When this album released, I legitimately thought it was the end for me. I had genuinely thought I wasn’t gonna live to 21. I wanted this to be my last song. Then my mom got back into the Strokes, and that’s when I started the association that this song wasn’t my end, but a beginning. It’s still a struggle but I’m getting better. Stay safe out there.

    Lyrics:
Up on his horse, up on his horse
Not gonna wake up here anymore
Listen one time, it's not the truth
It's just a story, I tell to you
Easy to say, easy to do
But it's not easy, well, maybe for you
Hope that you find it, hope that it's good
Hope that you read it, think that you should
Cuts you some slack as he sits back
Sizes you up, plans his attack
    Ah-da-da
    Drums please, Fab
And I got it all, I got it all
Waiting for me down on the street
But now you gotta do somethin' special for me
I'm gonna say what's on my mind
Then I'll walk out, then I'll feel fine
Yeah, I'm under his thumb, I'm on his back
I will not show my teeth too quick
I needed you there, I needed you there
    But I didn't know, I didn't know
    Go alone
    I'll go alone
    We'll go alone
    I'll go alone
Back from his trip, he's at the door
When he gets back, he's on the phone
    Innocent eye, innocent heart
No, it's not wrong, but it's not right
Innocent time out on his own
Not got gonna do that, I'm out of control
I was just bored playin' the guitar
Learned all your tricks, wasn't too hard
It's the last one now, I can promise you that
I'm gonna find out the truth when I get back
Gone now are the old times
Forgotten, time to hold on the railing
The Rubik's cube isn't solving for us
    Old friends, long forgotten
The old ways at the bottom
Of the ocean now has swallowed
    The only thing that's left
Is us, so pardon the silence
    That you're hearing is turning
Into a deafening, painful, shameful roar

Beautiful video. Sidenote; that outro is the saddest visual/audio clip I have ever witnessed. So happy in the moment of incredible loneliness. Much like the world around us in our darkest hour. Its going for "epic song" though so it will always wins in best song battles. Songs like Is This It or the Modern Age are not trying to be magnum opus's but are great in ways that this songs can never measure against. Effortlessly cool. Casual. Ode To The Mets is constructed, crafted, produced... you can feel that it has a lot of thought behind it.
Its like a Led Zeppelin song battle between Going To California and Achilles Last Stand. Pointless. Still love it all though

This song is about Julian's relationship with his father. His dad died in 2013, shortly after the release of "Comedown Machine," so the material on this album is first stuff Julian would have released with The Strokes since his father's death. His dad was a pretty big deal in the modeling world and likely cast a long shadow. He probably traveled all the time and was not very present while he was home. This is a common story for people (like myself) who grew up rich in NYC. Something that is unique to rich NYC culture is that life does not revolve around children the way it does in the suburbs. Kids like Julian grow up fast and jaded in NYC and they have the freedom of 20 something yuppies when they are 15. It's a bit of a head trip, because on the one hand your parents have given you this amazing life that everyone wants, but on the other hand they are never around and it's pretty clear that spending time with you is not their priority. Julian's early music really captured the thrill and pain of growing up like that, and it's great to see him reflecting back as an older man, and finally getting his Grammy in the process.

Saw the Strokes in Berlin in February 2020. They played Adults are talking for the first time and it blew me away. The whole concert was great. Shortly after corona came and concerts were no more. When the album finally came out I was immediately hooked on Ode to the meets, to a point where I would autistically listen to that song on repeat. For months. On my way to work and back home... just this song... Corona made the subways empty and the streets eerie. Ode To The Mets was my loyal companion in those weird weird times.

Everyone goes into their critical thinking of their brain when hearing this song. This song was my most played song in 2022. Liking or even loving this song is still an under appreciation of what this song does to one soul. For the longest time I wanted to put into words of what this song puts you in and still I cannot find a solid answer. This song is what makes me believe magic is real. The true beauty of life and death. The strokes really put themselves as GOATs with this. All I can say is that when I’m chilling with homies vibing and this song goes on, it’s as if we all have a moment of silence to truly enjoy the music. Not a sound to come out from us. Countless times people have came over to my place and thanked me with their kind hearts for hearing this song. I cannot take credit for I was not the one who made the song. Many people don’t even go into this genre of music. But something about this masterpiece is something more special. It shows a story of your own life as if you are listening to your life story unfold in front of your face. Not many songs can do this type of this sorcery. Ode to the Mets will always have a special place in my heart. The journey is still yet to be completed!

