The Bikepacking Route to the Edge of the World - more reindeer than people

- Three years ago, I mapped a route out in the far Arctic north. You literally cycle the last roads in the Western world. And these are no ordinary roads. Wild reindeer, geological wonders, and a wind-swept environment that only the edge of the world can offer. The only problem is it's a long way to go and finding that excuse can be difficult. That is, until an unexpected opportunity presented itself in August 2023. This is the Arctic East 700 - the route thousands of people will cycle in 20 years.

This is unforgivable. We the native inhabitants of Finnmark and Troms has tried for years to keep the last secret of Norway hidden. Every time we hear people go to Lofoten and Vestlandet, Pulpit Rock, etc, we cheer for them. Normally people head south in Bjerkvik where the roundabout joins E10 and E6 after they've visited Lofoten. Out of 100 RV's only 5 goes further north. Most people wants to see Lofoten, and who can blame them. But the real beauty is the nature further north and especially the coastal regions. At least you didn't go to Havøysund that has the most beautiful coastal road stretch in Norway. Lofoten comes close, but only close. Could you make a new video where you tell people how bad it really was and that you got attacked by a moose and had food poisoning the whole time?

I wouldn’t worry, not many people consider Norway as a destination to go too. Looks amazing but so does Siberia and we wouldn’t go there either.
It's the absence of traffic that makes cycling so dreamy when home here in Northumberland, and I had that same out of body experience watching this film. Like the trance you slip into when staring out of a train window and time stands still. I just love getting lost in the majesty of Nature. Keep those films coming please.

Love cycling in Northumberland. Sadly it was over a year ago when I last passed though doing LEJOG. Hope to get there next year though.

I went there in August, it was simply incredible. Huge thanks to Matthew for the warning about the bad weather in Southern and Middle of Norway. There in the North it was like Caribbean Summer Feeling 😎☀️

the reason that all the cafes were busy in the town of vadso (in addition to the nice weather); pretty sure you were there in the beginning of the varangerfestivalen that lasted wednesday -sunday, most locals take out holiday days for that week. That's probably also why the plane tickets where expensive. A lot of bands + vadsø-expats travel to and from around that weekend (and the only close big airport is kkn).

I have been there but with motorbike about 12 years ago. It is absolutely fantastic. From Gothenburg in Sweden up to Namsos and from there I followed the coast, Lofoten, Tromsö, Nordkap, Kirkenes Jacobselv and also the Pasvik valley. Back south through northern Finland. Over 7000 km when I was back home again. I was lucka with the weather, almost No rain during the whole trip. I recommend these very northern parts of Scandinavia with midnight sun from May to August.

I've been to Kirkenes once, but never landed there. There was too much fog, so the plane was diverted to Lakselv airport, also known as BANAK, a military air base. Then 4 hours of bus the shortest way to Kirkenes, which just so happened to be through Finland. My group actually travelled that road to the border(in a mini bus) and into Russia for a day trip. Back then the Norwegian and Russian border control was colocated. Don't know if that's still the case.
From there it's a 20Km wide 'DMZ' into Russia. There's NO STOPPING on that stretch. If you do, armed Russian border guards will show up almost immediately, and ask if you have trouble. If you don't have, they'll be very happy to supply you with some.

's been a couple of years since I've been there. I also went to Grense Jacobselv(almost Russia), and bathed in the sea, I was asthounded that it was warmer than in Vesteraalen... 🤯

Great video. I drove to Vardø and Hamningberg two years ago and that area is really stunning. I didn't have that good luck with the weather like you, but I also saw the sun momentarily.

This was such a good video Matthew! One question though - were there midgies at that time of year? Scotland has them in abundance in the north in summer sadly.

Strava knows nothing 😉 We cycled the same route 15 years ago. It was quite different weather at that time. First we had to lean to the wind while cycling to keep ourselves up. The wind was horribly strong but luckily it was from the side and not from the front. After the boat weather turned worse and it was almost zero degrees and raining wet snow. The only good thing was that now the wind was behind us and we could cycle fast back to Finland 😁
I have experienced them conditions in Finnmarlk too. It's night or day based on the weather conditions

Who me? I'd say about 20km.
Day 1: 238km, Day 2: 160km, Day 3: 190 (Day 4 next video: 123km)

Very nice and inspiring video as usual. I hope to bike about in northern Norway some day as well. However, i think its messed up that you took an airplane up there. That kind of behavior is contributing greatly to the extreme weather we are experiencing, and will experience even more unfortunately. Going by train, or even better by bike, is fully possible. If you dont have the time to travel without destroying the world, then dont do it at all.
So no one goes to estern Finnmark as a tourist until they build railway. Unless they take the train to Bodø and peddle 1200km each way to Kirkenes
2400 kilometres isn't very far for a cyclist with some time. It can be done in around 15 days without going at it really hard. There is also a train station in Finland, 500 kilometres from Kirkenes. You can also walk, sail and more to there. With the time. This kind of tourism will benefit the local area more than tourism based in flying. Because when we travel slower we spend more time in the areas we travel in. Then we spend more money there. And as we spend more time somewhere we are more likely to create understanding and respect for the area. If climate change gets serious enough hardly no one will travel anywhere, because the weather will be too bad and resources will be too scarce. Global geo-political security will also be a highly limiting factor.

Strava sucks, it only shows a small fractions of riders who ride there! In total it may by 13 who there 😂😂😂! Can i plan a Route with the help of Cycle Norway, so i can make a unsuportet Trip with no or little mishaps like like Climbs over 25% or dangerous Tunnels?
And is it possible to make a Guided Group Ride of a few days in Norway from a Base Camp just for Sneak Peak?
Strava is by far the best app for cycling.

Well ... think like this, its always faster to go from north to south, its downhill all the way !!!! atleast when you look at the globe.
I can't stress it enough:DON'T make Russia angry. Be carefull not to cross the border! Living here in the North , we had some trouble with the Russians, also people crossing the border!
