  • Apples that are still hanging in edible shape on the trees in the winter time. I'm working on creating more super late hanging apples, so we can have a apples off the tree for more than half the year in some climates.

      The problem with that is just too much variation in everything from climate to tastes. I think it might make more sense if it were regional. Possibly one could eventually figure out a set of apples that are highly adaptable. I'd like to see frankentrees of my seedling varieties someday. that would be cool to offer. But we don't even know what does well where yet.

    Some excellent late varieties here - good to see you have assembled so many. No apples left on my trees in the UK - prolonged frosts a few days ago finished them off. Mere Pippin did quite well here but had to be picked in early Dec; good flavour, and Burford Yellow is very good again; last ones picked last week (10 Jan).

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I've never seen it cold enough here to freeze out apple fruits yet. I don't know what temp that requires, but apparently we don't see it. I think a lot of people would like Mere pippin well enough. They do tend toward banana though, which I never like. I would consider using it in further breeding possibly. It does hang fairly late, though here it is more of a December apple. Long season though and productive. I don't have Burford. I'm convinced I can have a selection of high quality dessert and cooking apples off the tree at this time of year and beyond. If I were to concentrate on just one goal, it might be that. Imagine the potential for year round markets without any storage.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I hear about a lot of disease problems, but disease pressure is light here due to a dry climate in the warm months. There is a solution to that problem, breed in disease resistance. A lot of progress has been made in disease resistance that can be taken advantage of by anyone. I use some disease resistance genes and think I have probably passed on scab resistance into a few apple lines. Going forward, those genetics can progress into more interesting apples.

    9:47: I had ordered a batch of scions from a small family orchard in Victoria (Australia), and when the a few of the varieties I ordered were not in I asked the owner to surprise me: I was given Pine Golden Pippin, and Grand'Mere, which the owner said was her French husband's favourites since he was a child.

      It is very rare, even among fruit collectors around there. I have been meaning to go out and try to find a clean scion. I know a place where Michael Maltas planted a tree. If I don't find that, we may never see virus free scions again. I have made a bunch of crosses with it in the past though. I planted some and sent out tons of seed crossed with very good winter apples, so there will probably be better apples soon that can be grown or used for further breeding. I can also collect and send out pollen. @@reppy

It may be that there will be fruits that can survive that little bit longer to get you into december, but we won't know until they are all planted and tested in those colder zones. Now that people know to pay attention and have this trait on their radar, there is a chance it will work out eventually. I'll ahve a few hauer scions this year when I list scion wood if you want to try it. I don't think it is a very good apple,b ut it has breeding potential.
