    My Dad was a Sergeant in-flight mechanic/engineer and sometimes gunner in 458 Bomber Squadron in the middle east. We were lucky - he did come home to Australia. He never liked to talk about it as it affected him, but it did give him a lifetime love of small aircraft aviation in the Pacific islands, where he traveled a lot into remote areas. Fantastic to see this video.

    Background information: Vickers Wellington Mk. ICs of RAF No. 99 Squadron vs. a rotte of Bf 109 F-4 Trop Is led by Oberleutnant Karl-Wolfgang Redlich with I./JG 27, then located at Gazala, North Africa, 1941.

    Great video. A friend of mine is an ex Wellington pilot, Wing Commander Ken Wallis, who crashed a few of these in his time. He hit a barrage balloon once and the cable sawed most of the way through the wing, and fuel lines. Still got it down though. Amazingly strong.

    One of the least known facts about the Wellington is that it could acommodate much larger bombs than the US B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-24 Liberator, like the 4000 lb "cookie" Type HC 4000 LB, first carried by the Welliongton mark B.II version

    In WWII footage the bombs impact the ground randomly. In the game they hit in a straight line. They should work on bomb physics.

    @wilmanric2277 Před 9 lety +12

    The Brits tried something like this in autumn 1939; sent a bunch of Wimpies to look for targets near Heligoland in daylight, testing the idea that bombers with power-operated gun turrets flying in close formation could protect themselves against fighters. Epic Fail.
    They were attacked by 109's and 100's and almost all were shot down or heavily damaged. Check out "The Battle of the Heligoland Bight" for details.
    In defence of the theorists,when these tactics were developed most fighters were armed with only two rifle-calibre machineguns, and against that a bomber with two such weapons in a turret was at a much less disadvantage than against the cannon-armed fighters that were in service in WW2. One of my uncles flew Hampdens, Wellingtons, and Halifaxes during the War. He said they loved the Wellingtons for a lot of reasons; sadly, I can't remember most of them now. I think it was very popular with its crews.

      my Grandfather & a few Uncles were in WW2, one of them was a nav. & gunner in B-25's and yeah, not much defense against fighter planes even with alot of guns/turrets, tough heroic times !

    • @canuckster24
      @canuckster24 Před 4 lety

      Because it took a lot more to shoot one down because of the structure of the body. Same reason why the B-17 is regarded more highly than the B-24, B-24 had greater numbers and greater bomb load, but the B-17's survivability was far greater than a B-24.

      Back in the 1970s I read the operational diary for 9 Squadron. It describes the attacks on Kiel and Heligoland. In the first 2 daylight raids the Me 110s flew alongside the Wellingtons and shot many down: the aircraft had no side armament. 9 Squadron lost most of its peacetime aircrew in this manner.

    When the Brits claim they had no military answer to the invasion of Poland by Germany, they tend to convieniently forget that the Wellington bomber was already deployed to the RAF in 1939.
    The Wellington bomber was the aircraft used in 1940 to bomb Berlin* as payback for the inadvertent bombing of London by a damaged Luftwaffe bomber.
    No, in itself would not have stopped the combined Soviet-German invasion but as there were few divisions protecting the western front while Berlin was burning..

  • @Arcon1337
    @Arcon1337 Před 13 lety

    Just a little nitpick. Planes don't dive head first when landing. The nose would be angled up pretty high, even untill it touches down.

  • @Miatacrosser
    @Miatacrosser Před 12 lety

    Thanks. I thought so. I built the Airfix 1/72nd kit back in 60's.
    In commenting on the game I found the graphics very nice, the action interesting, but the scenario a little odd. I thought British bombers only flew at night. I know this is a game and the scenes can be set up anyway you like, but I always thought that British bombers were poorly defended, especially mediums like the Wellington, for daylight action. Exceptions to this might be some of their heavies and of course the Mosquito

    @Arcon1337 Granted the approach angle is pretty steep on this video. Not all airplanes land like larger jets. These larger jets (ex. 737, a320, and some larger business jets) have leading edge flaps on the front of the wings. These kind of flaps enable jets to approach the runway with a higher angle of attack by changing the chord line of the wing. If you would like more information you should Wikipedia "aircraft flaps".

    Il2 1496 with mods and all patches is rly amazeing. Its not that much advanced like cliffs of dover, cause cliffs of dover is rly a sim, there you can click almost every button in the cockpit, its 90% realistic compared to real life, damage model is wonderfull...its worth every cent! just like il2 strumovik 1946!
    But Il2 1946 is cheap, you have more planes to fly, patch it, get ultra mod (for example) and you will be happy with it.
