They deliberately killed the previous 'all buildings must be net zero by 2016' plan in 2015, _after_ the house-builders had done the preparation and were ready for it (if a bit moany). That was criminal. The replacement scheme (the name of which I have forgotten) had the fatal flaw of requiring commercial returns on the loans, so everything cost 7%-10% which ruined the economics. It should have been interest-free like this Canadian scheme. So that was a flop. A couple of years later they tried the Green Deal which had excellent underpinnings, but screwed it up with hopeless (US-based) admin so builders didn't get paid and grants were hard to get. Then rather than sack the adminstrators and fix things, they killed the whole scheme after 6 months, and 3 years later we still have no plan. So we've had 17 years so far of trying to get a mass retrofit scheme and decent new-build standards going in the UK and almost nothing has been done to actual houses since various schemes to fit insulation were killed in 2012. It really has been a massive failure, and is so frustrating because it would have saved the country nearly 3 billion/yr when the energy-price crisis hit last year, as well as reducing emissions and generally heading us in the right direction. It's hard to understand such a combination of incompetence and mendacity.
We still have the NSBRC (National Self-Build and Renovation Centre) in Swindon which has lots of examples and holds training sessions. What was the one that closed?
We also had building regulations that required all new builds to be Code 6 (net zero) by 2016 which were repealed under Cameron. Admittedly, in 2010-11 most designs for Code 6 homes were outstandingly ugly.

Start small, you can do it. Each step should save you money in a few months period. Then you can afford the next step.... And so on... I can't tell you your individual steps, i don't know your situation enough, but you should never stop improving.
In Sweden/Norway there are already many wood/passive houses with very good isolation and windows, most of the new ones in facts. Add a heating pumps scavenging ventilation heat and some solar panels, you get already zero emission (at least for electricity) and excellent inhouse comfort.
New construction is fine, but (in the UK) we seriously need to address the existing building stock. My wife and I are pretty much abandoning our ambition of having an Enerphit renovation of our house because of three reasons: 1. Meeting the ultra conservative tastes of our local planning officer heaped unnecessary costs onto the project. 2. Getting architects, quantity surveyors and builders who are competent to carry out this sort of work and honest seems impossible. 3. The costs are prohibitive, and the fallout from the UK's string of inept and unelected leaders has just made that worse.
Yeh, the planning rules need to change so badly. Not being able add double glazing or Solar to a listed building is so backwards, especially if it's pout of site or low impact. More, all new builds in the UK should be adding solar, heat pumps and high grade glazing as standard, we are just adding to the existing problems of poorly insulated drafty homes.
when i went to community college r2000 was the big thing for the future, ultimately 2x6 outer envelope studs that edge out over foam wrapped floor headers and rims, i spose it's just gonna be one of those forgotten things.
- agree with the sentiment - if you understand energy flows - one can do "anything" to improve a building performance - mainly, doing the construction properly. (Ie. stick the bits together as they are intended - in the system).
@@tonykelpieif you have Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery this makes trickle vents unnecessary. A hygrometer sensor in the bathroom and kitchen can automatically cause the ventilation to be boosted when you're cooking or having a shower. All the incoming fresh air is warmed by the outgoing stale/wet air so you never feel a cold draft.
@@simonjones1342that is what I have, I think mine is 86% efficient, no vents on windows, no draughts, no humidity at all. Hard to retrofit, but should be required on individual new builds.
@@simonjones1342 we have a heat pump to scavenge energy from the outbound air and heats the radiator loop. Vents straight out in most rooms provide fresh air, but at -20C and colder, that’s a bit chilly near them.
BC is doing a lot of great things! I think we need to prioritize condos with mixed-use development (e.g. stacked apartments over stores, with common areas) over single-family homes because it uses less resources and offers an overall better quality of life. We definitely should require all large new buildings, and existing large ones retrofitted, to be net zero by a certain date, and then reduce the size to be required to be net zero over time. The incentives should be aligned with income, i.e. lower incentives for high-income folks and higher incentives for low-income folks, and do the full retrofit for the poorest at no cost.
Is this report accurate? This report says homes in Canada are required to "... basically [be] passive houses" Is this true, or do they not know what a "passive house" is?
Does it take more energy to keep a house cool in a hot environment or keep a house warm in a cold environment? To keep it simple, a 15 degrees difference from inside to outside temps.
Good question. Keeping warm is helped by people and things switched on, for cooling all that fights against the cooler. Not sure what the end result is.

Internal temperature means nothing. Heat loss is what you need to measure. A passive house with no solar shading in summer could be 35 degrees. Same house mid winter could be 5 degrees if it has no internal heat source.
The townhouse I grew up in had a vestibule/coat room at the front entry. Sadly, it also had leaky single-pane windows and flimsy back door. However, that vestibule rocked for keeping warm air inside during frigid winters. Don’t know why it isn’t built into more homes.

The UK, today, has granted licenses for the nation's largest oilfield. Scotland is the world leader in tidal-flow generation but Westminster shelves tidal projects. It's estimated there's enough tidal energy to supply the whole country, with excess to sell, & enough timing variation around the coasts to have no dead times.

When all electricity is from renewables and/or battery storage the price won’t be based on the cost of fossil fuels. It will be much lower in price so we do not need to be over zealous on reducing energy use. Yes it’s a ‘good’ thing but bringing all buildings to a level that only a minimal energy input is not necessarily desirable. Older and listed buildings do work, and if more (renewable) electricity energy is required to heat and power them, does that matter, especially if the cost is so much less?
Not at all true, but carry on crying and doing nothing. I live in a passiv Haus. It might add 10% to the build cost, but the design is dictated by effeciency rather than design. Then 10% extra is fine when my heating bill last year was £120 for the whole winter and my electric bill is £45 a month.

The UK used to have similar training facilities, but they were closed 11 years ago. They funded training for SIP quick build techniques.

it gets talked about heaps. ERVs or HRVs get used to bring in filtered fresh air.

I built my own low carbon high efficiency Passiv Haus for £45 grand approx plus land and taxes, Nice to know I am considered rich now.
So you pay it in tax and then get it back as grants. I guess it fools some people.
This sounds like a good social policy. Helping others out with your tax and when you want a bit you apply for a grant.
