- Scott Toy Guru Neitlich from Spector Creative dives into the secret origin of Trap Jaw. His connection to Big Jim, his original appearance as X Man and why his toy is so much better vs. every other MOTU toy!
I find TrapJaw/Kronus' story compelling. Its amazing how he started to think for himself, rebelled against his leader, he tried to bring him down, just to end up being chewed up and spitted out by him. And now, out of humiliation and insecurity, he has to follow him eternally, since his quasi alpha status has been eradicated altogether.
This is what I call great story telling. Thank you for another amazing video.
Well glad you enjoyed! Feel free to share, it helps the channel a ton
Trap Jaw. Providing a nickname for kids with braces throughout the 80s.
Thanks, you bastard, but I love you anyway 😁
Its a living
He is fascinating because he carries a lot of body-horror and gory elements with him. I will always remember his origin story in the german audio tapes where he was an ordinary farmer who was saving a child from skeletor, who had the child bound on railway tracks and came driving towards it on a train and mutilated the now known Trap Jaw and decided to create a new henchman from what was left of him!
Yeah so much in a 5 inch toy!
how did he lose his arm??
"I could write a book about what you dont know", Skeletor to Trap Jaw: Lou S's voice, probable one Skeletor's best Zingers.
He is good with the lines
In Germany we had a series of radio plays and in that Trap Jaw has another story, I'll translate it from a fansite with Google translator.
The Bodyguard of Evil Trap Jaw has two different backstories. One is told in the mini comic "The Menace of Trap Jaw". Here Trap Jaw is a dangerous criminal on another world. By chance, Trap Jaw arrives in Eternia and is able to acquire the mysterious powers of Castle Grayskull. But He-Man and Skeletor can work together to prevent the worst, and Skeletor takes Trap Jaw with him. In the radio play "The Level of Eternity" the second background story is told in a strange way. Orko falls into a trance and learns the true story of Trap Jaw. Here, who was once on the side of the good, armorer Jaw freed a little boy. But when attempting to rescue him, he is caught by the skeleton tank and seriously injured. Skeletor takes Trap Jaw under his wing and replaces Trap Jaw's right arm and jaw, and has given him a hearing wash. His special abilities lie particularly in his right arm, which he can replace with various weapon prostheses. Trap Jaw has a particularly diverse arsenal of weapons, especially in the cartoon episodes. With his steel jaw he can crack all metals and "hard nuts". Trap Jaw is one of the most loyal followers of Skeletor and is loyal to his master. In addition, Trap Jaw is often at work as a technician for Skeletor.
Yes! Can confirm the good trap jaw gets crushed by a tank while saving a child story!
I really should do a video on all these differences
i would be very happy about that. but it will be a very difficult task. if my english wasn't so bad i would offer myself for it. the german radio plays were "masterpieces" spoken by some of the best dubre speakers in germany and the radio plays are unmatched nowadays .... the radio plays were already for the adult level at that time and i still shudder when i listen to them. if you want to do it then look for a real He-man fan (not like Kevin Smith) who speaks German and English fluently and knows the radio plays. I would love it
Just a question , with "radio play" do you mean the cassette series made by EUROPA ?
@@paluxyl.8682 yes exactly the google translator has "Hörspiele" translated with "radio plays"
It was with Trap-Jaw that suddenly my mother thought MOTU was cool. Trap-Jaw was the first one she saw on a peg and picked up without us having to ask for it because she thought he looked cool. She actually bought two of them -- one for me and one for my brother which was rare. After that she was paying more attention to the new figures and picking up anything that she thought looked cool without us having to ask. All thanks to Trap-Jaw.
He does just look that cool
These Motu vids keep getn better and better!!
Well thank you so much! All made with love. Tell your friends!
