    Can hardly go wrong with a Canon product. Been trying to scare one of these up for a while, but like you said, good, working examples are getting harder to find at anything approaching a reasonable cost. Thank you for sharing your views and your time on this amazing super-8 camera. Happy Holidays.

    The best review about this camera in the internet! Now I know which Super 8 to buy! Thanks a lot man! Also, please could you kindly help us and share with us the links of the hood adapter, wide angle adapter, and ND filters you mention so we can buy them as well. That would be really appreciated if you could reply or add them in description .. I guess many people would b thankful for that! Thanks again!😍🙏

    My first "real" S8 camera was the 514 XL-s. One day, in the middle of a roll it just stopped advancing the film forward, I later found out that the gear inside the camera is plastic and they wear out. Luckily I picked this camera up for like $15 before S8 was hot again somewhere in the early 2000's. The 514 (non s) doesn't shoot 24 frames which is a deal breaker for people wanting to use the footage to cut into digital or larger format film projects. I agree though, the form factor is amazing and they are so easy to use.

    I had the beaulieu 4008-zmII. I loved it. A hard to hold but was great when mounted on a tripod. I also had a cheap Sear’s focal super 8 - but it didn’t have much exposure control but the macro feature was nice.

    I agree with all you said. Except I am going to be contradicting myself as I am going to be shooting sound film. I'll be using a Braun Nizo Integral 7 at 24fps. The beauty of it is that the camera can use both silent and sound films. Got some AGFA movie chrome sound films to play with and some actors will be doing very short monologues. I'll be doubling up with a TASCAM too so I can still use if the audio is terrible. But I hope to project the sound film as part of a film screening evening in a local theatre. I always say the best Super 8 camera is the one you are using to just get out and do it.

    • @NateMatosPhotographer
      @NateMatosPhotographer  Před 4 lety

      How are you dealing with the sound sync and Telecine? I've always assumed the magnetic audio track would be hard to digitize.

    • @super8blog71
      @super8blog71 Před 4 lety

      @@NateMatosPhotographer I haven't done it before.This will be an experiment. But in terms of digitizing the magnetic audio, I am checking with the lab as to what the options are for that. They encouraged me to use sound and to play about with it. If all goes well I will be playing the films in a Super 8 projector with sound from the film itself. I am also using a digital recorder (TASCAM) in case it sounds horrible. I have had some fun adding sound to a silent Super 8 film this way. I record at 24fps but still have to play about with the speed in Premiere Pro to sync the audio. I had had reasonable success. I uploaded a clip with brief sound here on my other channel: czcams.com/video/jTePCsD19jE/video.html

    Well said! I've heard so many good things about the canon super 8 cameras. I wasn't able to find one a couple of years ago though. Instead, I got a braun nizo that was also under $100 at the time. What matters is that you have a tool that helps you learn about the medium. The next format I'm eyeing is the 16mm, but I feel like I need to first come up with a project worth shooting before I can justify making the leap

    • @NateMatosPhotographer
      @NateMatosPhotographer  Před 4 lety +2

      I do love those Nizo cameras, beautiful piece of modern industrial design. 16mm is fantastic, and surprisingly outside of camera expense it's really not much more to dev/telecine for a comparable film length.

    Loving your Super-8 channel. Grew up shooting Super-8 in the late 70's and 80's. Had a great Chinon camera for years and a Canon. Eumig projector. Enjoying your films, too. Recently got a bunch of mine tele-cine'd. Always liked Agfa over Koda-chrome stock, although Ekta-chrome pretty good. And faster. Dabbled with Fuji stocks also.

    • @NateMatosPhotographer
      @NateMatosPhotographer  Před 4 lety +2

      It's a great camera don't get me wrong. I have a test roll on my channel as well using it. But it's big and bulky. A lot of the heft is due to the sound recording, and different settings that just aren't used in a modern workflow. For example it can do a fade in/fade out. But for me, the cost of doing that in camera doesn't outweigh doing it digitally later and having more flexibility with the footage. Personally I don't see it as being worth it over a camera like the 514 unless you really need that 10x zoom or 24fps.

    The problem with XL shutters is that they soften the image. And this camera only goes up to 18 fps.

    • @jamesprivet
      @jamesprivet Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks for the helpful comment. Does the soft image problem also exist with the Canon XLS models also? Have you by any chance compared with Braun Nizo shutters and image softness for any of theor models? Thanks for any advice!

    • @MORCOPOLO0817
      @MORCOPOLO0817 Před 4 měsíci

      @@jamesprivet XL shutters have a wider shutter opening. Which means that movement taking place in the "window of exposure" during that one shutter ratation will be more blurred. Any XL or XLS shutters ( the S just stands for "sound") will have a longer exposure time than a a non XL shutter ( 180 degrees or less). If you have ever seen a still image from a high speed camera that shoots thousands of frames per second of a bullet's trajectory path where the bullet looks perfectly still suspended in mid air, you will understand the concept. Now, with moving subjects like people, animals or other objects in motion you don't want the shutter speed to be too fast either or you will get an "animated" look like the original King Kong. In that movie the puppet was not actually moving during exposure because it was posed and left still for each exposure.

    Yes, it's a fine little camera. The 514XL is not a late model, it's from 1976. Split image control should be precise, perhaps the viewfinder it's not well corrected to your eyesight if you don't nail sharpness? Your footage seems too fast, perhaps you can slow it down in post so it doesn't look like slapstick?! Or next time order it being scanned in 18fps.

    514XL is highly overpriced and it doesn't have manual exposure. Minolta XL401 is the same form factor, has a much better lens and it has manual exposure. I don't get why so many people choose the 514XL while there are better cameras that are the same size and weight but are just better. I have a 514XL so I can compare.
