Levi, I love your videos and your joyful personality, Polaris is very fortunate to have you represent their product. I've been snowmobiling since 1987 at which time I started riding a Polaris Indy Trail and continued riding Polaris until '93, '94 and '95 when I rode Cats then went back to Polaris from 1996 through 2000. In 2001 I made the switch to Ski-Doo and have been riding them for the last 22 years.
I was able to do a 200 mile test ride on a friend's 2022 Matryx 850 a few weeks ago in northern Wisconsin and was simply blown away with the sled. All of your assessments in this video regarding the chassis is spot on (I haven't ridden a 650, yet) and are the same findings I experienced, 100%. Polaris absolutely knocked it out of the park with the Matryx. I've owned 27 new sleds in my life so far and I have never ridden a better handling sled than the Matryx. They're so easy to drive, the steering is light, the ergonomics are perfect, awesome seat, the body panels are sculped perfectly for outstanding wind protection and the narrowness of the seat/tank area along with the lightweight and the nimbleness makes it feel like you're riding a dirt bike. It's amazing how effortless the sled is to ride and the fun factor is totally off the charts.
As you can tell, I was more than impressed with the Matryx and after 22 years on Ski-Doo I just ordered a '24 XC 850 137" from Bill in Stratford, WI (my 7th Polaris from Bill). I can't remember the last time I was this excited to get my mew sled!!!! Anyway, keep up the great work on your videos, I absolutely love watching them and I appreciate what you do for the sport of snowmobiling and how well you represent Polaris. Maybe we can hook up for a ride with Jeff the next time you're in the Mosinee/Stratford area, LOL!!

Great review, I also got to ride one in January at the ambassador ride, the 650 is going to surprise quite a few people next season for sure, the Matryx platform is the best that I have ever ridden.
I agree on both! The 650 is the little engine that could! Matryx VR1 is the best trail sled i've been on!
Try the 2021 xrs. You wont ever look at Polaris again.

It's great to watch you leaning and showing people how it's done.
The majority of people I see these days don't even know how to lean, they just sit on the seat and bend a little. The stander uppers are the worst, they go so slow around corners it's ridiculous. They think they're going fast because the wind is hitting them I guess. Usually they stand straight up and lock their knees, totally defeating the object of standing in the first place
Jeremy and I were riding along a slightly bumpy trail in the U.P.. 44 to 50mph , came up behind a group of guys, all standing up, all brand new sleds, 30mph slowing down to less then 20 around corners. The back guy kept slowing down almost to a stop then pounding the throttle and throwing snow all over. After a few miles I couldn't take it anymore and passed them all one at a time wherever I got a space. Only the back guy let Jeremy past, so at the next road crossing I went across then waited for Jeremy to get around them. The front guy comes up and stops partly blocking me and starts coming at me with his hand out for me to stop. I flipped him off and we blew out of there.
These are the type of people who think they're qualified to judge how good something is or how well it handles. They ALL turn good at 20mph!
They need to get the hell out of the way, a 14 yr old kid on a 4stroke Yamaha wants to get through !
So Levi, please use your knowledge and have in the industry to help teach these people proper riding and etiquette on the trail.

Try the 21 xrs aswell as the matrix in the same say if you can. The new ras x front end is definitely better than the Polaris. The rear end the doo is for sure better. Polaris is good but not quite there with doo yet.

haha That was when I was riding the 96 XCR 600. Hearing the triple wide open for a bit sounded "too good" and I didn't know what it was jetted so I switch to the few second burst throttle haha

Thanks for the review Levi! Already spring ordered my 850 VR1 137. I got the opportunity to sit on a demo at my dealership here in norther Illinois last weekend and I couldn’t believe how natural the seating position was, I knew it was gonna be good! So stoked for next season already!

I was focused on your riding position into the corners AND then you mentioned it during your 'first impressions'. THAT is a huge difference in the body English. As a shorter rider I can rip the heck out of my 600 Cat but the acrobatics takes an energy toll! I'm sold just undecided on Indy or Assault.

I can already see that it takes the turns better then my indy xcr..I do find my xcr a bit tippy ..but it keeps you on your toes lol and is a blast to drive..it looks like the vr1 would be fun as well..can't wait to see them head to head..
The Indy XCR was my trail blaster this season! If I was going on a hard trail ride I took the XCR, but after riding the VR1 back to back, I'm a VR1 believer! the VR1 is so stable and connected to the trail, you can straight up boogy on it!

Great input. Currently riding skidoo G4 but these new Polaris sleds got me thinking.
Got to ride the 21 xrs late this winter. Its definitely better than the matrix. The new ras x is definitely more planted than the Polaris, the 850 doo is definitely ahead in the engine department too.