Trap Jaw has always been my favorite MOTU character. Loved when they added the Kronos back story and how he didn’t like who Keldor became as Skeletor and tried to overthrow him only to fail. And that another one of my favorites, Tri-Klops assisted in repairing him as Trap Jaw. And the Iron Jaw idea is very cool. Since it is quite a few differences between us 2 versions as well as unique backstories
Yeah he just keeps getting cooler
I love how you admit when you made different variations of characters for the sake of profit, but also just like to give lots of homages to the Masters of the Universe franchise. It's very fun to hear your stories from working with the brand 😁
Well everything I did was to sell toys! It was my job. ;-P
@@spectorcreative1872 I know, I just appreciate the good balance between profits and creativity you have
First rule of business: stay in business. In this case, profits mean you get to keep making more and cooler toys. No profits mean you have to scrap a line and start staging another from scratch- which I’d imagine is harder and often less fun. ;-)
I always pretended that Trap Jaw and Tri-Klops were Eternia soldiers injured in battle that were rebuilt by Man-at-Arms and eager for revenge at what he did to them. That might have been a cool story. Thanks for the awesome video!
Head cannon can be the best stories!
I prefer this to the one depicted in the video.
What timing! Just as I was binging your most excellent videos anyway!
Well thank you! And big fan of your channel as well BTW Midnight. I watch your videos all the time.

Trap Jaw also had an alternative origin in the german audio cassettes from the 80s! He was a weaponsmith named Jaw (not very creative with the naming here). One day Skeletor drove with a tracked vehicle (Landshark?) trough his village and was about to run a child over that was standing in the middle of the road. The weaponsmith saved the child but lost his arm and jaw in the process. Skeletor took the remains and put cybernetic enhancments on him - including a microchip in his brain that makes him obedient to Skeletor! Very gruesome - but not as terrifying as Beast Mans origin story.
Good point!
Okay, almost afraid to ask -- what was that origin of Beast Man's?
@@TitularHeroine Beast Man was the the smartest scientist of his race. When he uncovered an ancient stone tablet and realized it actually was an instruction for a machine to melt the pole caps, he altered the plans, rendering the machine useless. When Skeletor found out about the machine, he tortured Beast Man over a long period of time - without success. As a final step Skeletor messed with his brain - turning him into a loyal, but stupid subject without any memories. (The audio of the torture was really terrifying!)
Webstor found out about this, and told Beast Man about it - tragically, he didn't understand it.
Skeletor: "Beast Man, you are a fool! Which, however, I am not entirely innocent of."
(Years later, Skeletor succeded in building the machine and that's what the episode was about!)
@@derheadbanger9039 Holy cow! That is intense! Those stories sound amazing (and poor guy!). And Skeletor sounds so much more evil and sinister in these.
@@TitularHeroine Yes, he is - and he even sounds threatening. The audio tapes were what I grew up with and where my nostalgia lies. Unfortunately the stories are riddled with plotholes and inconsistencies. But the voice acting, atmosphere and music is top notch most of the time. These are the voices I hear in my mind when reading the comics etc.
Very good. I never knew how he ended up like that, but he's always been one of my favorite MOTU villains.
He is a big favorite
@@spectorcreative1872 is there a known origin for Evil Lyn? I would be interested in her origin as well...
Trap Jaw is my 'toy collector foil'. I've just never had any luck with that figure. I drove my parents crazy to get the original toy, and he was probably the hardest MOTU figure I ever got, and I managed to get Mosquitor much later.
When I finally managed to get my Trap jaw, he no longer featured the 'glow in the dark' ring, or mine didn't include it for some reason. But I got him home, and was SO happy to have him. I was playing with my MOTU figures, when a neighbor came over, same age as me, and started playing with me. He told me he learned a cool trick you can do with 'he-man figures', and he took Trapjaw, and started spinning his legs, with the rubber piece making the legs spin back to the original position. He kep doing it, saying that if you really wind them up, they spin like a helicopter. Well, he kept doing it until the rubber piece snapped, breaking the figure. He said he can fix it, but he wanted to show me the trick, so he did it to the other leg, before I could stop him. So, I didn't even have the toy 1 day, and it was broken. Needless to say, this experience changed the way I 'played' with toys, or let others handle them. Somewhat traumatizing, for sure.
My dad ended up returning it to the store, claiming it was broken in the packaging, and got his money back, but we never found another 'new' or 'complete' trap jaw. I managed to find one at a 'garage' sale years later, but the loop on his helmet was broken, he only had the 'claw' attachment, and he was missing his belt.
