- Sarah, a runaway teenager in the city of Metropolis, encounters a persistent newspaper reporter named Clark Kent who won't leave her alone until she agrees to an interview for his newspaper column. Ten questions -- that's all he asks. In their moments together, the fragments of her tragic life emerge, but her anger towards superheroes and Superman himself explodes in full force. If he is so great and so powerful, why is the world such a horrible place? Why doesn't he do something about it?

Anyone who doesn't like Superman because he's "lame" needs to see THIS movie.
Those people are fucking morons
You got that right bobsheaux love your vids
Yes, this film shows a glorious understanding of Superman's power, unmatched in film other than the works of Richard Donner and Bruce Timm.
"I was never not looking."
"Weren't you, or could you just not see?"
That double meaning, though.
Throughout the interview, Clark keeps telling "Sarah" that he's Superman ("I'm right here", for another example) but she doesn't understand because she doesn't believe that Superman is real. And note that her main reason for not believing in Superman is that she can't conceive of "someone who goes around saving people" - "People don't fly" is a less-important reason.
Agreed, so many things said that could be taken two ways, both correct, but with that underlying secret. "It doesn't take X-ray vision...".
So so deep
What's the meaning?
What a lot of people hate about Superman is the fact that he is such a powerful character, thus making it difficult to craft stories for him. I think current and future writers need to draw inspiration from this fan film; maybe they'd remember that even though he isn't from Earth, his heart is just as human as any other.
marcus thatcher His stories are this way, though. Constantly.
@@dannymac939 Too bad his modern films aren’t.
@Johnny Jacksted I agree and disagree. Man of Steel kind of got the hint, but they didn't go far enough.

That why I love the Lois & Superman show.
This is without a doubt the best version of Clark Kent I have ever seen on film. Damn good job.
I second that.
His voice does not fit Superman/Clark Kent
@@comebackguy8892 How his voice suppose to sound like?
@@p.s.csdeaky8530 deeper and more masculine. Henry Caville pretty much nails the Clark Kent voice.
@@comebackguy8892 Doesn't have to be exactly like another actor's portrayal of the same character, it's because your used to it, Christopher Reeve didn't have a low stereotypical "masculine" voice, he was more "I'm your friendly neighborhood Superman", but everyone has their different favorite version.
This short film does a great job representing Clark Kent and Superman.

Despite being a lifelong Superman fan (one who walked out of "Man of Steel" after THAT scene) I have just now discovered this - thanks Tvtropes!
My very favorite thing is that Clark never wastes time defending Superman. That would have been such an easy trap to fall into as a writer. But he approaches this conversation without ego, and he realizes that she's speaking from her pain, so instead of sticking up for himself he addresses her pain. I love that SO much. He is humble, patient, confident, and empathetic all at once, and that's what elevates this to *great.*
Thank you for putting this out in the world.
I’m so glad you liked it! I should check out TVtropes.
We ultimately had to cut OUR tornado scene because it just wasn’t in the budget ;)
This takes "We got Superman at home" to such a wholesome and cutting level.
Superman is a naturally good person. He cares. He's so good he inspires people and gives them Hope.
Superman is the best and brightest of us all. He is your buddy, your friend, or, at least, the one you always wanted. I wish I was half the man Superman is.
Yes he is! Fun Fact: I wrote and shot the film before the New 52 began, so several lines cut from the final film mentioned Clark's marriage to Lois. The wedding ring is the only thing left over from this sidebar.
Sometimes it takes Clark Kent to be a superman. Superheroes are like us minus the super powers. This was so well made. So emotional. Thank you, Mr. Thomas. You are a true Superman fan. You understand him.

