Thanks for this breakdown and the wonderful explanation/demonstration. The Sthayi can also be considered to be based on Raga Kapi of Carnatic music, which has some similarity with Pilu. The alaap has komal gandhar in it and seems to give the shade of Desh-Malhar that was used by M S Subbulakshmi too (e.g. in the first part of her version of the Hanuman Chalisa) - some people consider that to be more like Desh Malhar rather than Desh itself though it is often credited as Desh (to my knowledge, she herself never said what it was). Given Rahman's greater exposure to Carnatic music at that time, these are the likely influences on the song.
