I’ve never been through being homeless and living out on the streets. But I really want to give everything I can to help. Like if I see someone slumming it on the streets, I pull a little money, get food and give it to them. People always tell me to “don’t give them money” “they’re only faking it”... but there’s a high chance that they aren’t. You know. It doesn’t hurt to just be vulnerable for a second if it mean you help someone in need. I feel like that prioritizes over being skeptical and niddy-griddy about that stuff. If they screw me, so be it.

As someone who worked with this population I have a tip.
Keep an unopened bottle of water on you. I always have several in my purse and car. When you come across someone who needs help, offer them that bottle of water and look at their face.
The real ones will smile at you and say thank you and take it.
The ones looking for their next fix will be very blasé about it or turn it down. You can tell the difference. So if the person is real, I see no problem with giving them a few bucks to eat or pay for a shower. If you get the feeling that they are not real, at the very least you gave them some water to help keep them alive. You seem to have a beautiful heart and mind and I applaud that. We need more people in this world willing to help a stranger in need
@@LaFlor718 - That was some truly outstanding advice. I am very much of the same mindset as Veronika - so your tip is really, really helpful. I'll tell you, there have been a couple of times where I have seen a homeless person on the side of the road with a sign, and a dog that they had laying down beside them.
I found it a bit odd the way they seemed to be a bit offended when I walked up to them with a bag of dog food and some bottles of water that I had just purchased for their dog, along with a sandwich that I had gotten for them. They would barely mumble a little thank you before they'd aggravatingly express how many bags of dog food they already received before mine - LOL.
But it sort of suggested to me that they were maybe using their dog as a tactic to gain more cash donations from sympathetic people who were passing by....? I don't know - but I think that your bottled water suggestion is an excellent way to help discern from those looking to get their next fix from those who genuinely need help. In all honesty - I'd give the very shirt off my back to help the latter - but helping someone to get their next fix is something I've always been worried about doing. So thank you, thank you!!! I’ve seen the guys with dogs (NYC born and raised) and they do play on people’s sympathy quite a bit. It sucks but it does happen and I do agree that some people use pets as a way to garner sympathy.
Here is a quick story. Years ago my sister and I got tons of boxes of cereal for almost free with coupons. We saw a homeless man and my sis offered him several boxes and he snubbed us. We were shocked teens. Told our mom later and she told us that the man was most likely an addict and didn’t really want food but wanted money. That hurt but our mom was quick to remind us that he doesn’t speak for every homeless person and to always be kind and help where we can.
The water thing came from a very heart breaking thing for me.
I was working in Brooklyn and I was the one that had the most violent offenders as my clients. These men were treated like less than cattle to the slaughter. I treated them all with respect and because I’m always thirsty I had a case of water in my office. So offered water to these men as an icebreaker. It’s odd. That simple gesture put them at ease and when I closed out their case on my end, they would always pop in and tell me how much things had improved and that my initial act of kindness changed their worldview. They thought I would see them as criminals and animals. I never did. I saw people that didn’t have the same advantage as myself or many others. I annoy everyone with my hippie shit, but I stand by it. We all need someone to talk to and lean on. Sometimes what you think is a small act of kindness can change another persons world for the better. ❤️
