This documentary tells the story of the downfall of the world's most powerful Spanish Armada, and the rise of the Great British empire. In the 16th century, the Spanish Armada was known as the invincible fleet. However, it suffered a huge defeat in 1588 in its attempted invasion of England. This documentary explores how the invincible fleet had become so weak in 17 short years and how the small nation of England was able to prevail over the Spanish empire.
Rise of Great Powers' is an odyssey across time and space, going from ancient Rome to America in the 20th century. It is the fruit of two years of labor which traces the great powers’ rise to glory. The world’s leading academics reveal the 'X factor' that these nations had and others didn’t. This historical quest ultimately addresses the universal question - “What is it that makes a nation, community or organization powerful?”

One of Queen Elizabeth’s great achievements was the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
In the 16th century, the Spanish Armada was known as the invincible fleet. However, it suffered a massive defeat in 1588 in its attempted invasion of England. Yeah...but no, if the Spanish armada got destroyed at Calais, why was there a battle at Duinkerken? Why did the Dutch fought them 3 times after that and the remainder of the fleet had to sail around Scotland to strand in Ireland?? Sorry but this documentary wasn't really accurate!

All together the Dutch took 3 whole silver fleets from the Spanish loaded with silver from Peru. About the Spanish armada, 30 ships where destroyed by the Dutch before they reached English waters.
The conquering of Gibraltar, English/ Dutch undertaking. The Dutch got payed the Englisch got territory. The race build ships where by Dutch design called a spiegelship, yacht, fluit, schooner depending on it's size and arrangements. The European just took turns in their rise to be the bearers of the most successful civilization up to this day.
    First the Spanish and Portuguese
Then the Dutch and English and the French and at some extent later on the German.
    They all made it possible.
From the poor peasants at the time that China India and the Eastern Roman Empire were the richest in the world. Later to become the rulers of the world.

The spiritual side has been neglected. The Spanish did cut their cables indeed but this was also due to the increasing Westerly gale. Drakes attack only removed a few of the three hundred odd ships but the storm drove the Armada up the North sea over the top of Scotland and down both sides of Ireland and only about 27 ships returned to Spain. You did not mention the large number of Dominican Friars on board either to carry out the Papal commission of the Holy Inquisition. Queen Elizabeth, having called the nation to humble prayer before God for deliverance had a painting made stating "God blew with his winds and they were scattered" you should have added these facts to your history.

Lack of and the cost of copper led to the development of iron cannons. It is an interesting link to today's welfare state in the Western world. Distress teaches naked woman to spin.

They didn't "capture slaves in Africa." What the Hell did happen. The slaves that were "Captured' in Africa were captured by the so called African Kings, more aptly 'warlords' who operated along the coastline of Africa. The warlords made war upon the inland tribes with the express purpose of capturing the natives of the inland tribes bringing them as captives to the coast, and selling, trading them for anything from the Spanish, later the Dutch, Portuguese etc. The primary trade goods for the captives were weapons of any kind that were more effective than the crude weapons of the inland tribes. Nothing presented as history today is objective fact, the main thing is that it pass the political correctness test..

Yes, they were captured. By the invaders, by war lords, unscrupulous dealers etc. You’re just using semantics here which isn’t the point at all.

Because spain never existed until 1812 when it was proclaimed for the first time , as before all monarchs went with the titles of the kingdoms that were under their protection, not rule.
Also, spanish it is NOT a sole language! Check the map of domingos teixeira in 1573 and check the fçags shown there, spanish empire is a myth and it only existed in manipulated books
