Honestly, this has brought me an inner joy that I never knew existed. I listen to this when I feel disheartened. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

@@sarahbrunton3794 Thank YOU, Sarah for telling me. This is such an encouragement. I am thrilled that the poem means so much to you; and so would Hopkins be. It was never published in his lifetime, so he never knew the happiness it would bring people. You might like to know about my Hopkins podcast, where I have recorded about 30 of his poems; and my more general poetry podcast which is releasing another Hopkins poem this week.

very nice, showed a theatrical element to reading poetry that you forget when studying them. many thanks for uploading.

Utterly magnificent. Engages the poem at all of the levels - emotional connection, intonation, physicality, experiencing the world of the poem; a true performer. I've never seen anyone bring a poem to life like this before. It deepened my understanding of the poem. I loose myself every time I watch it. Makes me feel like a kid again.

I remember reading this poem in an Intro to Poetry course as an eighteen-year-old and was blown away by its sprung rhythm. You do such a great job of reading this poem with a genuine sense of wonder. I love it and have kept coming back to it for ten years now.

Thankyou probably a bit more cheerful than old Hopkins would have recited his poem brilliant as he was I reckon cheerfulness wasnt part of the Jesuit lifestyle ha ha,but your recital and interpretaion is still definitive and utterly beautiful.

@megansspark I agree with you. Being older, I hope, means a growing appreciation for different interpretations. There's no one right or wrong reading of this poem, and there is certainly no competition.

@dadasopher thank you, surprising to read others thoughts.... maybe its a question of being older? I stand by 'lovely' and think it well conveyed. :)

1st time visitor (referred here by www.ignatianspirituality.com)
1st: As someone of above-average literacy, I have to say that popping into a presentation like this from the modern world requires some acclimation. Strange words, unusual cadence, etc.... The culture shock is strong.
2nd: After listening & reviewing it a few times, savoring it like, say beef jerky (Look, I only said I am of above-average literacy; I did not say I am of exceedingly above-average literacy!) I find the presentation grows on me.
I wonder if many of the bad remarkers logged their knee-jerk reactions and moved on.
I think it's very nicely done and engaging. Perhaps even addicting.

This reading displays all of the subtlety of a circus clown interpreting Shakespeare with a kazoo. It is melodramatic and silly.
For a profound reading by someone who actually understands this poem, watch the youtube video of the poem read by Stanley Kunitz.