I didn't know about MOTUC until after Trap Jaw was released, and his price on the secondary markets soared, so I haven't really gotten a chance to get him there, either. Still an awesome character. And thanks for your contributions to his portrayal and development.
A lot of kids had encounters with destructive little shits like that neighbor kid.
You are definitely not alone in this
Back in the 80's my cousin and I made a Zipline for my Trap Jaw figure that was so long that the string wore through the loop on the figure's head.
Always wondered if The Bezerkers from ThunderCats were inspired by Trap Jaw?
I wouldn't put it past them
@@spectorcreative1872 Haha :D
Yeah they all sported some kind of arm or body attachment like TJ! Especially Hammer Hand!
I could easily imagine that they were.
LARRY!! HELLLLOOO YOUUUU!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
The only toy that I had that crossed franchise and always wins. He went against Transformers, GI Goes, Hulk, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Shogun Warriors etc ...
What a Great Toy!!
He had that super power all right
My Mego Hulk had a number of scraps with Trap Jaw as well.
@@RisingBean i bet that those flights were epic!!
Because of this channel, I am back on motu. Love your videos, Can’t wait to watch all of them. Keep um comin!!!!
Nice. MOTU needs all the fans it can get
Jaw was a kind man who worked as am armourer. Once he saw a little boy chained on a street while a tank was approaching to run over the kid. Jaw managed to free the boy just in time but the tank hit him, tearing of his arm and crushing his jaw. The driver of the tank, Skeletor, decided to give Jaw a new jaw of steel and a weapons arm. He also reprogrammed Jaw's brain, making him his slave and bodyguard.
Yes the German audio drama had a cool backstory
the wisdom teeth on that X-ray, ouch....
I know right!
I had a radio play on audio casette from Masters where in a vision of the past a man saves a boy from a tank. And Skeletor taunting the wounded telling him he will make him his servant and call him trapjaw.
That was pretty grim but also a cool origin story.
Oh yes, the German radio play was very different.
Good to see MOTU getting so much well deserved love! Keep it up! :)
The brand deserves it!
Trap Jaw is the Boba Fett of MOTU
Very much so.
Thank you for the origins of my favorite MOTU villain, Scott! Trap Jaw is an extremely interesting character, he has many accessories and a very "toyetic" figure.
One of the best toys ever
In the german MotU Audio Cassettes from the 80s there was also an origin story of Trap Jaw... There he was once the Weapon-Engineer "Joe" who was traveling around Eternia. And he was badly wounded during the rescue of a tied up Kid while Skeletor was just destroying that Village with a Tank like Vehicle... And when Skeletor realised that he just drove over Joe he thought that this is a good opportunity for a new useful Fighter and made him into Trap Jaw. :-) I loved this origin Story very much as a Kid and still do :-)
Oh yes, a very different continuity to be sure
@@spectorcreative1872 For me and my friends where these Audio Cassettes much more important then the TV Show! And because of this i had to collect the classics figure of „Anti-Eternia He-Man“!!! This Story was/is my most favourite one and as a Kid it even quite scared me! :-)
Another excellent video! I loved the new Trap Jaw/Kronis from the Classics line. He is very expensive, though (and the original mini-comic appearance more so!) If classics ever returned, I would definitely be down for a Fisto/Trap Jaw two pack!
Hoping Mattel brings them back!
A MOTU Classics Trap Jaw would be awesome to get, they are so expensive to get now...
Oh well, at least I got my Origins Trap Jaw for now and hope they make a Masterverse one of him.
Still hoping Mattel brings them back
@@spectorcreative1872 if they still have the molds, I'd be all over buying that reissued line. ... and the mini snake mountain which never got released due to funding. :(
My mini's grayskull NEEDS its counterpart!
Keep them coming! This video made my day! Do Extendar, Sy-Klone or Clamp-Champ next please!
All are coming!
