- Thirteen-year-old Gwen Lynch is the only student in a one-room schoolhouse on Massachusetts' Cuttyhunk Island. Friends and family flocked to witness Cuttyhunk Elementary's last graduation ever. Here's Steve Hartman, "On the Road."

She's at the top of her class... And the bottom
xD
NCZIOOX 😂😂
She's in a class by herself!
She's also average
@John Kugelfischer the news should have used that one
Can you imagine her mother's face if she had come home one day saying she was being bullied at school?
Mal Mack
By the teacher?
by herself
Soo spooky
We all bully ourselves somedays
By her imaginary friend?
Calling in sick would be a off day for the teachers
Pitbull Clan Teacher*
Table chair lmfao right
I don't think a teacher could take the entire day off. There generally are duties an educator can't get done while instructing. Although, there are fewer papers to grade, fewer grades to record, less time to report an absence. What's left to do? There's always lesson plans to prepare, with materials to gather, development of evaluation criteria. Oh yeah, in a one room school, there's the chalkboard to clean, mop the floors all before nap time. What a crazy schedule to have! Time to retire.
Emotional day for both the Teacher and the Student n everyonethere.....Good luck to them.
Donna Woodford blah blah blah
No one is talking about the teacher who is now out of the best job ever- working one on one with a student! Seriously though, I hope she was able to find a good job elsewhere.
C Ewe I was thinking about this
Story of teacher's life in America.
She can teach online classes
She can be a tutor.
She likely didnt really even get paid from teaching one student. It was most likely just her being a great woman. So I imagine she'll be fine.
Hands up to the teacher.
For teaching this kid.
What an amazing
Dedicated woman
yeah somehow i think its easier than teaching a class of 40
That school must be the only school in America with a 100% graduation rate for 2019. Lol
Yooooo Facts hahaha
I own 2 houses there, she is my distant cousin, and my entire family has been there for 419 years now. :)
Actually my school had a 100% graduation rate a couple of years ago, but they send "problem" kids to a different school 😬
@@calciumpill Help I was just about to say the exact same thing 💀

That’s sad it was open since the 1800s and closing 😢
146 yrs :/
I know right! I love school
The island will get a new school. BET
Well, with a population of only 12 people, there probably aren't any students to attend school there.
*1900s
12 people on the island ?? Sounds like an introvert heaven to me 😂😂
yallknow whoiam - ya I’m planning on moving there in like 20 years
Pareidolia true there’s no way I could live without Publix fried chicken 😂
@@archive.brooke8621 count me in aswell👌😀
I’d love that
@@hoseoksleftkidney6652 What is that?
Oh she’s graduating middle school......I was confused why they said she’d be attending a high school on the mainland
Samantha Maria I don’t know if the guy messed up or not but he said elementary school.
@@CJ-mn6iw Some places have middle school and elementary school together
I'm the 1000th like - quite happy!
@@CJ-mn6iw Right I got so confused I thought it was high school and then he started saying elementary its just so weird
@veevyo yes. in some parts of the USA, K-8 is called “grade school” rather than the separate elementary and middle school (junior high). i happen to grow up in an area where elementary, middle, and high school was the norm. only later on in my life did i learn the weird words of grade school and junior high lol
This Young Girl, was Homeschooled by a Teacher, who was dedicated to her getting the best education, possible. Respect and gratitude to the Teacher, and congratulations to the Young Girl, who was blessed to have a great leader, and was an exceptional student. Respect and Honor to her Parents, for choosing not to leave the island.
💚🤍🖤💙
She is the valedictorian of her school!
also the last rank of the school
she is the valedictorian and yet her grades are only average
She’s 13? She looks 18 to me. Best wishes!
@Adrián Durán Why does it matter if it's not relevant?
@Adrián Durán it's only a thought. not everything in the comments has to be related to the video
@Adrián Durán Your comment is even less relevant, so there's that.
She looks 13, tall people can be 13 too lol.
It would be irrelevant (and creepy) if it was about her looks. But I honestly thought she was graduating high school and going to college until they said boarding school. Specially with how the ceremony was
So is the teacher unemployed now?
😭😭😭😭
no
Probably a private tutor
And here I was thinking that my graduating class of under 80 kids was small. 😂
Where do you live? In Iowa, USA, there are a lot of schools with 40 people or less
@@ericl8743 I grew up in a small town in California. :) I know there are smaller schools my own state as wel but all the nearest high schools are huge, so mine seemed tiny! Haha
@@workingchristianmom that's cool! I was just curious. I grew up near an Amish town (Kalona, Iowa) you so school life was kinda boring here. I always thought it would be cool to visit a bigger city. Have a lovely day!
Wow that’s crazy, I live in Georgia and my graduating class was 1,100
My graduating class was 64 students.
Looks like a beautiful place!
Yeah
Peacefull
Peaceful before the Native Americans got slaughtered for that land....
it is a beautiful little island. I have sailed and stayed many times over my life time.
Mike Artillery Sucks to such doesnt it
Its the best place in the world, you could visit there in the spring if you wanted, or summer
Wish her all the best in the future. She will have a unique story to tell to her peers at boarding school.
“Any friends from middle school”
“No.”
“Oh small class?”
“Yeah something like that”
At least she wasn't stressed about giving presentations
A paradise for introverts lol
i’d trade places with her in a heartbeat lmao
I just realized that, if she graduated in spring 2019, and started high school in fall 2019, that means that the pandemic cut her first year of school with other students short and now she's theoretically back on the island. Hope she's doing alright, must be such a bummer. :(
At least she wouldn't have to wear a mask?
Her HS reunion is going to be lit 🔥
She was graduating middle school. She's going to go to boarding high school on the coast.
LMAOOO this is my fav comment about me

