Zika virus outbreak in 3 Indian states - why you should be concerned

  • Zika virus, first detected in India in Gujarat in 2016, has triggered fresh outbreaks in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala. Though non-fatal in most cases, this pathogen can lead to serious birth defects in babies born to infected women. The current outbreak has prompted the Centre to issue an advisory to states, but lack of testing and surveillance remain major concerns.