In the german masters audiobook from the 80s, the story of trapjaw was, that he got smashed and lost his arm and jaw by a tank, when he wanted to save a little boy from getting killed by skeletor. Skeletor took the wounded to his lab, gave him an robot arm, new jaw, and manipulatet his brain to evil.
Yupo, the German Audio is a while other canon!
Trap Jaw is my favorite MOTU character and action figure of all time. He was the toy that I would carry around as a kid (along with some string) whenever mom would drag me to somewhere I didn't want to go like the doctor's office, dentist, clothes shopping, etc.
You are not alone in that favorite character choice!
This was one of my favorite He-Man toys. Those interchangeable arms were so cool. I loved putting the laser blaster on. I think it was just before the time of Metroid that also had the iconic blaster arm.
Oh yes he tops many lists!
I always thought Trap-Jaw replaced his jaw and arm on purpose so he could become the "Wizard of Weapons" which is how he was labeled on the branding. Mattel called him the Wizard of weapons from the very earliest days. He did this because he was an insane criminal who wanted to be more powerful than his original form. The retcon of it being an the result of an injury makes Trap-Jaw into more of a sympathetic bad guy. The original was a being who lost his humanity in a deliberate attempt to become more powerful and became a mechanical Frankenstein.
And now you know!
I too like him more as skeletors “tech” guy. Kind of an evil counter to man at arms. The kind of gav3 that role to triclops in the 2002 series so ican see why they had to come up with something else for trapjaw
@@spectorcreative1872 The character was more interesting in not knowing.

Nice! Will try to do more like this
Excellent sir. I am all about back stories. I go so far as to create back stories for my LEGO characters from the themed City sets. Some are the same character, crossed over.
The time and attention it takes to do this by big toy companies is always appreciated. It's something LEGO does not do as often as I feel they should, but it also can limit imagination so I see why they don't.
Oh Lego is a great imagination gateway toy
Trap Jaw was my first MOTU figure way back in the 80's along with Beastman and Fakkor
A great first figure
Fun Fact from Germany. In the 80s we had official radio plays on MC, don't know if they were 1:1 identical with other countries but there's another origin story of Trap Jaw.
There he was once a weapon engineer seing a child traped in the way of a tank driven by Skeletor. Though he was able to save the child, he suffered sever wounds on shoulder/arm and head.
As Skeletor stepped out seing the wounded man he said (more or less good translated): "This is the weapon engineer Jaw. He has been wounded. But that doesn't matter. I will fix that Jaw. I will give you a jaw made of steel and a new shoulder. From now on you will work for me. Because I will reprogram your mind. Your right arm will become your fighting arm, I will call you Trap Jaw. You will become my slave and bodyguard. Trap Jaw, the mightiest warrior of Skeletor."
Oh yes, and thanks to the Masterverse this a legit different He-Man universe
Iron Jaw for the win!! Thank you so much for this video.
Loved the minicomic that came packaged with Trapjaw in the '80s. For my 6-year old self, his (and Triclops) minicomic triggered fear for the welfare of the heroic warriors. Loved it then; still love it now.
Now we need an official Iron Jaw figure
Ah, Trapjaw. One of the great toys I always wanted but never got...like Snake Mountain, the Gi Joe Tank, and the Yellow Lego Castle....
He certainly was!!
Tri-Klops was tasked by Keldor/Skeletor to fix-up Kronus. Now do Tri-Klops' origins. His ghastly, hard-wired, eye apparatus revealed in the 200X cartoon was a shocker! Thanks for your expertise & covering these topics 👍.
Glad you enjoyed! Any topic suggestions are also always welcome!
Very interesting!
The best stories are!
Thanks for the education sir!👍🏼💪That must have been cool working for a well established Toyline! Subbed and Liked!
Welcome to the channel, great to have you.
I completely forgot about that glow-in-the-dark ring with the secret compartment, I used to wear it to school along with my talking watch from RadioShack.
One cool pack in
Thanks again for another informative video. Always wondered about some of these backstories and the Iron Jaw character.
And knowing is half the knowing
I always found it interesting that James Bond's Jaws was filling a slot which had once been occupied by the guy who wanted to kill Jaws the shark, in the beloved romantic comedy, Must Love Jaws.