Steve Kerns fortunately it was in the high 20s low 30s when we went riding so the short windshield wasn’t bad.... but I’m getting at least the mid windshield on all my trail sleds for my face. They have medium and a large windshield which coupled with the new wind deflecting body panels it should be warmer than the AXYS

What is different in the chassis or suspension from a Axyss that makes it corner better? Can I still get a rack and saddle bags for my camping? I hope so . I don’t see my previous comment on this and my Pro S set up is the best hit tent trail sled in the industry. This is so important to me, it reinvigorated my happiness in riding. Now I have a base camp to extend my range and areas of fun. 25 years of Polaris loyalty here 😊❤️🇺🇸❄️☃️🛷⛺️

Do the Back to back next, a lot of us are questioning buying this since they never offered a XCR 137 in solid tunnel, so guys with a Switchback are questioning if the VR1 137 is as good as a XCR Switchback 137 in the old pro XC chassis. Show us how panels come off also. We cant go see these now since all the shows canceled

What track did you have on the sled? A lot of different options for snowcheck.
Kevin Mulkin 1.35 cobra. My favorite trail track is the storm 150.
Is the sled you are riding a 129 or 137? Have you ridden the other and which do you prefer for trail riding.
So wondering what there plans for XC and SX racing then with the extra 50cc? Sleeve that motor down or maintain the current 600 line to meet class regulations?
Polaris still has the XCR with a 600 and the race sled will also be a 600.
Levi nice review, now you have me guessing on the 850. I currently have a SBA 850, could I ever be happy with a 650? Will that 650 compare at all with the 850 arm pulling fun factor ?
Also, If you rode at night, how does that headlight compare with the Axys? Thanks
cajun869 the 650 pulls hard, but not as much as the 850. The 850 just keeps pulling and pulling!
cajun869 I did ride at night but unfortunately the headlight needed to be adjusted as it was angled down to far so I couldn’t see how well it worked.

dos it burn cleaner less smoke on start up ? its going to be hard to give up the 600 have a 01 xc and 17 rush
It is more efficient burning less gas and oil... And the best part is it is more powerful than the 600!
I want to start racing Cross Country races at age 59 .. They limit the displacement to 600 CC's adding 50 cc's and lowering the compression so it can run on 87 Octane was a good idea for trail riding but maybe not such a good idea for racing Cross Country ..
For cross country races the xcr is the better choice
I hope you’re right Levi. I trust you’re word bit like every Rush or Pro-S owner I’ve met, I’ve owned both, that uncoupled sled corners the best period. If this surpasses or at least matches that, I,l be happy. Those sleds are obviously being fazed out, and owners are nervous about getting new rigs in the future. I better be able to still get a rack and saddle bags for my hot tent camping set up or Polaris will answering up to a angry 25 year loyal customer. 😊❤️🇺🇸❄️☃️🛷⛺️
Lord Marshall The video coming out on Thursday will be helpful for you. We put the VR1 up against the SWB XCR with the pro XC rear suspension, Indy XCR, 137 XC with multiple riders , testing different sections. Good feedback from all the riders.

I wanna get the 650 for ditch riding, will it be enough power for wheelies and what not? my 550 indy has enough power but I just want more bottom end
The 650 has great power! The biggest issue is getting traction to wheelie. If you have a bigger lug track and some weight transfer set up in your suspension.
Man I am a doo guy but this 650 has my attention!
It's fast and has great pull from turn to turn!

The last sled I rode was a polaris xcsp 600 and I broke my arm lol. I'm interested in getting back into it. I like the indy xc 650. However I'm undecided between the 129 or 137 and which track I should get. I'd mostly be ditch banging but I also enjoy getting into deeper stuff (when I can find it, which is rare these days in my location)
if you like the deeper snow, i'd go 137. It helps off trail.

I haven't been on a 146 yet but after riding the 129 and having 144s AXYS I think it is going to be a stellar on / off trail sled! My guess is the 146 sks in the narrow setting will be a little easier to carve around and it has a 2.25 lug on the SKS as well. But if you are 50/50 I certain the MAtryx 146 will be way better on the trail and as good or better than the 144 SWB ASLT

Glenn Siewert VR1 will do terrible in the mountains! Haha The Matryx in a mountain sled trim will be great. The new console and 7S display with the group ride feature would be a great addition to the RMK lineup.
Since you're in MN, shouldn't be too hard to find ya if I think my '22 VR1 650 is a turd, hopefully Polaris is on top of snow check orders this year and I have my sled for the couple snows we might get.
Had an old wedge until last yr, a worn out edge the yr before, keeping my Widetrak LX that is unstoppable in more than 1 way.
Really wanted to get a Grand Touring G4 900 turbo, trusting the Polaris Embassadors the 650 Matryx will be better.

