This match was insane, and is one of the best i've ever seen. It had everything and that's the beauty of volleyball. Both teams did an amazing job. It wasn't a semi-final, it was a final. I'm from Poland and i was super happy that we won, but jeeez, you guys were fantastic. At some point i really thought you'd win. We had a lot of problems reaching the finals and you were great throughout the tournament. If I remember correctly it was the only match you lost there (besides the one with Brazil, which didn't really count because you already knew you'd play in the semi-finals 😋)

I think in general it was the best match ive ever seen in my life. There was everything you can possibly expect from a world champs semi final. Emotions, great skill level, the crowd. I remember driving home from work that night during the fourth set, only listening to the review on the headphones. Also im lucky i wasnt fined for speeding xd, cuz i definitely should have been for that drive. Lucky for me, mr officer was probably watching the game at home i guess
I mean our team was playing basicly without left wing. Kurek carried this match on his shoulders. Of course in tie break Kubiak also put down important balls but Kurek earnd MVP on that match

Thank you Erik for responding to my request about this video! I can tell you that from Polish perspective this game should be the final. In the real final match Brazil didn't show even 10% of quality that USA showed in the semis. I hope we will play against each other soon! Greetings.

Thank you so much for the commentary! It's also awesome being able to see the game from this angle. 99% of the time it's just from the side view which means you don't get to see the lateral movements of the player and you can't really tell what's going on.

That match was the early final. It was tough with high quality of volleyball. Many fans were disappointed with the final of that championship, because it was much easier for the Poles to win the final than this match.

That -4 Celsius makes me feel like a wuss feeling cold in this 60 Fahrenheit Hawaiian winter 😅
The ball is moving so fast if it wasn’t for the replays I’d have no idea what was going on. What I can appreciate though, as a complete VB newb, from this angle is the synchronized split step (at 1:20 for example) USA consistently does when the ball is served. I’m sure it gets drilled into you guys or expected as “common sense” at this level but it made me replay it for sure, one of the many amazing things from this video 🤩

Thank you so much Erik! I was so upset when watching this semi, you guys could have won. From my opinion, I think starting up with Matt's serve was too risky even though he served really well at the end of set 4. If Micah started at 1, it could be huge difference.

I have to admit that as a polish fan, our games vs Team USA are always one of my favourites, absolutely nerve wracking, you guys are such fighters and always bring a piece of solid, modern volley to the court.
I was wondering if you had a team that you prefer or just don’t like to play against? (Like, idk, not a fan of Asian teams dynamics or maybe preferring to play versus big strong guys bc you’re used to that in Russia so it comes easier? No idea if things like that matter, sorry)

Love these videos! Do you think the US misses too many serves? Speraw claims that the numbers support the uber aggressive serving, but they seem like such a momentum killer.
good question. when you looks at the overall stats I would say most teams miss around the same number of serves. I support our philosophy and have complete confidence in our servers!

ive been a huge fan of yours every since i started playing libero myself a few years ago. i was originally really bummed out when i "lost" outside position in my club to a younger but way new taller player. You (and the other great liberos ofc) helped me stay motivated to keep playing and fall in love with volleyball again.

now that youve been playing in russia for many years how well do you speak russian yourself?
i know leon speaks very well, grozer is pretty okay, but ive never seen a clip of you (or matt anderson for that matter) speaking russian.

were you a libero in highschool? i feel like at 6'1 you shouldnt have played libero lol unless you were thinking ahead and knew u had a better chance at making professional since everyone else there is 7 feet. and great vids man i wish this channel existed in 2016 when i played you woulda made me so much better!

Any tips on players that haven't been in a proper team? I'm a senior and I've only been in casual, recreational teams. Next year I'll be going to college and if I make the team it would be my first proper and competitive volleyball team. Love from Puerto Rico!
I haven't even been on teams that play with systems, and do different kinds of plays. It's just set the ball to anyone and try to spike it, and if not then oh well what can you do

I just watched that match on Volleyball World channel as they've been uploading WC 2018 matches recently. That 5th set must have been the worst set Sander has ever played in his whole career. I feel bad for him. But yeah, I agree with you Erik, it was the best match of the championships. Who knows, maybe we'll get a repeat at this year's WC?

Erik, I hope you oblige me. 😁 I've long wondered why more and more liberos have begun shifting coverage from zone five to zone six. What could be the advantages to this shift?
Also, some teams use the two-libero system (one passer and one defender). I know at least one Italian coach who despises it very much. Do you have any thoughts on it?
It's easier imo to defend there, u are in the middle of the court, and u defend more
Since they are the best passers they can move and get the balls that the middles and outsides can’t get.
@MasahiroYanagida08 Clear. It's just that, to my knowledge, liberos had been moved to zone 5 for better attack coverage. When the libero position was introduced, liberos first covered zone 6. Later, coaches figured that the opponent's zone 4 attackers, to whom majority of the sets were given, could be best defended by positioning their best defenders (liberos) in zone 5. But then I know that some liberos are so good that even when they are in zone 6, they can still defend the best attackers well.
Maybe, Erik is one of the best in the world? 😁
Or maybe it's also because of the bick now being launched from the seam of zones 5 and 6? 🤷🏽♂️
@MasahiroYanagida08 Seriously? What do you use then in place of the zones? I hope it helps prevent conflict lines for the back-row defenders.