Regarding trapjaw, I found it interesting that no Eternian scientist could ever give him a more dexterous hand to work with.
Well he refused to go see Mo-Larr
Interesting lineage there to Big Jim. That's a cool toy line in toy history...would like to learn more about that one. Your videos are really excellent. Thanks.
I do have a whole video on big Jim here: czcams.com/video/g4W1r_TAs5M/video.html
“THA-BOOOMMM!” Possibly the greatest comic book sound effect ever created. Kind of weird seeing it representing a laser blast though.
I like Thakkadoom myself
Robot Chicken has a good explanation on what happened to Trap Jaw and it involves Orko.
I do love me some Chinese food
This is great, I really like how creepy some of the variations are of this character.
Truly!
In the 80ies there was a german he man Radio play which tells a different Story about trap jaw. Im pretty sure this is not canon but in this Story trap jaw was a regular guy who was wandering in the forest. He heard a child crying for help. He found a little boy tied up and saw a tank driving in the boys direction. He saved the boy but got ran over by the tank getting horribly injured. The tank stopped. Skeletor who was driving the tank took the injured man and made him trap jaw.
The disturbing thing about this Story isnt the fact that trap jaw was a nice guy before He was pancaked by a tank. The disturbing part is that skeletor kills innocent children with a tank in his free time
Oh yes, a very different continuity all together
I collect both MOTU Origins and MOTWWEU... I love how in the WWE line they used The Fiend Bray Wyatt as their Trap Jaw... Articulated jaw, swappable weapons to replace hands, and a loop through his hair reminiscent of the loop in Trappy's helmet.
It is very innovative!
This is one instance where I really like the different looks being other characters. I couldn't fit the all green look into my head canon, but if he's a different character, it works great. Question: was his name going to be "Iron Jaw" in classics, as well?
If we got to the mini comic version (which was released at power con by super 7) yes.
Trap Jaw - The Boba Fett of the MOTU line.
Can’t argue with that
Good job man.
Many thanks!
Great reference to Robert Kirkman, these days he’s is best known for co-creating The Walking Dead and Invincible.
Well yes those would be his big ones ;-P

That is how 200X went
Awesome Video!,I just bought the 2-pack Action figures Keldor and Cronus
A cool pack to own and easy to get now!
The German MOTU Audio Dramas - from the 80ties - made up their own Origins:
Trap Jaw was here the engineer Joe of the Royal Guard, who got horrifically injured by saving a child from Skeletor, who was joyriding a tank. Skeletor in his infinite compassion saw the chance to get a free crony (see Kronis) and rebuild him as a cyborg. The German Audio dramas were weird, yet entertaining.
Oh yes that is a whole other canon!
Great Video ⭐️💯
My many thanks! Pass it along if you can!
It always creeped me out on how Trap Jaw became a literal ' Frankenstein' monster with his jaw and arms!
Oh yes. Creepy it is
I liked how the 200X series explored Trapjaw's transformation into a cyborg (like they did w/ Keldor's shift into Skeletor). The MOTUC fig having accessories to make him "2 characters in one" was a very novel idea. I hope Trapjaw gets a bit more shine in the upcoming "Revelations" series.
Oh more screen time means more Trapjaw
The minicomic versions are almost universally better than the cartoon versions.
Oh you are not alone in that!
It's a crime how Filmation depicted Trap Jaw.
Beware his deadly fly swatter
@@spectorcreative1872 Well, I can always let Orko drop a few eggs on it.
Hey scott, have you ever listened to the German Masters of the Universe audioplays? They had a ton of original stories and one of them is the origin for Anti-Eternia and Anti-Heman.
They also had their own take on Trap Jaw's origins: He was a brave villager who saved a child from being run over by a tank Skeletor's forces used to attack the village. His right arm and jaw were crushed. As a "reward" for his good deed, Skeletor warped his mind and body into his newest servant.
