It took me 10 years to get my Kyokushin black belt and another 4 years to get my 2nd degree black belt. My black belt test was the last my teacher gave, as he had cancer and died two months later. So, it was emotional for everybody. But another big thing happened. My father died 4 days before the test. I went to get my black belt the day of the funeral. I was in another state of mind. I felt like throwing up and giving up many times during the test, but I kept telling myself : «If I throw up, I throw up. If I fail, I fail. It's just a moment that will pass. It will not last.» It was the biggest lesson of my life on how to be in the here and now and accompany myself, second by second.

I started my Kyokushin Training in 1985 with a few years miss in total, I can tell you one test where we did roughly 33 different Kihon techniques 100 times each. That was our warm up. 100 squats 100 push ups 100 sit ups. on top of that. However our sparring was only 1 minute in duration and 30 rounds. On a side note I am turning 50 and will be going to Japan in less than a week now. Testing for Ni Dan, I still enjoy the challenge. It does help that I am 6-3 and 250 pounds. I would like to give you kudos for not butchering my art. It shows your integrity and principle, your students are lucky to have you as their Sensei Osu! looking forward to part 3.

I trained in Kyokushin during the early 80's under Shihan Miura in Chicago. I still have a few indentations in my shins from the leg kicks :-) One thing omitted from the video; there is no distinction between rank during training. You might be a white belt with 2 months of training fighting a brown belt full contact night after night. Shihan Miura said "there are no white belts or black belts... only kyokushin fighters."

This might not be common practice in all of Kyokushin, but I have experienced it in 2 different dojos in 2 different countries, at regular periods the Sensei will talk to your parents and require to see your grades in school and if they are slipping you are not allowed to continue training. It might be widespread in many martial arts, I have only trained Kyokushin (from the traditional martial arts). I sure hope it is. The dojo is losing money by turning you down for bad grades, but they are creating a net benefit for society by encouraging you to be a well rounded citizen. Anyone else experienced this in their dojo?

    • @ArtofOneDojo

Actually yes, I have. In my early Kenpo days we were required to do well in school as well and show report cards and such. The instructor wanted to know what we were applying discipline outside of the school as well. My Second instructor would follow up with parents and teachers if he had a child in class that had behavior problems to make sure they were behaving outside the school. He had a funny story with one kid that was having issues in class and his Mom and Dad would tell the kid that "If you don't behave we'll let Mr. M know and he'll come over and want to know why".
Well one day he actually did have to drop something off at their house and when his parents opened the door and the kid saw him he freaked out and ran upstairs and hid. Apparently he behaved MUCH better after that LOL.

Harder, harder, harder. faster, faster, faster. Sparring was done nightly winner facing the next opponent. When all the students were done then the Sensei took over. It was life and death with the Marines subject to immediate deployment behind enemy lines. I never expected to come back alive, It was real not play. I started in 1969. Awesome job on the video, as always! I never practiced Kyokushin, but have great respect for the style. I was introduced to karate through a book written by Mas Oyama. Since you asked about viewers who experienced a black belt test, I'll leave a link to a video of my 1st dan test. In 1992, I earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan (Tang Soo Do). I began my training in 1987. It was a four hour test in 95 degree heat. As is the custom in a Korean style dojang, we wore red belts instead of brown. The video is only a 30 minute highlight reel. We had students up for 1st and 2nd dan. I'm the short guy, BTW. Haha! Sparing is near the end of the video. We kept it controlled, but spirited. Although, in my second fight, I damaged the ribs of my training partner. We were both really going for it. I wouldn't have known if he didn't tell me after the test. Watch for his hand to drop to protect his ribs. We had just recently adopted safety gear. In the early days we didn't even wear a cup. The quality is about what you'd expect from a 1980s Camcorder.

As a 5th Dan practitioner and instructor of Kyokushin for over 38 years (I was trained directly by Shoshu Shigeru Oyama in NYC and started training at 12yrs old in April,1982), I must correct you on one point in this video. The rank of Sensei in Kyokushin DOES NOT come automatically when 3rd & 4th Dan are achieved. You are still considered and addressed as Sempai. The Sensei title can only be given to you by the Branch Chief, which indicates that you are officially considered a teacher and may even open your own dojo at that point or stay at your current dojo and teach there. Other than that, great information and I appreciate that you respect Kyokushin in general and specifically in how you handled it in this video series. Osu!

