This sewing machine is a family gem as my maternal grandmother sewed and helped the whole family for over 50 years and it is working very well today. If you want, I could send you photos, the cabinet, unfortunately, is not original, as this Singer was stationary for a long time, the termites ate all the wood.
How sad about termites, but family gems are still wonderful :)

I am 50 now. I just bought a sewing machine like this one in a junk yard because I always wanted to patch up my clothes. Thanks to your good help, I just mended my first pair of pants in my life with a sewing machine, and I am stoked. I couldn't make it work, but I saw from you, it is necessary to thread the needle from left to right. I am wearing those mended pants as I write. So good video.

I wanted to type a note thanking you for your very easy to understand instructions on your Singer 15. My mum has the very same model and the cabinet looks the same also. She brought it from London with her when she came to Canada in 1947. She sewed endlessly on it . She passed away in 2013 and it got left to me as neither of my sisters wanted it. I am a retired mechanic and love all things mechanical. I took it apart washing all the mechanical bits and re oiled it. I watched your video to learn how to thread it and set the tension . I bought some new needles and thread for denim . I am happy to report that after following your tutorial, I was able to sew hems on my new blue jeans ! I was pretty happy . So thanks again for all your help .😀

Great explanation of operating the treadle. I am a retired sewing instructor and you were very thorough and had great video of the steps. Well done. I am restoring my grandmothers 1901 Singer Treadle machine and this one is a bit different but most of the old Singers thread pretty much the same.

My mother brought her Singer 15 -81 RAF centennial (handcrank) over from England on a former liberty ship. I use that machie almost daily. I take very good care of it, those Kilbowie machines are fantastic!!!
Great video and A+ for the manual. I've looked everywhere. When my parents were in Saudi Arabia in the 80's, my mother bought a Sinterman Mercedes DeLuxe machine. It works well but I'm a novice at this. Thank you.

My treadle machine will finally be ready to use later today and this was super useful. When I got it it had a faulty electric motor retro fitted to it and the table was missing. It was also fully seized up from being left in the damp. I motorbike mechanic friend got her moving again and I found a table for her that she has just been fitted to. I'm super excited about using her.

Excellent, I have inherited a fold away Singer treadle machine and considering learning to use it, potentially for stitching classic car seats amongst other things. At the moment I don't have a clue , so a new adventure in retirement. The machine is mint as it is a fold away, only the wood needs some TLC and maybe a bit of varnish.
What a wonderful adventure awaits you! And such a marvelous idea to work on classic car seats!
Your machine will most definitely make it through a single layer of leather or vinyl to top stitch or emboss.
If it struggles with two layers, you can always look into getting a heavier duty Singer 31-15. I have a treadle model one of these, too, and it will feed a more sturdy upholstery thickness thread and power through thicker materials.

I've inherit a similar sewing machine from my granny, just discovered it was manufactured in 1916, unfortunately don't have the manual, cause she bought used in the 40's and I'm trying to learn how to use. I have been dreaming of getting and using a vintage or antique Singer sewing machine, but as I am so new to sewing, I am quite intimidated! However, seeing you walk through this gives me some confidence that my dream might be possible!

Two things that I love most about these older machines are the logic and straight-forward mechanical principles. They're really NOT difficult to figure out.
If at all possible and if you have the space, I would suggest a treadle. The early electrical machines are just as strong, but what you gain in speed and a reverseable feed, you lose in control.
I hope to one day do a tutorial series following the Singer Art Embroidery book - stunning pieces, all created one stitch at a time with a very controlled treadle (not full-speed like modern machines).
In the meantime, more operational videos will follow - so watch this space!

