- Tutorial for Primitive Folk Art Dolls. How I made this Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam is a representative of the United States whose predecessor was a character named Brother Jonathan. He first appeared in the 1820s and we have embraced him in colonial nostalgia. He can be displayed year round in colonial decor and that is why he is such a valuable investment. He is carefully handcrafted and stained with natural materials. His bottom is filled with buckwheat to assist him sitting. His thread work on his trousers is carefully hand painted red ticking to keep his appearance home made. Flattened cotton for a General's coverlet adorns his whimsical rag scrap tucked muslin. Local harvested wool dons his chin and hair. He is featured upon a repurposed wood shed settle. Aged in black walnut and sanded purposefully to share the look of time worn edges. He can be purchased with or without the repurposed settle. 19 inches from base to gentlemen's hat.
