I would say fresh graduate are easily to pursue till PhD, but not DBA. DBA required those with work experiences as it is more practical. Some supervisors who supervised a DBA candidates expect that the quality of the thesis/dissertation would be like a PhD. I got a sample of few PhD thesis and compared with some DBA, what I could see was much theories in PhD work with less focus on implementation, practice execution, solving problem and recommendation, but for DBA, less theoretical and emphasize more on practical solution. I'm proud to earned my DBA.
Hi, I'm pretty new to this, I've a BBA as of now. I'm thinking DBA will get me recognition from publishing papers to leading journals... But I want to know why you decided for DBA? What's the right mindset you should have before applying
DBAs are for the real world CEOs, C-Suite, Directors and the like, but can also work within an academic/classroom setting .... PhDs are solely for the academic/classroom settings.
Both PhD and DBA are terminal degrees, purely research based and deemed equivalent by higher education regulators. Both can make you eligible for tenure track. The deal maker or breaker is your publication record, not your degree title. Also, know that some PhDs would always try to run down DBA based largely on professional envy and frustration. Totally ignore them and march on. A typical AACSB accredited DBA in USA has over 500 hours of taught courses and seminars before a student is permitted to work on a research dissertation. Students receive extensive statistical training in basic stuff plus things like MLR, HLM, Strucuted Equation Modeling , K-Means Clustering, Timeseries Analysis, Logistic Regression, etc. Many DBAs would also have real life experience which a PhD both lacks and envies. This would make a difference in student reviews . DBAs would also have better net worth and ROI. If you take into account opportunity cost, DBA is much cheaper. DBA also tend to have better social skills and confidence. DBA would do much better than PhD in navigating interdisciplinary topics. Although DBA is considered more applied research in nature. There is nothing that prevents you from developing original theory. You have the option to make your dissertation completely PhD like better fitted for academy rather than industry. This is a good option for people from industry who want to permanently transition to academics. Also, note that in AACSB accredited program you can be taught and supervised by only published faculty members holding doctorates. So you will be taught and guided by high caliber faculty only with track record in getting published in quality journals. A simple PhD with no publications cannot teach in a DBA program But all of this is true only for an AACSB accredited USA based DBA program. Europeans have a different DBA training model. In general European doctorates, including PhDs, tend to be less rigorous than American ones. Non accredited DBA programs could be as bad as non accredited PhD programs. Avoid both. Note: this comment is copied from Quora.

However, I incurred illogical advisor oversight of my DBA dissertation due to the fact that I chose a mixed methods structure. In the end, I was successful.

Great post! I think it can also be ideal to earn a practitioner doctorate (DBA, EdD, DNP, etc.) with the intentions of gaining a faculty position IF you are exclusively wanting to teach at a 2 year or non-research institution.
Manny! I think I had you for one of my MBA classes at UIW? I was looking into their DBA program and I am wondering too. What is the value of holding a DBA? lol.
I feel like there is a tinge of academic-practitioner divide in your understanding of these degrees. There is no hierarchy of doctoral degrees. It’s not as much apparent in this video as it is others. MD and JD are in the same class as a DBA. You pay for them and they get you a seat at a new table. It’s simple. Same as yours except you work yours off instead of paying fiat cash. I love your stuff, though. I just don’t enjoy your take on that one thing. I don’t think it’s overt. It almost sounds like your explaining it to us, like “ guys seee it’s not so baddd” 😂😅 lol. Surely your research degree taught you more critical thinking than this. That’s all.
@@HrithikSaw_ Hi Hrithik, I'm interested. I've just graduated so pretty new to DBA. Could you share me the benefits of this course and what's the 1 reason why anyone should get the dr title in business?

Hi, Dr. Dave, I would like your opinion. So, I just finished a Master of Science in Law Enforcement Intelligence and Analysis and I have a BA in Political Science. I have been accepted into a DBA program in one school, and an MBA program in another school. My background is in the social sciences, but I want to begin working in financial crimes, so I have decided to continue my education with a business degree. Considering that I don't have formal education in business, do you think it would be a mistake for me to do the DBA, and should I do the MBA instead? Thank you
Certainly not an issues. The DBA journey has investigation into a mix of management discipline before your focus into the thesis development. You have a deep knowledge domain from other areas, in your thesis you can dive deep with the infusion of management theory foundation that you pick up from the module.
I would recommend getting an MBA unless you are on an executive track or a working executive. DBA programs are designed work working managers and executives, because they want you to put your EBM skills to work making informed decisions. If you don't make decisions, you want a degree that prepares you to become a manager.
In the business world, if you have the average intelligence, you are respected by the amount of money you have in your banks. Universities will grant you the degree if you do something important to the society.
Both DBA & PhD programmes require the candidate to produce a doctorate-level dissertation. But because DBA candidates will have to complete a certain amount of coursework (seminars) and also consultancy work, does that mean they will have less time to attempt their dissertation? Is there any difference between a DBA dissertation and a PhD dissertation?
Dr DAVE i think you must have a problem with the DBA. Have you ever been rejected by one of these programmes? You're always talking about DBA in a way to downgrad it even if you try to hide it. Trying to convince people consciously in a roundabout way that DBA holders cannot do serious research is your real aim but unfortunately you got it wrong. There are in one hand some bad PhD programmes which produce PhD holders with 0 publications and bad DBA programmes which have the same results. In the other hand there are excellent DBA programmes which teach everything needed to conduct outstanding research. What you must accept at the end of the day is that the ability to produce research has nothing to do with the name of your doctorate but only your own skills and discipline can allow you to do research or not and get you in the world of published researchers. What is so hard in research methodologies that can not be understood by DBA students? Nothing i think so why the holder of a DBA which is a research degree can not be a good researcher?
@@lauravarelaphd that is an over simplification, to clarify that for accuracy DBAs don't create Primary Research meaning we don't analyze large datasets and take 7 years to make a small dent in the universe of the research world. What we do is review and create systematic Reviews of primary research, CATs and Case studies about decisions we make using EBM. We are researchers just not primary researchers.
Taking a more positive tone, I think Dr Dave is trying to be objective, but there is a bias. This is not uncommon since we all have bias, and there is tension in the education community between PhD and EBM practitioner degrees. The thing is we need each other. EBMs are consumers of primary research that is created by the PhDs. The primary research gives us EMB insights and inspires us to make research in the form of Systematic Reviews, CATS, and Case Studies. We are researchers, just a different kind of researcher. Also I use the term EBM because there are many types of practitioner doctorates. Nursing, Education, and now Business.
