffy gave him his rhyme book and Jay-Z used that to his advantage for years, that's a part of why he was so successful.

HipHopDX That's Also True
He made "You Must Love Me" in his early catalogue (vol.1) which is probably his most emotional song ever, in vol.3 and Roc la familia, there was also songs that showed huge range whether art-wise or personal-wise. Song cry is a great song but I am pretty sure that he had way better songs in his earlier catalogue that are of the same material.
Say he is not the goat but he will always be the king of Brooklyn facts 💯🎤
Sorry but I get upset whenever LL Cool J is never mentioned, this man thrived for 3 decades, even Jadakiss considered LL as one of the GOATS.