Trust me as long as there is nothing seriously broken, day underneath 24wahington will give you all the advice you need to get your machine up and running again. I The threading of the two bobbins looks the hardest but this kind lady pauses and goes over most of the threading procedure twice over. I’m a bloke so if I can do it I’m pretty sure you can two. I am no sewer and don’t think I will ever be. I just wanted to bring this beautiful old machine back to life and with the help of 24 Washington a small can of machine oil and two reels of cotton my Singer looks just great all prepared for use. If any one asks me I can tell them the difference between the feed dogs and the tensioner! Go and give it a try. I must admit fitting the new treadle drive belt took three attempts. So very easy if you first place it around each drive wheel pull as tight as you can before cutting to size. When I fixed the first two attempts I treadles away but noticed the belt was stationary as it wasn’t tight enough for the wheels to make contact! 3rd time lucky and now it works perfect and looks so elegant. A little bit of history rescued from eventually ending up in a scrap metal merchants or a tip. Good luck and take care and please wear a mask when you are out amongst the masses. Bye for now Barry
Great video! You have lovely hands and a gentle voice! Perfect for giving confidence in learning about these wonderful machines. I remember that Mr. Singer's vision to bring the sewing machine in the home played a part in the emancipation of women at that time and wonder who sat at mine then.

Probably the house husband when he came home from a hard days labour. Only kidding yes you are right. I guess it gave a great deal of enjoyment too. The only thing regarding emancipation. As a child of the 60s I well remember that the factories of most towns and cities were 99% filled with women using the machines and the other one percent were warehouse/ drivers and of course the over lookers were males cracking the whip if you weren’t keeping up with demand. Anyway good luck with your machines. I’m a bloke but have just brought a bit of history back to life thanks to 24 Washington. Although not in use it will never be on the scrap heap and looks amazing polished and cottoned up ready to go. Take care Barry.
I was just marveling at how much control you have over your treadle, being able to stop and start without using the hand wheel, and I was going to ask how one learns to do that -- now I know about practicing with the stitch mechanism disengaged. I'm sure it says that in my 27 manual too, but I'll have to try it!

I learnt to sew on one of these that had been converted to take a small external motor. It was a steep learning curve. My ex wife gave it away so I ended up having to buy a newer machine that did things like zigzag and buttonholes.
I'm so sorry that your old machine was given away.
There's definitely a place for modern machines, but vintage machines can usually be found from time to time. The attachments that were invented to allow for more sewing diversity are little engineering marvels, in my opinion.
You may have seen the other video I have which goes over some of the most common attachments.
No one beat antique singer sewing machine which is originally own by my great grandmother and she inherited to my mother because this old quality is really good compare to modern sewing .

thankyou so much, very informative, i also have this machine but mine was made in 1940, it has the same decals too.im looking to refurbish/restore as i do not get on with electric machines(i have one which now doesnt work but rarely used), i learnt on a treadle when i was young and want to re-engage with a change of pace.

Thanks for such an awesome video! We are currently refurbing my partners 1903 treadle Singer that was from Scotland. He learned to treadle at his grandmother's knee. It is pretty much like yours except the thread length adjuster is opposite. Smallest stitches at the top. 😁

I own a 1936 treadle sewing machine it is much like yours I personally like using the treadle over the electric because it gives way better results because you are in full control my parents gave it to me as a Christmas present when i was a teenager that year my parents gave all the the children expensive presents for Christmas I got the soigné machine my brother got a real live cow which he sold to pay to go to Bible college with and my sister got a set of cross country skis which eventually got broken but I still have my sewing machine I make money off it by selling the things I make

@@24Washington hello im having a bit of a problem the machine no longer sews for some reason it doesnt stitch if i thread the bobbin it brings it up without a problem but thats it it no longer picks it up whilst sewing
You say "no longer sews" - have you known it to sew, and it just stopped? Or you've never been able to get it to sew for you?
Is your needle facing the correct way and inserted all the way?
Have you tried with a different bobbin?
My other thoughts would be:
Could it be a tension issue?
Could it be a timing issue?
If your needle is facing the correct way, make sure that the threads pull securely but not too tightly through the machine. You should be able to pull the threads by hand.
I would also suggest you open up the lower bobbin housing to see what happens to the upper and lower threads as the stitch is supposed to be forming. Use your hand on the wheel to slowly operate the machine with the presser foot up.
(I have another video showing how the lockstitch mechanism should work if you are not familiar with it.)
When you can see that the loose threads lock correctly, try holding the tails to the rear of the machine with a little bit of tension to see whether they still lock correctly.
You can also try with a thin strip of fabric with the bobbin cover open to repeat this.

The good thing then, is that a major mechanical issue is highly unlikely.
It is hopefully something very simple, but you just have to try several possibilities.
Maybe completely unthreading and then re-threading.