    • @squatch570
      @squatch570 Před 4 lety +1

Update, the same protocol applies to Shihan and Hanshi (and all similar senior titles within the various offshoots) as well when 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Dan are achieved.
However, anyone likely to reach that level would have already been supporting the organization through teaching, seminars & tournament organizing & assistance (judging, etc) so they would likely be given the title of Shihan (5th & 6th Dan) or Hanshi (7th, 8th even 9th) anyway. It's more specifically to the title of Sensei at 3rd & 4th Dan typically (as I mentioned) where you remain "Sempai" until the Branch or Organization Chief gives you the title of Sensei, since that is usually when people are starting to teach regularly and become more autonomous. Although 1st & 2nd Dan often teach a lot too and of course as people make their way through the Kyu ranks they are already teaching and assisting their Kohai to a certain extent.
Regarding the different titles for the different offshoots for example, (in IKO1, 2, 3, 4) 5th/6th are Shihan Dai & Shihan & 7th is Hanshi but in World Oyama Karate, under the late Soshu Shigeru Oyama, 5th/6th are Shihan & 7th is Saiko Shihan. They all mean about the same thing in the same way that, Kaicho, Kancho, Soshu do for the head of their respective organization. As you already mentioned, the title of Sosai has been reserved only for Mas Oyama and as far as I'm aware in my 38+ years, no one has ever had the audacity to use that title who has any direct or indirect lineage to Kyokushin.
Regarding my rank and title at 5th Dan, I have respectfully backed off being involved directly with Kyokushin and World Oyama organizational structure several years ago and although I have been given a title of Shihan, I don't use it to refer to myself (as no one should, it's for others to address you) and I don't even wear a black belt with my rank, Kanji or Katakana name on it, I wear a plain black belt unless I actually attend an event on an official level, otherwise the plain one is my training belt. Since I stopped being directly involved, I no longer get promoted but I haven't cared about that for my entire life of training since my skill shows what my rank represents and I am well known enough in Kyokushin circles for people to acknowledge that.
Anyway, I appreciate the heart on my comment above and I apologize for getting into too much of the details of the title nuances of Kyokushin. I could actually expound on so many other areas of Kyokushin regarding the history, training syllabus, dojo and organization structure with all the offshoots and of course the loaded politics but that would be for a private message if you were more curious. I have knowledge right from the source being a direct and close student of Shoshu Oyama and have been around Sosai Oyama as well.
Osu to you and keep up the great work, training and positive attitude!!

Once again an excellent job, on chronicling the second part of the art of Kyokushin Karate Sensei Dan! You have done a formidably outstanding chronology, in both the first and second part.
I highly commend you for your summary, as well as a refreshing, re-telling of the introductory video, to remind in the minds of the audience, of the aspects previously covered. You also did a superb job, at pronouncing most of the Japanese terminology, considering you are not a Japanese language scholar, nor someone who practices Japanese martial arts, which make usage of such terminology.
Everything was presented in a clear, concise, well organised and also visually well presented fashion. If this were to be compared to an academic essay, you did what would be expected in such a situation, a great introduction chronicling what would be covered throughout the video, then each segment as if they were the paragraphs of an essay, you decisively detailed each component one by one, clearly and cohesively linking it to the next as well as the previous element. Lastly your revision of all the elements covered throughout the video, like the conclusion of the essay, your summed everything in a coherent and eloquent manner, yet again refreshing and reminding the viewers of everything that you presented in your video.
As a Kyokushin Karate practitioner, teacher and still a student myself, you have done a magnificent job, in honouring our style, the way it should be done so. I am looking forward to the next episode on Kyokushin Karate. Thank you immensely and sincerely, to you and your team Sensei Dan, for this great homage. I thought Jigoro Kano only introduced White, Brown, and Black belts. (Observing that the longer you train the dirtier your obi gets), and he adopted the Kyu/Dan system from Go. It was a judoka named Mikinosuke teaching in Paris in the thirties that introduced other colour belts. I was told in a Judo class once that he took the idea from swimming badges but I've never read that anywhere else. I may be mistaken and if so I'm sure someone will correct me here.
Or better yet maybe a video elaborating on the subject.

I think the training I went through in Kyokushin prepared me for SEAL training, I don't know if I could have made it through if I hadn't had Kyokushin. The belt rank colors were a bit different in the Radcliff Brothers school in Chesterfield Va. White, yellow, blue, green, purple, 3stages of brown, and finally Black. I will say it was well worth it. This was a really good one! I was always told he also adopted the shin kicks from Thai boxing as well. And it’s funny that you brought up the red thing. I just had this conversation with Seth Petruzelli former UFC/Bellator/k1 veteran. He is a third-degree black belt in shito-ryu... his particular sect uses The red belt as the second belt! Most Japanese/Okinawan Arts this is a masters belt... you are still referred to as a whatever degree black belt even when wearing the red belt or the coral belt. Whenever I see one of those belts I think of high-ranking black belt or even master! I certainly don’t believe it should be the second belt... 😂

Probably because of what happens with many arts...people branch off and teach their way and sometimes different organizations form and they want their way to be a little bit different. Switching belt colors is one way to do that and sometimes the material changes over time or gets influence from another system and ideas blend...belt color ranks might merge too.