Since "The New Abnormal" came out in April, I've probably listened to it 20-30 times. I think this is their most "complete" album so far. I can hear how they have grown musically, thou they still retained their signature sound (like in "Bad Decisions"). I love how they left in Julian's comments made during the recording ("Drums, please, Fab..." "False...break..." etc.). Rick Rubin's influence is clearly felt on this album, but in a sense that he gave the guys courage to experiment, like with "At the Door" (the song has no drums for the first 3 minutes or so, but has some of Julian's best singing ever, with an ominous keyboard hum throughout). Also, making it their first video from the album takes some balls, when they could have gone with much safer "Eternal Summer", which is such a great tune. So great in fact, that even the fade out ending sounds so good, it could have been a hit song all on it's own. For me, it's a mix of waiting so long for their new stuff, and that what they recorded seems to be exactly the music I needed to hear at this stage of my life, that makes this album so good. Also, I'm the same age as them, so I guess that too is one of the reasons the music sounds as if it was custom tailored for me. In case you missed it from reading my comment, I REALLY LOVE THIS ALBUM from start to finish! Now all I have to do is to wait for this pandemic to pass, and then hear them live...(maybe in 2021).

Julian said he wrote it while waiting for a train after the Mets lost a match, and Morietti pointed out that it alludes to "something that you set your heart to, and that you love unconditionally but that continues to disappoint you".

The "restart button". Shows the hope that is destroyed after every season, and the desire to restart, only for the same result. 😢

    LYRICS 🥀🖤🥀
Up on his horse, up on his horse
Not gonna wake up here anymore
Listen one time, it's not the truth
It's just the story I tell to you
Easy to say, easy to do
But it's not easy, well maybe for you
Hope that you find it, hope that it's good
Hope that you read it, think that you should
Cuts you some slack as he sits back
Sizes you up, plans his attack
    [Spoken]
    Da-da-da
    Drums please, Fab
    [Pre-Chorus]
And I got it all, I got it all
Waitin' for me down on the street
But now you gotta do somethin' special for me
I'm gonna say what's on my mind
Then I'll walk out, then I'll feel fine
    [Chorus]
Yeah, I'm under his thumb, I'm on his back
I will not show my teeth too quick
I needed you there, I needed you there
    But I didn't know, I didn't know
    [Break]
    Go alone
    I'll go alone
    We'll go alone
    I'll go alone
    [Verse 2]
Back from his trip, he's at the door
When he gets back, he's on the phone
    Innocent eye, innocent heart
No, it's not wrong, but it's not right
Innocent time, out on his own
Not gonna do that, fuck, I'm out of control
I was just bored, playin' the guitar
Learned all your tricks, wasn't too hard
    [Chorus]
It's the last one now, I can promise you that
I'm gonna find out the truth when I get back
    [Outro]
Gone now are the old times
Forgotten, time to hold on the railing
The Rubik's Cube isn't solving for us
    Old friends, long forgotten
The old ways at the bottom of
    The ocean now has swallowed
The only thing that's left is us
So pardon the silence that you're hearing
It's turnin' into a deafening, painful, shameful roar

"innocent time out on his own. Not gonna do that, fuck, I'm out of control"
I don't know why this line gets me so much. It feels like the moment when the character of the song realizes that his past has now taken over his life. Like, realizing he has a problem (could be an adiction or some emotional issue) and that problem's root dates back from something that happened too long ago and seemed forgotten but it's still there, in the back of his head, and is still troubling him from the shadows. Sorry if it doesn't makes sense. I just felt the need to ramble about it and take it out

discovered them a few years ago then inevitably fell into the julian casablancas rabbit hole. this is one of those songs that i go back to every once in a while. even if it's not the best song to listen to when you're feeling blue, i find myself going back to this (& human sadness) a lot. it's just so devastatingly beautiful and touching and so... human. thats not something you can always achieve in music.
anyway, this is just an excuse to say how much i treasure this band and how i cant remember my life before knowing them (& julian esp)

I remember when this album came out april 2020, I remember sitting on a park bench doing homework with my sister and I randomly stumbled upon the strokes through my ex-girlfriends best friend, turns out I absolutely loved the album on its first lesson, the song Brooklyn Bridge caught my eyes, but man after listening to this album on repeat the past 2 years, this song is so unique its scary. There's a part of me that wishes I always knew about the strokes and followed their journey throughout, but I know this was my path, to find such an extremely talented band that has aged like Wine. I was very fortunate and blessed to see them live in Oct 2021 and they blew me away, I love you Julian + co.
