  • Product Review HO Class One Modelworks TWF10 Well Car TTX - Model Train "Battleship"!
    Stack trains are a common sight on modern railroads, hauling containers all over the rail network. Specialized well cars designed specifically for hauling intermodal shipping containers have been in widespread use since the 1980s.
    This HO scale model train car from Class One Modelworks represents one of 75 unique cars built by Thrall Corporation for TTX in the early 1990s.
    These well cars, designated TWF10, were single unit cars that could haul up to a 48' shipping container in the well.
    With their Waggon-Union trucks partially concealed by the deep side sills, the TWF10s had a distinctive look that set them apart from other well cars. The unique look led some rail fans to call them "battleships". Some of these cars are still in use today.
    This highly detailed model train from Class One accurately captures the look of the real cars. It is heavy enough to be used empty, or it can be used with a variety of HO scale containers from brands like Athearn, Kato and Walthers.
    Besides the car itself, Dan also includes some 48' exterior post shipping containers from Class One Modelworks in this review.
    As usual, in this unboxing and product review Dan evaluates the model train's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
    If you like modern freight cars, stack trains, or just enjoy trains in general, be sure to check out this review!

    Those IBCs are set inside the holes on the top four ends of the container, and subsequently lock the container on top of it in place. You can find videos on CZcams showing how they’re placed and used.

      @DanielCortopassi  Před rokem

      There have been a few. I try to be a consistent grader, and unfortunately it's usually coupler height that gets a model downgraded. It's nice when I don't have to do that. Thanks for watching!

      @DanielCortopassi  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for alerting me because I wasn't aware of the Otter Valley cars. I'll have to think about it because they're a little too modern for my usual 1990s era, though I do have some more modern equipment I could run them with. Thanks for watching!

      @DanielCortopassi Thanks for thinking about it! They run through my town and granted they are also to modern for my 1990s era as well, but you know the modeler license sometimes pops up! If you do decide to, that would be great as you're one of the best reviewers!

    Good review Dan, I picked up one of these and I quite like the model. Mine came missing a bearing cap but COMW was kind enough to send a replacement at no cost to me. In this context, IBC storage would likely mean the place to store the IBC locks between containers when it’s in the unloaded configuration.

    I ordered 2 of these well cars on Class One's Fathers Day sale. Overall I'm pleased with them, but I've encountered 3 things I didnt like:
    1. The wheels on both of my cars dont roll as freely when pushed by hand as the much cheaper Walthers Mainline well cars. That was disappointing, but even more disappointing was the conflicting responses I received from Class One. One response said, "Sorry, that's just the way they are." A 2nd response said, "Please send us a comparison video b/c you may need new trucks/wheels."
    2. One of the 2 well cars had broken pieces in the box upon shipping & missing pieces. Class One has since mailed me the missing pieces, but quality control seems to be lacking.
    3. Container fitment in the 2 well cars I ordered varied greatly. In one car, Class One's own containers fit superbly. In the other, however, they were too tight & removing the containers caused 2 of 4 etched metal walkways to pop off (1 more walkway had already come off in shipping). I reattached these parts, but again the variances in fitment in their own containers leads me to believe quality control is an issue.

    • @DanielCortopassi
      @DanielCortopassi  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That's unfortunate you had bad experiences with your cars. It's possible that I got a good one when I bought mine. Since these were kind of rare, I only got the one car. Quality control does seem to be an unfortunate recurring issue with a lot of models these days. I'm glad Class One was willing to send replacement parts, but that kind of thing really shouldn't happen. Thanks for watching!

    • @DanielCortopassi
      @DanielCortopassi  Před rokem

      I'm not sure about why the containers are priced the way they are. The good thing is that this car will work with other HO containers like the ones made by Athearn and Walthers, up to 48' in the well. Thanks for watching!

    • @DanielCortopassi
      @DanielCortopassi  Před rokem

      The Siren Creek project is on hold while I design and build a cover for it. Our cats like to use it as a cat bed, so I don't want to start doing any detailing until I get a handle on that situation. I bought some plexiglass so I can make a cover that would allow the layout to be seen, but I still have a few things to figure out. Thanks for watching!

  • @torbinator9729
    @torbinator9729 Před rokem +1

    I feel it would have been justifiable to ding 5 points on the parts that had their color based on molded plastic instead of painted. This often does ruin the illusion of a metal finish. It's an expensive model. However I do respect your reviews being at a relatively high bar, so hopefully the camera was bringing out that limitation more then one might see when it's in one's possession.

    • @DanielCortopassi
      @DanielCortopassi  Před rokem

      It isn't that noticeable unless you hold the car up to a bright light. I was trying get some light to shine through it for the video to illustrate the point. The parts like that are very small and while it would be nicer if they were painted, I don't think they detract from the overall appearance. Thanks for watching!

      It is. Considering that there were only 75 built, and they've only become more rare with time, they're definitely unique. Having one mixed in with other intermodal equipment would be cool, making for a "rare" sighting on a model railroad as well. Thanks for watching!