My graduation class was so big we had to graduate at Texas Stadium when it was in Irving Texas.

My school graduates at an arena- there are 5,000 students yikes-
Small class size but big graduation! CBS was there and they weren't even there for mine! 😜 She may not see it now but she did have an idyllic sheltered childhood with her parents and far away from the craziness of other bigger public schools. She will do just fine! 😊
She seems happy and kind. She is so lucky to have partially grown up away from the cruelty of other kids. Wishing her all the best at high school. 💞
She'll look back and be so grateful for the childhood she's had. So wonderful 💖
I wish she ended it like Elle woods... "congratulations class of 2019... I DID IT!!"
@Zachary Khan She lives on an island, not somewhere in a third-world country.
@Zachary Khan Not all of them. I don't understand why you'd assumed she wouldn't have TV or cable just because she lives on a tiny island.
@Alessia N That's still a stupid argument. The beauty of DVDs, cable, and the Internet is that you can watch a lot of stuff that came out before you were born. Movies don't just disappear from existence after they were made.
@Alessia N What do you mean why would she watch a movie from 2001? Legally Blonde is an iconic movie.
I would live there in a Heartbeat!
PROBLEM, not enough houses and is 100% cold in the winter
@@kingcrab5631 I hate summer and love the cold
@@shawnbeckmann1847 there is no snow, and no heaters, but the summer is great, except for the boaters who trash the beach, sometimes.

What a sweet girl! Wishing her the best of luck in high school! 💙
I lost track of how many times that reporter interrupted her. Jesus dude, chill
so i guess playing hookey isn’t that easy :/
She looks older than 13, until they said her age, I thought she was 17ish
I thought that, too.
I love hearing about unique and interesting stories like this one.
The view of this island is beautiful! The funny thing is... I have lived very close to this island and have never taken the ferry over. Maybe this year! God bless her in the days ahead. God bless her parents, family and teacher.
Peace, Lynne
Hope you come soon
@@kingcrab5631 Hi jake! Thank you. I wasn't able to go this Summer. We stayed home most of the time due to virus concerns. I'm sure it's a lovely place to visit or stay. May God bless you.

