    After the cleaning, there are several more steps that should be done. Use an ozone generator. Drill holes a few inches wide into the walls and pipe it in(you can cover the holes later with dry wall patching). Also use it in the attic. Then use special primers(Zinsser odor killing primer), and add to that Zorbex(it's an odor killing liquid additive). Next latex house paint(semi gloss, not flat or satin). Again, add the Zorbex. These extra steps take more time/money but are worth it. And finally, if it's a house you're buying, replace ALL the A/C duct work.

    We had an extreme pet damage issue in one of our apartments that required removal of all the carpets and pads as well as airing the place for months. We couldn't get rid of the cat urine smell after using several bottles of pet urine smell remover on the remaining floor boards. So the carpet people recommended putting down a thick layer of baking soda over them, then the thickest, densest carpet padding one could find, then a tightly woven carpet. Absolutely amazing the smell completely disappeared. Only time I smell anything is when I shampoo the carpet, there is a mild bathroom smell that disappears when the carpet dries. Baking soda is amazing stuff.

    As far as I can see there was very little improvement here. The color of walls are not as important than the smell. You can paint a wall but you can't paint a smell. What about the floors the inside of cabinets, behind molding . That house was so bad that there had to be smoke that penetrated the wall surface. Sheet rock is like a sponge. You can't wipe the inside or middle of it down. The only way to get that smell out of that awful mess in to tear it down and start over. Even then the frame might be useless as well. In that case totally demolish it. If anyone out there wants to flip properly like that walk away from that mess. The cost to turn this place around would bankrupt you.

    People, people, people! If you don't clean your tar coated walls BEFORE putting a new layer of paint on them, you are wasting your money! The tar will seep through your paint with ugly yellow streaks or patches in matter of weeks depending on how humid the inside of the house gets. Always always start with as clean of a new canvas as you can before painting! It's common sense! Covering up the problem does not fix the problem!

    I live in a 4-plex building (two on top/two below). I live on top, caddy corner from a heavy-duty smoker below. We have been neighbors for a decade. He's a recent widower whose late-wife also smoked heavily. I'm concerned because he never opens his windows, except his front door. It's so bad that his curtains are stained brown. I noticed after his wife died, the stench has improved a little, but I'm concerned about third hand exposure in our building. The landlord refuses to do anything. I'm not saying he should be evicted, but I'm kinda hoping she'll get him to air out his unit, deep clean it and/or at least provide him an air purifier.

    This is exactly the one thing most of the people will never get. They are so concerned of the smell itself without realizing that smell, smokes etc are tiny particles that emit the odor. Each and every action has consequences to it. You don't wash your hands and soon the parts of the walls, doors etc get covered in dirt. It's basic physics and chemistry yet we still are concerned about wrong things.

    Little advice for nicotine, before you do the deo, use a bissel steam shot on the walls, you will save so much time and product and its chemical free, kills bacteria and all you need is water. This is advice from a girl who lives with a dad who smoked my entire life and I clean the house.

  • @markwalker3499
    @markwalker3499 Před 2 lety +2

    It is a hovel anyway that still needed new drywall after they were done. My experience has been that if there is some damage from smoke you pretty much have to do this level of cleaning then prime before painting, but the walls in this vid were not worth salvaging to start with. And you will note that the walls depicted were painted with a glossy paint, had they been semi gloss or flat all you would do by trying to clean it like this is make a big mess, and they are far more permeable so the damage would go a lot deeper. I am a smoker who never smoked in my house till I had to have a massive bypass surgery and have smoked for about a month in the corner of the living room, I shudder at the thought of the smell. The whole 38X26 room will have to be cleaned, primed, and repainted soon. I wanted a new color anyway, but the point is with 18 foot open beam ceilings it is going to be done by a professional at pretty high cost, and there just is no way around that.

    My husband found a place for 650 for rent. He said the person who lived there smokes, but she only smoked outside. So when it was ready to move in he said it smelled of strong bleach. When I went in there I couldn't even smell any bleach it was just pure cigarette smell. I couldn't blame my husband though since he use to be a smoker. Now I'm trying to get rid of the smell. I'm going to have to order a ozone generator. Seriously, people renting out places if you have people smoking inside or even "outside" and not within their apartment that smell still gets stuck to their clothes. So either way that c**p is going to stink up the place. What they need to do is post up and just let people now that smokers lived in that place and only smokers can rent that place out. Only if non smokers are willing to put up with the smell will it be ok to rent to them because it's ridiculous that other people who don't smoke have to figure out ways on how to get rid of the smell. It's gross

    I used to paint over the summers. Although it isn’t my main job cleaning is part of the process. If a room smelled excessively bad like smoke or whatever. We’d just bleach rags and cover the walls and ceiling , then mop the ground. Repaint every surface. Throw in an ozone machine for 2 hours and let it air out. Took way less than 23.5h and the walls looked better as it’s fresh paint. Food for thought.

      To all the folks saying it isn’t clean, or they did a bad job, etc…. Have you ever attempted something like this? I have. They did a GREAT job! The stains will never come out. Walls need to be cleaned thoroughly like this, usually with TSP then vinegar. Then do a primer with oil based Kilz or a similar product. Then you can take the next steps… re-texture and paint or whatever. Every surface in the house will need cleaned or replaced. It’s a tough job.