I have not. I don't speak German only French and ancient Egyptian
@@spectorcreative1872 Fear not, this site has English descriptions and sometimes even transcriptions for them: www.he-man.org/audio/ There's even an alternate origin for Skeletor as the embodiment of all evil that an ancient Eternian race shed before leaving Eternia and their creation behind.
Thanks for another great video.

Easily one of my favourite MOTU characters, and always one of the best values for money in any MOTU line he appears in. Love that comic book backstory for him, too!
The only problem with that loop on his helmet is that extended use will cut through the plastic, eventually. I'm thinking of sinking an eyelet screw into the helmet, for sturdiness.
Really, you broke the helmet loop?
@@spectorcreative1872 No, but I've seen it in other samples, so I was thinking of taking preventative measures.
@@Beedo_Sookcool You mean the cord eventually sawed through the hoop (the way, say, a necklace chain will cut a pendant bail over time) or that the weight of the figure, being too heavy, eventually snaps the hoop off? I guess the effect is kinda the same but the process is different.

I clearly remember getting Trap Jaw as a kid and his legs fell right out of the package. My dad took a Polaroid picture and then got the refund. My parents wrote Mattel a letter and included the picture. About 8 weeks later I get a box in the mail. In it was a new Trap Jaw figure and Wundar still bagged. I still have the letter Mattel sent, Trap Jaw and Wundar. The letter explained I was getting a “motu figure not available in any store” and my intended figure. So when that Wonderbread myth started, I knew it was wrong. I always assumed it was a “customer service promo” until your excellent figure.
Back to Trap Jaw. When I got that package in, I was so happy. Honestly, Wundar was more exciting to me. I had some good playground bragging. Hey Scott, do you have an extra classics Wundar?
Now that ain't good quality control!

Well thank you! Share if you can
I got my Rise of Evil with Kronis two-pack last week and v2 Evil-Lynn is in the mail!
Fantastic! Keep supporting motu
I never fully understood the play value of the loop on Trap Jaw's head. A hook, sure, but a loop? He zips down a line to join a battle (or to quickly escape), but wait, he needs to stop to unthread the line first... would have been easier to use his hook arm attachment instead.
Well yeah. Zip lines are tight
The ring on the helm always confused me. So he can zip line with it. But now all that weight is supported by his head, and there’s no way to detach from the line without cutting or untying it. I guess he lost his jaw because of a failed zip line action, where he fell, and the helmet’s chin strap tore off his mandible when he fell.
Because its a toy
Ha!
The loop on top of Trap Jaw's helmet is a custom made and modified heavy duty swivel style bolt snap/dog leash clip. That's the only way he can zip line without any issues at all while using his mechanical arm to help guide him as he slides down or across it.
He-Man is definitely a universe that one should not wonder these questions, like origin stories, the “whys” and “motivations”, etc….
Just let the Art flow over you, don’t think too hard, else this universe of greyskull home, will fall apart.
Lol
And that is why we have a Masterverse!

If you were at Mattel long enough to release Iron Jaw, what differences would you have made other than establishing that him and Trapjaw are two different character? Would you have went with a more 200X look when it came to his head and cybernetics arms or would it look similar to what Super7 had released with a cartoony-looking head resembling MOTUC trapjaw, but with the elongated ear guards?
Would have made him as close to the mini comic appearance as possible, which I think super 7 did
Will you do more?

I can see that
Trap Jaw is not a friend of mine. There are a lot of Masters I like more. But you`re right, he is iconic for the brand.

I sort of get the feeling Mattel is doing everything in their power to demonstrate to Universal that Mattel should be running MOTU and letting them turn the brand into a license to print money for whoever owns it, while under the control of (or at least while getting heavy input from) the toy company who created the brand to begin with.
@@Canoby I agree with all you said and I recall Scott mentioning in another video that Mattel will get first rights to refuse. My question is based on ‘what will a MOTU under Universal look like’? Will there be characters they can’t use because of some legal issue with its creation/genesis/origin? Will there be no noticeable difference other than Universal can redesign the characters as it sees fit and a different artistic take because of that redesign and manufacturer’s style?
@@IsleOMisfitToys This would certainly be an interesting court case
yup. A video on that is coming soon
