I apologize in advance, but this is for the migraine sufferers out there - and it’s LONG! But it’s what banished mine after 40-45 years of living with crippling headaches. I wish I’d found this when I was young!
Try eating strict keto. I had cluster and chronic migraines (ones that are long-lasting - my longest was MONTHS but most of my chronic were 7-10 days) for my whole life. I started having lots of headaches as a child and they got progressively worse over time. They settled into Classics in my teens and I started with Clusters when I was in my mid-20s. By my 30s I had pretty well all Clusters with just occasional Classics, but at least 1 a week and usually 2-3. Then in my early 40s, the Classics stopped and I started with Chronics along with my Clusters. I tell you all of this so you’ll understand how serious things were. Working was nearly impossible with such severe and long-lasting headaches.
Then I started eating very low carb around age 50. I ate 50 grams of carbs a day or less and it helped! My headaches became less frequent and more easily controlled by the meds. It helped so much, in fact, that I went full, very strict keto before keto was a thing, about 13 years ago. After a few months - maybe 3? - they were dramatically reduced to maybe 3 or 4 migraines a year. And they were less intense and shorter duration of only a few days. By 9 months in, no more migraines! It was like a miracle! Over the years I’d have maybe 1 every couple of years depending on extreme stress, etc. Then COVID hit and, like everyone else, my eating habits went straight downhill. The migraines stayed away for a good 9 or 10 months then found me again. I had been loosely watching carbs so probably eating about 75-100 a day some days and 50-75 on others and the headaches were creeping back in. The minute I gave myself a hard shake and went back to keto? No headaches.
So try STRICT keto and get your labs done for all vitamin and mineral levels plus your ferritin (the best way to measure iron) level. Take what’s needed to bring your levels to optimum and then take whatever you need to keep them there. It’s important and I think that’s another part of what works with keeping the migraines at bay. Get your levels run every 6 months to be sure you’re where you need to be.
