Giant Cuttlefish Attack SCUBA diver

  • Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) attack on female dive buddy. Cuttlefish breed and lay their eggs around this time of year - and become very aggressive and "frisky". They are very intelligent and are attracted to "shiny" things such as this torch, and especially anything that is yellow in colour.
I motioned to her to switch the torch off, unfortunately she didn't understand and this footage is the result. This is the first time this diver had ever seen a cuttlefish. This cuttlefish followed us for another 20 minutes.

Incidentally, based off my encounter (which lasted some 10-15 minutes), when a cuttlefish goes all white, it either means "Danger!" or "More stupid humans coming" (or possibly both). Spotting two newly arrived divers, a cuttlefish up near the top of the reef I was diving went all white and a second or so later, so did the one hovering a meter in front of me. Alien language.

The Great White asked if I could draw your attention for just a moment. But as usual, he saw some hippie skinny dipping and got distracted.

It was chasing the diver's flashlight. That's also how Octopus and Squid fishing works, with big light sources by night.

If a cuttlefish bit you, I would imagine it would hurt - their beak is very strong and sharp - these guys bite straight through crab shells. As I have said in my comments, this diver had never seen a cuttlefish before and it would have been very intimidating for her - I suspect a lot of people would do the same. Plus ever tried to kick something underwater with fins on - would never have collected.

Humans: Conquer the entire planet with massive brains, build massive cities, become overlords of the entire world with the ability to wipe out entire species. Also go to space, something no other organism on the planet has ever done.
Also humans: Gets chased around by a little cuttle-y boi who only lives 1-2 years. Sounds about right.

If you look at the hand thats holding the flashlight, you could see that she knew that the cuttlefish was attracted to the light. she kept on blocking the light and the cuttlefish would stop and then she would show the cuttlefish the light again.