Superman is a simple person who just wants to help people. He see himself as an equal and treats people the way he wants to be treated with respect. It's his warm heart of Understanding and empathy that wins over me He is more mindful and kind.
Superman might be Overpowered but he knows how to control his powers and respect it.
Couldn’t agree with you more. I think what really made him such an influential character is comic book pop storytelling was not so much his powers but his choice to use them for the good of others. It’s supreme meekness.
@@JakeThomasMakesMoviesI think that's one of the things that pisses Lex Luthor off even more, if he were to see Superman, an alien with godlike powers work a simple 9 to 5 job, he would feel some type of way, where as he as a human wants godlike abilities to rule.
John Byrne addressed this in a brilliant plot twist when he wrote the comic book reboot Man of Steel back in the 1980s. Luthor used computer software to analyze Superman’s connection to Clark Kent. When the computer deduced that Superman was Kent, he destroyed the computer because he thought it was faulty. He insisted that no super-powered being would demean themself so low as to live a normal life. This was a great update on the question “Why does no one recognize Superman with glasses?” and maintaining the secret identity, and also revealed Luthor’s own weakness - his “kryptonite” - is privilege, pride, and projecting those attributes onto others.
This dude is like a merge of Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill. Would have loved to have seen a scene with Superman. But beautiful piece, catches the essence of Superman just right.
How did you take a character I'm not that fond of, and make me want to see more of him? A 11 minute fanfilm, with no action, just dialogue and characters, made me like superman more than a high budget movie did.
Because, this was a simple true to the character film, this was a well written script, well shot, and well acted, and it made me understand these characters. While BvS just sets up future DC films.

The moment I saw the All-Star inspiration, I was sold. The world needs more of these kinds of Superman stories. Bravo, my lad.
This is why I love Superman, stuff like this. his powers don't mean much (although they are pretty damn awesome) but it is who he is - THE Hero - that matters. I loved Man of Steel and I am looking forward to the next few films but those movies have a much darker and serious tone that things like this would never fit in them. I am really glad you made this, thank you!
His powers, at the end of the day, are just tools he uses to help save the day, or, from time to time, getting a kitten out of a tree.
When I'm feeling low, and like I've lost hope, I come back here to recharge my faith in Superman; so here I am on my tri-monthly visit, again, letting myself believe again. Hope you're all safe and well, and.... thanks, Clark. x
That means so much to me. I know what you mean, because I’ve got my own entertainment that I return to just to feel better and restored.
I love how intimate this story is. It's the reason I didn't like MoS. What makes the BEST Superman stories are the ones that are Character-Driven. MoS had none and was just action-nuts and as some call it, disaster-porn. Thank you for understanding the character and bringing forth this poignant tale.
are you serious???? The first two thirds of Man Of Steel is ALL character development. how about the scene in the diner? the earlier scene with Jonathan and young Clark after he saved the bus? there are a lot of scenes that you're ignoring because the last third is a lot of action. even then, look at the emotional content of the last few scenes... Zod's anguish and Clark wailing openly about the death at his own hand.
I love MOS and think it is the best Superman film ever made. I can't even watch the comedy that is the Donner film.

Gene Hackman as Luthor?? C'mon... almost every bit of his dialogue is meant to be funny. The character of Otis??? The military commander (Larry Hagman) giving mouth to mouth to Miss Teschmacher (Vallerie Perrine) which is really a 'make-out assault' if you think about it. I mean she was feigning unconsciousness.
yeah.... I'm sure it was a comedy. everything that happens after he puts the suit on has some kind of laugh every couple of minutes.
Criminally underrated. From a long time fan of "Big Blue Boyscout" Thank You! I still believe a man can fly
That’s high praise! Thank you.
I first watched this a few years ago and can't help but come back to it. For me personally when it comes to fan made productions of Superman this is by far my favourite. No overcomplicated dialogue, multitudes of filming locations or even vfx. Just a pure heart to heart conversation with somebody who's struggling and needs that little extra bit of hope and that's Superman.
Amazing writing Jake!
Such a beautiful and touching film! I'm sure there are dozens of interpretations, but I was reminded of Jesus' encounter with a woman in Sychar (Jn 4). The way Clark compassionately instilled faith in "Sarah" by listening well made me think of how Jesus gently showed people the way to himself.
Not trying to impose my beliefs or anything; just wanted to share my takeaways. Like I said, there are dozens of meanings, and none are wrong. This just happens to be the lens I saw the film through.
the film was recruited into several faith based film festivals so you're not the only one that made that connection.
It's amazing how in 10 minutes you get Superman more correct than WB and DC could in 5 hours of MoS and BvS! Kudos for remembering that Supes is best when he is being one of us - a human. His birthplace may be Krypton but he'd say he's from Kansas. You nailed it! Very well done to all involved!
Kevin Pauley only counter to the MOS and BVS complaints is just that he's becoming Superman. Learning to accept himself and his place on Earth
I like that the last question was him actually asking as superman "what can I do" he didn't tell her he was superman but he was asking her as superman what he could do to help
This guy is the perfect Clark Kent. Nobody would ever think this absolute dork is Superman
If you removed the Superman element from this story, it still works. It's still a good story, just as Clark is a good man even without the suit. That's what DC keeps missing. It's shot well, Mr. Nagle looks the part and plays it well...I wish Warner Brothers would give this heart to the feature film treatments. Hope is such a powerful thing. It's a shame Hollywood seems to feel it's not needed in the superhero genre. I get that a movie with this premise wouldn't sell billions of dollars of tickets. The economics of film are pretty simple- if it doesn't require translation, ie explosions, it opens up more doors to audiences. But that doesn't mean the feeling of this couldn't be interwoven into a larger story. Bravo guys. I'll be showing this off to my film classes tomorrow.

