I only knew Michael Palin’s genius side of comedy from watching him in “Monty Python” series and movies, and from the hilarious movie “A Fish Named Wanda.” But to my surprise this is the first time I see him in a drama. What a great actor!
The sound could be louder, please. It's stupid for CZcams to cover the last screen with advertisements of other channels, blocking the written end of the story.
For those saying how awful Michael Palin's character was, don't forget this is a story about a man who was changed by something he never thought would happen to him - falling in love.
Lovely film, hadn't heard of it before. From what I can tell, the original title is AMERICAN FRIENDS. I've spent quite a number of days vacationing in Oxford from the US and recognized many of the streets and buildings.
I often wonder why they do not make movies like this more often....? Great movie! Seems like modern/popular movies are.... blah... everyone is entitled to their own likes/dislikes though...
That's why there are so many of them in Hollywood and their movies don't go as big as Hollywood's, right? I love a lot of British media, including period pieces and classic novels, but even so.
Yes. @LadyAstarionAncunin (below) is correct. We're fortunate to find this entertainment. I agree though it just isn't the Hollywood culture. Learn to live as an outsider in your own country and vote with your dollars and attention. Most of my entertainment originates in Britain and am even more surprised that much is from decades ago. I am adjusting to an alien culture and time everyday.
I read the synopsis before i started watching this, and wondered what societal norms could have been breached back then? I guess we've made some progress since then, after all. I've always liked Michael Palin, and it's nice he's made a trubite to his grandfather this way.
So glad to have found this - a proper romantic ending for once, and so many of my favourite actors popping up. Though the great David Calder's brown Barnet had to be seen to be believed! 😂
Thank you for the upload. It's such a peaceful film and the classical music throughout was calming. Also such beautiful scenes of rolling hills and greenery. Loved it ❤
I recognized the voice of Simon Jones as one of the professors. He plays Bannister in The Gilded Age on HBO. He played the king in the first Downton Abbey film. Love his voice.
After being educated in Connecticut and working for decades in New York I moved to the mountains of Northern California in 2018 and it was is better than I ever expected. Certainly must be the warmest place on earth above 2000 ft above sea level. But the alps look nice if you like ice and not sun
I read a sermon by a bishop once, the central point of which was that ladies should only ever wear crinolines with their costumes for climbing mountains. I thought to myself; he’s a sound fellow!
The young lady who plays the role of "Elena" plays really well here and leaves the impression of a mature yet not old grand dame, a pretty lady whom certainly many unmarried men would like to have.
I really liked the movie... However it is quite irritating to have the screen blown up with ads for another two movies, obscuring the final ending script... Why can't the ads come after the movie is completed and the roll of characters seen..? This really screws the pooch... this has happened so often on so many movies on this platform - I strenuously object to this and wish I could stop it... I paid not to have ads, period... ads should come only after the total completion of the films and the roll of characters...
Kinda slow, love Palin though. Great to honor his ancestor. Glad to see this gentleman get out of that jail of male intellect back into the real world of heart despite other dudes' gosips. Love Palin still.
Does this movie go by any other name? I recognize Simon Jones who played Arthur dent in the hitchhiker's guide series but neither Google nor the Internet movie database says this title exist.
They did at that time. No foldaway, easy care clothes. Everything was wool and cotton, sometimes silk, and needed a lot of care, as well as taking up lots of space. Also don't forget people would be expected to dress (formally) for dinner, so he'd need to take a frock coat, formal waistcoat and ties, evening trousers, shirts, collars, shirt fronts, studs, and evening shoes, before he even started packing his walking clothes.
❓Mr. Sick, I don't have adverts. But then I'm on You Tube Premium. You may watch movies for free, 24/7, all over the Internet and you complain. Why is that ?
I suspect it may have got mixed up with the American comedy show 'Friends'. There would have been lots of idiotic comments like 'what are you talking about? This isn't Friends!'.
That name in the 19th century is a more than eligible suitor for a pregnant female without family or fortune or practical education? We have a great re-set today. Females no longer need a men but may expect one if they wish, We see motives more clearly today and have greater self-determiniation. We're more liberated today and are becoming more so. Live accordingly. An engaging story, beautifully filmed with locations and costuming at the highest standard. I believe neither males nor females would want to return to the relationships of those days no matter how picturesque. You can see how the female had no control over her emotions and how, in effect, she destroyed the career of the male lead.
@@johnwollschlager9827 Absolutely, most of the comments here are through the view of 21st century not taking into account the times it was supposed to portray. Women at that time needed a husband to exist in the society and men need a woman to maintain a household or like this poor man Ashby forbidden to form any sort of relationship if he wanted a career. Story of my g-mother... as soon as she turned 16 her family was on a lookout for a suitor and my g-father got an offer of a job as a headmaster at a boys school but he needed a wife to get it. Therefore he went looking for one. He was 28 at that time. Yes, they got married but the marriage was not a happy one. Proper on the side of my g-mother but with many indescretions and gambling on the side of my g-father. They were always short of money but my g-father demanded a household run on the level of their social status. He would say to my g-mother: dear we have a dinner for 12 people today, local doctor, lawyer, priest, business person... And she had to provide. She started taking boarders to help with the finances. So people think about the times, it is not 21c that is portrayed in this movie.

Apparently about Michael Palin’s real life grandfather? How marvelous Michael could play the role!

Yes, Edward Palin, there's a reference in the end credit. He and Eleanor eloped and had seven children.

What year was this movie made ?
1991. Written by Michael Palin about his great-grandfather.
Who is the actress who plays Eleanor?
I have seen her before but can’t quite place her.
Connie Booth, the American born former wife of John Cleese.
She played the maid in Fawlty Towers.
Trini Alvarado. She played Meg March in little woman 1994 version.
This movie was on CZcams earlier, but is great. But a bad copy 🤔