her college essay would be amazing. she could get into harvard for sure. all her stories and top of her class haha
i live in massachusetts and i’ve never heard of this island... WHAT
HOW???!!!
Me too girl and I have never of heard of this place either.
I got 3 students that would love to be there.
Congratulations sweetie. Continue to soar
Congratulations on your graduation day!!
One advice for her, be careful in high school there's a lot of cruel and maniac students there, especially the naughty boys. A lot of cruel people out there.
Yeah she’ll wish she was back. Poor child. Befriend the good people! Don’t associate yourself with bad people.
@HazyDay
I agree that everyone should deal with the real world but she's just too young to face it yet.
That's a terrible life. I'm so sorry.
Its a great life actually, until it turns winter but...
I’m an introvert so honestly having such a small school and being like the only student sounds perfect to me
Gwen was raised humble.....Kudos to her Parents, Her Teacher AND to Gwen herself!
And here I am with my class of nearly 500
I imagine that’s the shortest version of “Pomp and Circumstance”: bomp bomp-bomp bomp bom-
Principal: “sit down”
Ummmm. What if someone there has another kid. There are literally no other kids there?
Boxer Mom / Didn’t they say the population was only like.. 12v
i also imagine most of the ppl living there are older and already have had as many kids as they're going to
Other parents who'd rather not let their kids go to that school, probably.
I stay there all my summers
Aw, she sounds like a sweet girl! Hope she has a great time at boarding school.
Wow- what an incredibly beautiful place!! I wish her all the best!
Thank you for posting very heartwarming.
her parents kept their attractiveness with their age and the child surprisingly doesn’t seem socially awkward or shy.
Congrats!!! Well done!!! 🇵🇭
So I guess that makes her Valendictorian!🤷🏻♀️
This is such a cool event. The village really attend the ceremonies to see the final moments of the school.
That island is what summer dreams are made of 😍 so peaceful!
Feel sorry for the teacher. Hope she has another job.
In 2019...not even in Swaziland in Africa..where I live.....truly this is on the road
I don't know why this made me cry
Flap your wings little Gwen. There's a whole world waiting for you. We hope that's just the beginning of a life full of adventure and emotions. Good luck.
She ran track and came second in her school. Well done!♥️
I can't imagine how lonely and boring it could have been not only going to school, but living here without any friends.
I went to a one room school too! Maybe six to eight kids. The teacher would babysit us when my parents needed to go somewhere.
I want to live there. So peaceful
Yes i play all the parts! The whole island is mine and the school too! quarantine is depressing, i cant wait to go to a bigger school with lots of people!
What an awesome place to grow up! I was moved from my hometown, to the city at age 6. I hated every year of it! After graduation, I moved back to my small hometown & I've been here ever since (over 35 yrs ago)!
She's so sweet, lots of luck to her in her high school
I just notice that I’ve been admiring a 13 year old.
She is going to have so much fun but will also run into a lot of situations she may not be used to. I wish her the best! And how beautiful is that little island?! I could handle living there.
That’s pretty cool but strange lol. She seems super positive and like an amazing girl. Congrats on your degree.
How unfortunate to look forward to seeing more people the year right before quarantine
“so it was pretty empty in there” 😂
Very nicely done piece. Nice young lady!
aw cuttyhunk, it’s a super sweet island! I went in that school house without realizing that it was still in use haha
I could so live there
Look how the parents are "Cheezing" lmao 😂😂🤣😂 like Look at my baby 🤣 and the dad's tears took me out 🤣😂😉😅
Looks like the type of place where a horror movie would take place
No it is not all, it is the best place in the world, look it up.
or a SyFy series
i am mind blown, i can’t believe there was a school like this.
Looks amazing to me. I hope this young lady gets to enjoy a fabulous school experience at boarding school.
What a blessed young lady!
Watching this video in 2021. I just thought about how this girl might have had to move back home or remote school because of COVID. As someone who is seeing first hand the effects isolation has had in high schoolers, my heart breaks for her if she is in this situation.
@Bryce Costa that’s amazing!!!! Thank you for the update! I am wishing you both the best during this time and in your future.
She is not ready for the cruel cruel world. I wish her the best.
Yes I agree. She's totally not really for the cruel world yet there's a lot of fucktards in high school.
She's seems very confident and self assured. I think she'll be okay out there
Awww... The last of an era.
WoW
Great Story!
Thank You Steve
GREAT STORY. This is what we need on CZcams not trash. Good luck kid..
i go here every year! never thought there was only 1 student
Ya that girl has no idea how beautiful her childhood was
I went to a small school too (big compared to this one though) where in my final two years there were only 30 girls (all girls school) in my yeargroup when we'd started five years earlier with 50. However I got to know my teachers very well and we had incredible bonds and with it being boarding school the other girls became like my sisters. In my final year I had three classes, in two of them there was only one other student (same student in both classes and teachers always said we acted and fought like an old married couple) and the other I was the only student. My graduating class went through a lot together and saying goodbye was an extremely emotional day for everyone both staff and students because some of us including me having been there from the age of 11 but there were some who'd been there since the age of four
Aw, this makes me so sad. This seems like such nice little island to live on.
Coming from small town USA, that place sounds like paradise
I'm from a similar place. Kelley's Island, Ohio has a population of 200 people, and my school has like 15 kids.
It was kind of heartwarming until I realized she graduated in 2019. Who knows if her boarding school is even in person right now.
Wow shout out to the teacher.
Why? She's been living the high life for years.
Watching this during a pandemic, I can't help but feel bad because she would have finally got to go to school with other kids and now schools with other kids are dangerous.
Homes on that island go from a low of $540k for a tiny 2bd/1ba built 100+ years ago, to $2.4 million for a newer 2800 sq ft 3bd/3ba
I tried leaving the south since I was 8. She'll do it and thrive!
(Yes, I left 8 years ago and I could never go back after seeing what else is in the world)
J Dub same here 👍🏻
This is a beautiful story
This would make an amazing tv show.
She is head cheerleader , Captain of the football team, and head coach
PROPS TO THE TEACHER as well 😊👍🏾👍🏾
I would be glad if I were to be in a class with her. She seems to be sweet and a happy gal!
She has such a neat story and this is so unique! Congratulations
I really love this reporter
Sad to say this next chapter in her life is going to be called innocence lost.