Her complaints are literally the struggle Superman is dealing with in BVS. Mankind DOESN'T accept him for who he is, because they think he should be able to fix all their issues, blaming him for not being there when something happens he could have stopped. People don't believe in superman because of this, just like she didn't. Seeing all of the superman stuff and their thematic ties is really cool. Mr. Thomas did a fantastic job on this piece.
Every time I watch this film I seem to find another layer of subtlety to it, the details in the acting or in the script. "Her complaints..." She lost her parents at the age of 2, raised in foster home(s); so he can identify with her, sympathize with what she's going through, and contrast it with the caring both his natural and adoptive parents gave him. No wonder he uses his abilities to show her a little trick, coming almost to the point of just stating that he's Superman. But by doing that he gets her to change her outlook; if she was just talking with Superman, maybe she was wrong about how hopeless her life had become. Someone cares.
Please don't bring BVS into this.
@@mr.comicbook7648 why?
I think what many people should realise that when writing Superman, the most important element of his character to get right is Clark Kent. This kind, mild-mannered and humble man who saves the world simply because it's the right thing to do. Superman has the cool powers and the inspiring moments but it's Clark Kent that is at the heart of it. If Batman is Bruce Wayne's true identity then Clark Kent is Superman's true identity.
This fan film gets this element right and then some.
Best Superman film ever

A truly excellent fan film and a good example of compassion and empathy, encouraging others to progress through their issues.
This made me smile, this is why we love superheros. Not because of their powers but because of who they are, Clark Kent doesn't need super powers to be a hero. Great film👍
Speechless. Don't ever compare this. This flies by itself.
I'm only discovering this now, and I haven't seen something that so perfectly understood Superman since Superman vs the Elite. Simply masterful.
We need more superman movies like this. This was brilliant. It's more of a Clark Kent film than a Superman one! Well done guys :)
My favorite version of Clark Kent was Christopher Reeve's, of course, and he played it for comedy. If a "straight" version is going to be done, this is perfect. Thanks. What's most impressive is that he doesn't have to step into a phone booth to make his point. Good stuff. Both actors are excellent.
I would slightly disagree with your opinion on Christopher Reeve playing it for comedy. I think his Superman films were a product of the time they were made, and mixed comedy and drama. They were larger than life, more over the top comic book styled, especially Superman 3 and 4. Superman Returns was more an attempt to return to the first two in style and content; it wasn't a blockbuster but I certainly enjoyed it.
This short film, "one on one", does such an excellent job of getting us into the characters, in part because it is short. It uses subtlety instead of special effects, with the characters words being said but carrying layers of meaning behind them.
I felt so hype when he asked that final question. Not as Superman, but as Clark.

