      *Self-Surrender and Rest*
Oh, how many lose the richest blessings that God has in store for them in health and spiritual endowments! There are many souls who wrestle for special victories and special blessings that they may do some great thing. To this end they are always feeling that they must make an agonizing struggle in prayer and tears. When these persons search the Scriptures with prayer to know the expressed will of God, and then do His will from the heart without one reservation or self-indulgence, they will find rest. All the agonizing, all the tears and struggles, will not bring them the blessing they long for. Self must be entirely surrendered. They must do the work that presents itself, appropriating the abundance of the grace of God which is promised to all who ask in faith.
*“If any man will come after Me,”* said Jesus, *“let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Luke 9:23.* Let us follow the Saviour in His simplicity and self-denial. Let us lift up the Man of Calvary by word and by holy living. The Saviour comes very near to those who consecrate themselves to God. If ever there was a time when we needed the working of the Spirit of God upon our hearts and lives, it is now. Let us lay hold of this divine power for strength to live a life of holiness and self-surrender.
      *****
The word of God is to be our lessonbook. The Lord is our helper and our God. Let us look to Him to open the way for the carrying out of our plans.

      *Relation of Faith and Works*
Christ said, *“If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).* I feel such an intense interest that every soul shall see, and understand, and be charmed with the consistency of the truth. The evidence of our love to Christ is not pretention, but practice....
*“If a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him and make Our abode with him” (John 14:23).* Oh, my brother, walk carefully with God. But remember that there are some whose eyes are intently fixed upon you, expecting that you will overreach the mark, and stumble, and fall. But if you keep in humility close to Jesus, all is well.
*[See 2 Peter 1:1-11.]*This is the faith which we must have, that works by love, and purifies the soul. There is no place in the school of Christ where we graduate. We are to work on the plan of addition, and the Lord will work on the plan of multiplication. It is through constant diligence that we will, through the grace of Christ, live on the plan of addition, making our calling and election sure. For if ye do these things *- “add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity”* - *“for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ”*
      *(2 Peter 1:1, 5-7, 10, 11).*
      -Letter 44, 1893, 4-6. (To A. T. Jones, April 9, 1893.)

Thje problem is that the presenter did not answer his own question. The NT Book of Acts of the Apostles tells us something about the earliest events ; a little about Peter and about Paul. However, it ends before their death. It does mention the death of some such as Stephen who was an insignificant figure. Yet nothing about the death of Paul or Peter. For many, this is strong evidence that the book was completed before their deaths. It says virtually nithing about the rest of the Apostles or what happened to them.

I came here to sample the content after reading about the upcoming 9/11 special on Breakpoint. I thought perhaps it would be a good resource for my children, who were all born long after that event. Suffice to say this clip convinced me that I will not be coming back to watch the 9/11 special or show it to my children. Asserting a series of unfounded, baseless, sourceless assertions is not "history", it is propaganda. It is well established, even by serious scholars who are conservative Christians, that the tales of the Disciples' fates are later inventions and legends, and nothing reliable at all can be said about the fate of any of the 12. To state otherwise is to fly in the face of all responsible scholarship on the matter. "Drive By History" might be a more appropriate moniker . . .

    • @AndyMiller_windskisong
      @AndyMiller_windskisong Před 2 lety

So - did you watch the full episode, or just the clip? "nothing reliable at all can be said about the fate of any of the 12" does not appear to be an accurate statement of the state of historical scholarship as the fates of James, son of Jebedee (Acts 12:2), Peter, Paul, were documented within the lifetime of the writers of the NT. We read also in Acts that as each of the disciples spread out to minister and evangelize, many of them were eventually martyred for their faith, but few of the details were preserved in the Bible. The Jewish historian, Josephus, reported that James son of Alpheas was stoned and then clubbed to death because of his faith. raychoi.org/2012/06/01/what-happened-to-the-12-disciples-after-the-resurrection-and-ascension/ psalm91.com/2020/12/04/what-happened-to-the-twelve-disciples-of-jesus/ www.beliefnet.com/faiths/christianity/whatever-happened-to-the-12-disciples.aspx bibleask.org/how-did-the-twelve-disciples-die/ You might want to tone down your vitriol to "the tales of many of the Disciples' fates are not well documented" or "not nearly as well documented as the resurrection". But since I haven't seen the full episode, I can't speak to how well THEY talked about the historicity. Can you?

      He didn't say Apostles.
This is bc he knows, as you astutely pointed out, we don't know with certainty what became of any of the original 12. (actually not true. We know what happened to Judas)
And Paul, though not one of the original 12, was executed in Rome.
James, Jesus' brother, though an unbeliever before the cross, believed and became the leader of the Jerusalem church after the ressurection, was killed by Herod in the book of Acts .
But nothing the man said in the video was inaccurate.

@@shredhed572 That's some nice rationalization. Ask anyone who "The Disciples of Jesus" are - that term is synonymous with the 12. The speaker even makes a distinction between Jesus speaking to his Disciples, i.e. the 12, and the others in the crowd following him. If the speaker is parsing a distinction between the 12 and other disciples, then he's doing it in a way to lead his viewers to assume he's talking about the 12; pretty deceptive stuff.
