Just realised there's 2 versions of the c64 Defender of the Crown out there.
The version I played as a kid on my C64 was a pirated version that took 2 sides of a floppy. You had to turn the disk over after you had selected your character and spoken to Robin and about to start the game. Also, if you won the jousting tournament the victory shot of you sitting on your horse was corrupted and all you saw was a corrupted shot of 11:14. This version is out there to download and use in your emulator.
The version this video is from is a single file version of Defender of the Crown. No need to turn or swap the floppy files. Also, if you win the jousting tournament you get the uncorrupted shot at 12:58. You can get this version from gamebase64.
Also, this version is much easier than the two sided version. Once you buy a catapult you almost immediately get the quest to rescue a fellow Saxon lord's daughter and marry her and get that Saxon lord's castle and lands and 20 soldiers.
In the two sided version of the game you don't automatically get the quest to rescue a fellow Saxon lord's daughter after buying a catapult. Sometimes I had to wait 6 plus turns and sometimes I was never offered it after buying a catapult.
Plus the single-sided version loads much quicker.
Also, you can tell the difference by the splash screen that loads at the start that tells you who cracked the game. Single sided is Nostalgia and then loads into a cheat/trainer options. The two sided version is done by very well known Eagle Soft (has the pic of an eagle with a floppy disk in its beak)

This was probably the pinnacle in C64 games if you had a disk drive. It really showed off and utilised the hardware. Like other people have commented, the sound and music are really good and show the C64's superiority over the Spectrum and Amstrad CPC. The graphics are also a landmark for an 8 bit game making great use of the C64's palette.

Me and my big brother had this on disk for the C64 back in '87. I remember being in awe of the graphics at the time. We had an expert cartridge thingy as well which allowed you to copy 3 games onto one disk. Unfortunately it wasn't to last as the disk drive packed in after about 6 months, then it was back to tape loading, lol. Fond memories of reading ZZAP!64 magazine. The golden age of gaming.

The graphics are better on the Amiga (also as usual), but I don't find the game playable, while on the C64 I think it is. Additionally, as we see in this video the fair Saxon maidens...um...undress on the C64 version. ;) No big deal, of course, but it was kind of a notable, if visually underwhelming in its 8-bit glory, part of the game at the time. Based, loosely, on the tales of Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe and his attempts to bring King Richard back to England after his capture and imprisonment by Leopold of Austria. God you make this game look so easy. Was it this easy? I mean i remember beating it when i was a young kid, so i guess it couldn't have been terribly hard. But damn, like... you absolutely stomped them all lol.

I played the 2001 version, which is basic compared to the games of 2001, but there is the wind of adventure, except the fact that I was for the normans, of course ^^

GREAT GAME. I beat this one inside out. The key was to master the sword fighting on the raids.

      Oh those were easy:
      1) push joystick up (defend while advancing towards the enemy) and push the enemy all the way to the right
      2) press fire (attack) and then retreat _while holding fire_
The enemy will follow you, he gets hit and you don't. Just make sure you don't go all the way left or you'll 'escape'. Just repeat the above steps (push to the right, retreat to the left while holding fire).
Probably only works on the C64 version, though.

I have both versions, and this is indeed the better version, the Amiga version cheated, and did not have all the ammo options when laying seige to a castle. There was no posion to lob at the castle. The amiga version cheated by throwing in 250 knights sometimes, total cheat, I cry BS and turn it off. :) great fun on the C-64.

You can win this game fairly easily if you attack the nearest Norman lord (to the far east) with the help of Robin's men. If you suck at tournament, just choose 'fame' always. If you practice, raiding enemy castles can be much more rewarding, literally. Important: if you're defending a former enemy castle, *never retreat.* It's better to fight to the last man because you'll lose your entire army anyway. So best option would be to not defend conquered castles.

Maybe because the magic is gone?
You remember how exciting new games were, you read about them in your favourite magazines, maybe you got some new games or hardware for xmas, every computer or console was a mystery box filled with magic.
Now your knowledge has expanded and you know a C64 is just a bundle of IC's, 64K isn't very much, and 16 colors can only do so much.
Your phone is a 1000 times better than any 80s computer, and when a new phone or computer or console sees the light of day you know all the specs and it isn't magic anymore.
No more magic, no more romance.
I used to hack games on my trusty MSX2 computer to make them load faster. I was good at that. Nowadays you can download everything from the internet. My skills are completely useless and I miss the days when they mattered.
I love those 80s machines and I have quite a lot of them, but it's a bittersweet love. It will never ever be the same again. Those days are over. They will not come back.
Maybe that's why you feel sad.

Lol, my C64 version was sightly different. All enemy castles had a starting 200 soldiers garrison but my. So my only chance to win was the marriage, because I could get my father-in-law's 200 men too. Sometimes I had to attack the target castle more than 2x in a row and just throw diseaster and greek fires to them and let Robin's army die before my charge and I just retreat with minor losses and repeat until the enemy defenders would be reduced under 100...
This play is very easy compared with my very hard version.

I had this game. More tedious than fun. Thankfully I didn't buy the game. I had an acquaintance that worked at Software Etc. that unloaded a lot of freebies that were given to the store that they couldn't use for the store computer since it wasn't an Amiga- so he let me have this (among other games).
