In 1967, after the World Boxing Association stripped Muhammad Ali of the title for refusing to be inducted into the U.S. military, Bonavena participated in that sanctioning body's 1967 tournament to crown a new heavyweight champion.Mildenberger, ranked No. 1 by the WBA and No. 2 by The Ring magazine, is weaponless and defenseless. Bonavena just looks ferocious and, besides being a boor out of the ring, he is an unpardonable bore in the ring.
Bonavena knocked him down with a short left hook in the first round, but he was not hurt badly. Mildenberger was cut on the corner of his right eye in the second, and in the third he slipped and Bonavena raked his head with his heavy hands while he was down. Mildenberger was down again and almost through the ropes in the fourth, this time from another left hook, but no one did any counting. Bonavena lost a point in the fifth for punching low, but even with that Mildenberger could only gain an even round. A right by Bonavena in the seventh over a right hand lead dropped Mildenberger again, this time to one knee.
"God, will somebody please do some counting," Krause screamed.....
Mildenberger was defeated during the tournament’s first round following a convincing victory from Argentina’s Oscar Bonavena.

Bonavena was on the level of Quarry and Chuvalo. A level below championship level but fans always knew they would give a good effort

He fought 68 fights in just 12 years that’s 5 1/2 fights per year all by the age of just 33 sheesh that jus show his durability drive and will took on any challenge and gave his all every time… Rip Ringo

Oscar dropped him with a nice short left hook in some tight guarters there!

I used to turn the sound off whenever Cosell was talking prior to the fight.

I was a teenager when this elimination bout took place between Karl and Oscar. I'm 68 now, but I remember this fight was like yesterday. Being a big fan of Karl Mildenberger, I was rooting for him to win this fight and advance to the next heavyweight winner. Of course the fight, with 4-seperate knockdowns of Mildenberger, spread out during the 12-round fight insured a victory for Bonavena. The German crowd at Frankfurt were cheering for the hometown hero and at the end of the 9th round he gave us, his fans, our biggest thrill, when he nailed Oscar with a straight left, staggering Bonavena. I remember jumping straight up in the air in joy, as Milde pressed hard to finish Bonavena off. This came with less than 30-seconds left in the round, a little earlier, the fight may have turned out different. Karl was a game fighter in this fight, and in all his other fights. A gentleman in the ring and outside it. Never ever acting like a big mouth fool, but conducting himself with respect for his opponent and the fans. He was admired by many Germans, and a few Americans, like myself. We cheered for this German southpaw anytime we could get one of his fights on the TV. We wanted him to win so badly and give boxing a return to the days of fighters shaking hands and hugging after their knock drag out with each other. Floyd Patterson had these qualities, and it endeared him to many boxing fans. Even though Karl was down 4-times, he always got back up, and then proceed to give a good account of himself. Were not for the knockdowns, this fight could have been Karl's. Thank you for this video of my boxing hero, from the 60's.

    Milia was a poser...
Good right jab and nice straight left hand but he posed much too much therefore he rarely got it off, the straight left hand. Not enough jabbing to compensate for the low volume of left hands thrown...and he was just much too easy to knockdown. Guy had bits and pieces of ability but his lack of output made him ineffective.

So Karl is bragging about getting dropped in the 10th round with Ali and having both his eyes battered and then having the ref call the match in the 12th when he couldn't stand to see the hometown hero get embarrassed and knocked silly?
I guess spin was alive and well in the 1960s.
But then again, it is Germany!
