The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Like Placido Domingo said: "There never was and never will be a soprano like Birgit Nilsson."
The inhuman metal and ease of her top never ceases to amaze me. She is a wonder of nature and one of my favorites of all time!❤❤❤
This is sheer power, technique and grace on display, the way the divas of the past did it. Brava La Nilsson!
The Best Turandot ♥️
Power under control and driven out with flawless technique. God gave her a matchless voice.
The unforgettable great singer.
The voice of a Goddess blessing us mere mortals
Superb, majestic like the princess she plays…a magnificent stratospheric voice, riveting in its power and grace
Turandot was revived especially for the divine Birgit. Listeners can see the result of her Wagnerian training. Nothing is beyond her apparently effortless technique.
I've always been a Callas fan, and always will. She's my absolute favorite singer of all time. BUT...NO ONE, NOT EVEN CALLAS, can compete with Nilsson in the role of Turandot!
That's saying something. Callas was best at dark characters
@johninman7545 Very true! And I DO love her Turandot. But the main reason I still prefer Nilsson's is because she has that steely-cold sound to her voice that is perfect for this role. Callas had that too, but I could always still hear the depth, warmth and beauty in her tones. Nilsson sang this role like a block of ice, which I think this role demands.
Unbelievable! Unique! Incomparable!
Everything one needs to know about correct operatic singing is contained here in this video. Watch it over and over!
She and the orchestra didnt sync for the wholw vid tho'. I feel like she's trying to sabotage her own show by showing how bad the conductors can't follow the singer. Her voice as always....a goddess's...
@@mubaraksenju7521 It's hard to be in sync in those conditions. Who knows where the orchestra is located and whether the conductor can even see her, and vice versa. Also, the orchestra barely knows its music. So many mistakes.
She is beyond incredible!! A secure technique, floods of free flowing sound, and nerves of steel, even with the rather uncomfortable tempi and her dress not cooperating with her.
the Best!
What a voice! Very nice dress as well.
What a force of nature! Fabulous
Top-tier post. The great Nilsson!
Thank god for the Ed Sullivan Show so we can the greats like Julie Andrews, Birgit, and many others.
Wow, never saw this. Absolutely magnificent. 💐💐💐💐💐
Stunning
Brava! One of the best.
La Nilsson at her finest
Brava! Very well done. She had a marvelous voice! Thank you for sharing this.
You mean, Brava!
@@stephenschmall9029 Oops, you're right ✅️. Going to edit this. Thank you for correcting me. I appreciate it.
I agree with you. Birgit had an incredible voice and was a really fine singer. In her prime years, she could make the hairs raise on your arms.
I didn’t mean to be critical, maybe just a typo, but in the Romance languages there are definite vowel and spelling changes that differentiate between feminine and masculine. That is just how the languages work!
@@stephenschmall9029 It's okay, it wasn't a typo, I corrected it after you brought it to my attention. I appreciate being corrected. People today need to learn to accept constructive criticism anyway. Thank you for your constructive criticism. I really do truly appreciate it. I prefer to do things right.
All best wishes to you.
I now understand what Stallone saw in her. 🎤
😂 I wasn’t the only one

I think i have a LP of her singing Grieg's folk songs
What is an LP? And who's Grieg?
Birgit Nilsson sang this aria as a lullaby to her children, and as a result, they became lifelong insomniacs. A glorious voice.
😅
Birgit Nilsson had no children.
She had no children
Clearly the original post was a joke!!
Staccato. Bäst för tyska operor.
Any relation to Harry?
C'mon! Someone had to ask. 😁
@@garynilsson416 You're the third I've come across. Harry and Birgit are the other two. 😄
What harry?
That's a very manly looking woman. What a big head and neck she has. Wow!
Not really manly, but somewhat "bulky". Typical appearance of big - voiced soprano.
She was from a farmer family and worked picking beets before accepted to the opera.
I attended a 4 day masterclass when she was recently retired. One evening I sat almost directly behind her for some gala. Her back was very strong, even then. Different technique but I'm reminded of Vickers, whose powerful build was obviously an asset in his singing
All the better to sing opera with!
