The borzoi was created by breeding the saluki with an unknown breed of thick-coated Russian dog, probably selecting for crosses that leaned toward the saluki's traits to deliberately produce a winterized sighthound capable of extreme bursts of speed. The saluki is a basal breed, genetics cannot presently locate a point before the breed was started by humans, since in the case of dogs, the only "landrace" are straight up wolves, whereas with "housecats" some landraces are still obvious but hiding out in the popular culture as though they weren't, the Maine Coon and Russian Blue were not created by humans for example. But I degrees, the saluki was originally bred by the humans who founded the first agricultural societies in the Fertile Crescent, probably in what today is Iraq or Iran, where it is really quite hot, so high heat loss was heavily selected for in the saluki, either by nature or by it's designers (probably some combination). So, there was need for a FLUFFY version to use in Russia. The tsars apparently loved them, both in the old times (borzoi just means "fast dog", it's fancy name got lost) and more recently (1910's?) so they probably ARE in lots of creepy old paintings...somewhere. I know less about art than biology. I do know that rich people really liked to have paintings of themselves made though and tsars were apparently so rich it...caused some issues? Hehe.