Do you think Superman VS Batman is going to be good? I was a bit wary when I first saw it.
This is the best Superman and DC fan film ever made. Congratulations on crafting a perfect distillation of a character - a beautifully human film that captures what Clark is all about. I love that there's no action because there just doesn't need to be. Instead of going the route so many other fan films do and trying to include fake-looking special effects and clumsily choreographed fight sequences, you took a more mature route, correctly observing that two characters simply sitting down and talking with one another makes for some of the most compelling story-telling in cinema. Jake, I'm sure you're well aware that you chose a structure that was more difficult to write, but I want you to know that you did so successfully with flying colours. Your actress Erin Brown and actor John Nagel both did phenominal work as well, truly capturing the essence of each character through their body language and line delivery. Each gave their character a convincing sense of depth and verisimilitude despite only having a few minutes of dialogue. It makes me really proud to be a Superman fan when I see films like this. An awesome, absolutely fantastic job to everyone who worked on this project. Certainly a 10/10, and I hope to see more of your guys' work in the future. Love it.
Thank you, James! I want to tell Erin and John what you said about their performances. They'll love to hear it. Yeah, I think Superman's compassion and kindness tend to set him apart from other heroes. The stories that show that side of him resonate with me. What are some of your favorite comic books stories? I think my favorite Superman comic is still "For All Seasons." I really like the theme of "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" which they turned into "Superman vs. The Elite," which just might be the best Superman feature.
@@JakeThomasMakesMovies Hey Jake, thanks for the response! "For All Seasons" is truly an amazing story, and "Superman vs The Elite" is definitely one of my favourites as well! If I had to pick an absolutely favourite story, it's "American Alien" from 2015! While the book does have some cool action scenes, most of it really explores how Clark developed his sense of compassion, love, and kindness from the Kents and other people throughout his childhood and early adult life! A lot of those stories, like getting into trouble with your friends in a small rural town, or moving to a big city where you feel kind of lost and uncertain, are things I can relate to really well because of my background!

Although the DCEU had potential, Zack Snyder missed the point of Superman and only focused on the “super”. According to him, making Superman the “lovable boyscout” is “one dimensional”. Instead of giving him a character driven arc, he just makes him Vegeta with a Jesus background and were supposed to root for him against Batman. There was no dynamic. Luckily, the DCEU is most likely concluding after ‘The Flash’ (2022) because it is meant to reset the DCEU. Hopefully after, we could see Superman being portrayed the way he was supposed to be.

Tbh, I will only watch it to see how it differentiates from the 2017 version. But I still don’t believe that it will solve the previous problems that the DCEU had (and still has) with their world building and characters. You flatter me! I’m so glad you enjoyed the movie!
That's what I thought as well. A lot of people don't realize what makes Superman great, it isn't his powers or feats of strength. It is his ideals and morals how someone so powerful can be so compassionate and selfless and willing to help everyone.
A very needed right now story!
finally, a superman movie that truly depicts who the man of steel really is, great job
This is the true essence of what it means to be a superhero: saving people from themselves, not the proverbial burning building. Very inspiring ! Makes me want
to brush off my superhero screenplay and film it.
Kudos, Jake !

INCREDIBLE TAKE ON SUPERMAN IN THE REAL WORLD. MAKES YOU WANT TO BELIEVE. THANK YOU FOR THIS SHORT FILM. SIMPLY GREAT.
Brilliant! This is everything I love about Superman and it just 'feels' like the character I grew up reading in comic books in the 80's. The funny thing is I googled John Nagle and honestly in most other photos he looks nothing like Superman, but somehow here I'm totally convinced that this is Clark Kent - raised by Ma and Pa in Smallville and I completely buy that at any moment those glasses could come off...shirt rip...and he'll fly into action as the Man of Steel. I wish there was more - but that's what makes this so darn good. From a Fan, THANK YOU!
Thanks! I'm glad you loved the ending. That was one of our favorite moments while filming. Would you like the be a part of my next movie? I posted a link to my new Kickstarter video in the One on One video description. Please watch it. If you like it, share it with your friends!
I can't believe I just now found this. This is one of the best things I've ever seen.
