- I'd like to introduce my son Charlie, in this very special film “Travels with Charlie: In search of B.C. Coho salmon.” My eleven year-old Charlie Moen makes his debut on film with a trip into British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest in search of Coho salmon on the fly. Born into fly fishing, this young boy finds big fish on the rivers feeding Kimsquit Bay. Led by Jeff Hickman, guide and owner of Fish the Swing and Kimsquit Bay Lodge, Charlie finds classic high-action hookups, gorgeous aerial shots and plenty of chrome.
“Travels with Charlie” is an uplifting story of a boy’s perspective on fishing and working with his filmmaking father in a coming-of-age adventure. Orcas and whales, eagles and bears…this is the quintessential B.C. It captivates even the seasoned angler with its reminder of humble and exciting beginnings into the sport of fly fishing. With much pride and a whole lot of nostalgia, we present to you a very special film starring the next generation of Catch Magazine.

Hello young lad. Im 60 year old, and from Denmark. I have never catch a salmon in my life. But when i se You and Your happines, when You are fishing, I'w let me be inspiret. So now i will planen buy gear and find out where i can catch my first salmon. So tank You, for Your video. It is not too latent, to Lean to fish :-)
One of my favorites to date. Some of the emotions displayed; unbelievable. That hook to the lip was cinematic gold.

Thanks so much Tony. I love how you described that. It’s just perfect cinematic gold. Will never happen again like that. Lucky I was there at that moment to capture it as tight as I could. Charlie was so tired at that point he was using both hands to cast the single hand rod. Haha

The look on his face when he hooked that coho from the log is awesome! Taking my nephews fishing with me the last few years has been one of the best experiences of my life. Passing it down to the next generation is what it is all about and seeing the passion in their eyes is priceless!
Thanks. Yes, that facial expression is just unbelievable. I think most kids would would have that same reaction. I guess I was just so lucky I was zoomed in and tight on Charlie to capture it all that way. I really can't believe that all happened!

crazy how the memories came back to me about my fishing at that age with my dad. Didn't matter that I was catching brookies in the colorado high country instead of big cohos. The experience with my dad at that age is irreplaceable. i enjoyed this video as much as any as it brought those memories back so vividly. Great job!!

Thanks. Thing about Charlie is that he gets it that fishing might not ever be this good ever again. He’s seen me come home from work trips far to often saying the fishing was super tough.

There is nothing finer that steelheading with my boys 10 and 13. Seeing their Spey casts improve with each trip. Great memories and more to come! We haven’t seen that many fish on the Clearwater this year though. I still wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Yes, the stars aligned on this one. Trips don't always go that way but luckily a lot of though was put into when and where I should take Charlie on his first film trip. That said, I was totally rolling the dice with the outcome of this fishing trip.
