Shocking Crash Tests Result. Was It Fair?

  • In our latest episode, we uncover the startling results of recent crash tests: the Mahindra Scorpio and MG 5 both received zero stars from ANCAP. This rare and concerning outcome raises serious questions about vehicle safety standards. Previously, only one vehicle, the Renault Trafic/Mitsubishi Express van in 2021, had ever scored so low since ANCAP's founding in 1993. We also look back at the Proton Jumbuck's 2009 crash test, which barely managed one star, and the Mitsubishi Galant's impressive five-star performance in 1993. Intriguingly, the Scorpio had previously achieved five stars in NCAP tests. Join us as we delve into the complexities of crash test ratings and ask a critical question: Is a car's safety rating truly indicative of its safety, or are these ratings swayed by the testing regulations? Tune in for an eye-opening exploration into the world of automotive safety.

I must point it out, competition got really tough in Australian SUV market after entry (at 35k) of Scorpio N. Mahindra will provide ADAS but it should strictly be a choice of buyer. Read the test report first buddy. It was not scored on the basis of ADAS. The structural integrity is not as strong as everyone think it is. The score for driver and child occupants was very poor. ADAS was supposed to amplify the safety which in this case was already very poor. There are hundreds of cars without ADAS that ANCAP tested and only one of them got 0 star before ScorpioN.

People want a clear and easy to read scale, not a nuanced and complex assessment of the actual strengths and weaknesses of the cars. If you want that, it's freely available for you to consult.
But then, active security systems are also crucial (by the way, airbags and ABS have been around for just as long as the NCAP institutions, singling them now is a bit incoherent), because the safest (and most economical) car is the one that never gets in an accident. Active systems are becoming more prevalent and widespread and accessible, and it's become something we can expect from all types of cars, it's fair to adapt the crash tests to reflect that.

Giving it a rating of zero for no ADAS is silly. ADAS won't save you in a crash, it might prevent an unnatentive driver from crashing.
A tank going at 20km/h has no ADAS yet no one dies from crashing a tank. Airliners have more ADAS than any car on the market but when something goes wrong people still die.

Cars should have safety ratings based on how safe they are for the driver and passengers in a collision and how safe they are for other drivers and passengers in a collision. We need to get rolling battering rams (also inaccurately referred to as light trucks) off the roadways. If they want to skirt motor vehicle regulations, then keep them on the farms. If they want to be on the roads, then they should conform to the regulations everyone else has to.

  • @123fourfive5

Okay y'all. We need to clear up some details.
The Ancap score is a combination of
    1. Adult occupant protection
    2. Child occupant protection
    3. Vulnerable road user protection
    4. Safety assist
These cars don't have Safety assist, true. And vulnerable road user protection is not important.
But these cars didn't score very highly in the passenger protection either. Both are around the 40% mark. The Scorpio scored an impressive 80% in the child protection.
Having 0 stars may be unwarranted because we put too much focus into the active safety instead of making good drivers but these cars have a long way to go for passive protection too.

They did what they had to to negatively impact the sales of Mahindra.
And yes... Not having ADAS was just an excuse for giving 0 stars... Because the car in itself if very safe, if thr test was fair and not rigged, the car deserves atleast 1 or 2 stars.

There is "G" which adds up in every crashes. "G" refers to the acceleration due to gravity, typically denoted as "g." It's a measure of the acceleration experienced by an object due to the gravitational force exerted by the Earth. On the surface of the Earth, the standard acceleration due to gravity is approximately 9.81 meters per second squared (m/s²). In the context of car crashes, "G" is often used to describe the force experienced by occupants during sudden changes in velocity, such as during a collision. For example, if someone experiences 20 Gs in a crash, it means they are subjected to 20 times the force of gravity. So you be thinking that its not fair that other car with dummy inside survives but still get a zero or bad star. G also adds up the chance of your death after the crash.

What is the difference between ANCAP and NCAP?
However, with some new Australian vehicles, it's important to know if a car's NCAP rating is a local (ANCAP) or European rating. The key difference between them is that the EuroNCAP enforces stricter conditions for pedestrian protection, while the ANCAP's scoring system is tougher on vehicle occupant protection.
