I am Brazilian. Ramon Dekker was the only man who made me cry after Ayrton Senna's death, the humility of these athletes is superior, the world needs more sportsmen like that.
I think most people just don't realize how exceptional Ramon really is. When he was fighting in Thailand, the country was not exactly welcoming to foreign fighters. In his early fights, he had to face obviously partial judges, crowd mocking, etc. There are even reports that in a couple of early fights he wasn't even given a private room to change clothes. Now think for a minute what that does to your head and that you have to overcome it and beat the hell of the guy in front of you. Legend.

Ramon got me to switch disciplines around 12 or 13 years old. From karate and boxing into muay thai.. in early 90s before mma was a trendy thing. 99% of people have never heard of him, but he was my favorite fighter, and I tried to mimic his style from head to toe. RIP RAMON🙏

Most people overlook the serious conditioning from early age on, one thing they took from Thai training. Good defense, and at the same time willing and able to take hits in order to counter. Ramon Dekkers, Bas Rutten, Ernesto Hoost, Peter Aerts, Nieky Holtzken. They all had the same drive and heart, for me the greatest examples of the Dutch school.

In those days they fought 5*3 minutes with elbows and knees in the clinch. That seperates the boys from the men. Three rounds in you are jacked up and you have 6 more minutes of WAR. Ramon was my hero growing up.
Whenever I see Ramon Dekkers fight, I get shivers down my spine. Just like when I watch fightscenes of Bruce Lee. The same power, speed, accuracy and energy. One of the greatest Dutch fighters. By the way, Rob Kaman also fought in Thailand, even earlier than Ramon Dekkers did. Another great Dutch fighter. Fact: Bruce Lee was part Dutch by the way.