It depends on what kind of riding you do. 144 if I do more off trail, SWB XCR if i do more ditch banging and jumping, and VR1 if I am blasting trails.
All the above, I live in Idaho and I travel to visit friends such as (Kentucky, Oregon, Montana, Canada) I use my rmk pro for nasty stuff, but need something that's great for racing, on/off trail, need very versatile at it's best all around performance to would be great to for something that can handle it all. Hopefully this will give you a idea of what I need.
What was the first sled you owned. I have a 2003 Polaris classic 600 as my first sled
I rode my Fathers 1976 Yamaha Exciter quite a bit .. Was a Skibum for years my first sled was a used Polaris '92 Indy 500 with fuel Injection my First new sled was a 2006 Yamaha Attack second sled was a 2014 Skidoo Renegade 800
Dylan Hadland 1990 indy 400.... and I just bought a 1990 400 2 weeks ago to ride the sled that started my passion for snowmobiling!

What's it like off trail
Glenn Oake the 129 Had a 1.35 track so it went off trail like you would expect. But I would Expect 146 Switchback Assault will do off-trail like a boss!
so how was the fuel milage
The2000redrocket we didn’t do an official apples to apples test so I can’t speak accurately about it.
I snowchecked the 650 assault with the 1.5 ice storm do you know when production will start on the new sleds. I'm a little worried about getting mine with a the stuff that's going on now.

Dave g Hello Dave. Yes this is my opinion of the Matryx VR1 650 from my first ride on it . Regarding the front end, It uses the same front end as we have on our Polaris race sleds. My opinion on how they achieved the better stability on the trail is it looks like the ride height of the front end is lower. I wanted to measure the ride height but I thought of it while I was on the trail (not flat, level surface) which is not accurate. So we lifted the front end up and measured the Shock length to see if maybe the shocks were shorter....but it had the same length IFS as the 2020 Axys XCR we had with. With that said I think they took a page out of the “Offroad truck book”. By letting the shocks sit down in the travel it lowers the Center of Gravity which increases stability in the turns. then when you get into the bigger bumps or jumps the suspension drops out to absorb the bigger hits. (Again- my opinion) . But Because I was so impressed with how stable it was, I went out with 4 different AXYS sleds, and 4 other guys to test it back to back to get multiple opinions of what others thought. Next Thursday that video will come out and you can see and hear the difference between the Axys and the New Matryx from a group of us.
Levi, thanks for your insight I have a Rush Pro S 800 and was looking at the Xc last fall and now with the introduction of the Matryx chassis I need more info to make a decision. I'll stay tuned for your next update.

Shperax when the 850 patriot game out it had less than 1% failure. When the skidoo 850 etec came out it had a higher failure rate then the Polaris 850. So calling it a nightmare of a motor. You might wanna get your facts right. I have a 15 pro s switchback 800 with over 8,000 miles on it. 0 issues. Plan on running it 1 more season should have over 10,000 on it. Have buddies with 800 not making it nearly that high of mileage. And another buddy that’s had 2 850 etecs that he has roasted with under 5,000 miles🤷♂️

Seather come on, it’s not that old! It’s a 96 XCR haha I won’t lie, we all took turns running it and everyone got off of it with a smile! But I think it may be like Having grand kids- fun to babysit for a day or 2, but eager to give them back to the parents so they can deal with them. Haha

@@Levi_LaVallee visually, they don't have the aggressive styling as the previous generation, there is lots of empty space that makes them look droopy in my opinion. i have not seen it in person, nor can i comment on how they throw light. i can imagine other variants having worse styling with larger windscreens making them appear even narrower/smaller. i feel like i would replace them with aftermarket options if i were to buy a 2020.

And with most of it in normal motion not so many slow motion shots, which once in awhile are good to see the suspension work but come on stop the fakery

I like the looks of the skidoo's 10 years ago better than their new models. I am thinking of getting this model over the skidoo.
Why does their advertising boast about reliability. How many years of data do we have to go by for reliability?. ummmm ZERO. When they released the Patriot 850 it was a nightmare of a engine. Sure the kinks are worked out now. Don't expect reliability the 1st year a engine launches though.
shperax I had a hand full of 850s in 2019 and 0 issues. The VR1 I shot this video on had over 1000 miles before I got. I’d bet there are some 650 sleds up in roseau with another 0 added onto the end of that number.
@@Levi_LaVallee I know you have lots of experience but being who you are it's hard to not think that you take endorsement money. That's maybe the downfall of being famous. You just don't know if you can be trusted anymore. Would you trust OJ to sell life insurance?

In all honesty, I understand what you are saying. What I gave you were the facts about my experience with the 850 and the mileage on the 650 that I got to ride. I also gave you my opinion that I believe the new engine will be reliable based on what I know about how the manufacturers go about developing a new engine. For them to come out with an engine that has not been tested thoroughly and then have it be problematic would cost them a tremendous amount of money and it would tarnish the brand for years to come. That's why these engines are developed for years and testing in the most extreme conditions to ensure they will be reliable.
A guy who would loose his Sponsor ship if he ever said anything bad about it. Not a real world review at all.
What would you like to know about it?
For a trail sled, you would be hard pressed to find a better sled than it. But for my kind of riding, I would want stiffer suspension as it is doesn't handle the hard hits and jumps like the XCR suspension does.
