    Excellent piece and sage advice. After years of considering that prints would be of little value, since most my photos are intended for just me, I recently discovered the value (and joy) of printing. I had always noticed that family and friends responded much more enthusiastically to prints, versus viewing on a screen. Getting a printer changed my perspective on just about everything. I look at each image more analytically to determine whether it is “worth” printing. Those that I think are “worthy” are looked at and edited much more critically. I couldn’t possibly afford to frame all of my best prints, nor do I have wall space, but I keep them in a binder. After they have enjoyed their corporeal existence for a while, I start to consider which are my best-of-the-best, to be destined for better papers, larger sizes, and framing. Truly a “game-changer” for me.

      In the video it's not very clear about the cost.If you don't mind do you have an idea of how much does it cost monthly or on a year? and what is the number of print you made for this price? It will be helpful for me and maybe for others.

    Thanks very much for this Adam,
    You have convinced me (after a LOT of nagging from my friends, followers and even my Dad) that I should be printing my work (& dare I say it even considering selling some too!).
    This vlog has done it for me, I am about to buy the very printer you have suggested (Canon PRO 300) & I WILL set up a studio & finally show off some of my work in a way that does it justice.
    Vlogs like this provide exactly the inspiration & some of the answers to the technical & cost attributed questions that I had in my own mind.
    Doubts are now eliminated, I am going for it.
    Thanks very much, & keep on keeping on.
    Best,
    Nick

    The Canon iX6850, an A3+ printer is the best printer ever and such great value. You can get one for under £250. It prints smaller sizes too. If it is for personal use and not for printing to sell, then basic good quality inkjet photo paper is all you need to make great prints for the home and friends. Super value frames can be bought from places like Ikea (other stores are available). The printer also takes just 5 value cartridges, so it is not expensive to run. Printing adds a whole new enjoyment to the hobby of photography!

    Thanks for a good video as always. I got my Canon Pro-300 early this year and it's my first real photoprinter and I'm so glad I invested in it. You can get your images fast out on the market and best of all you can try out new papers before you go to your lokal print shop and print huge expensive photos.

    I have the Pro 300 and have just started printing my work at home. There is a great feeling when you touch the entire photo process yourself. I am now experimenting with different papers and finish to see what I like for certain types of images so it was nice to hear you giving that suggestion. The increase of exposure 1\3 is something that I had not done and now know why some images don’t turn out the way I envision them, thanks Adam.

    I've carried on from seeing the print in the developer then fix then stop bath in the darkroom. Its the most exciting bit of photography holding the actual image in your hands. Digital is the same and more immediate but the satisfaction is the same. I still get a buzz when i post process and print the final image out. Another excellent vid Adam and for me an important part of photography.

  • @photomcphotofacepoole1286

    Thanks Adam for this great video on printing. I agree that a photograph doesn’t have to be printed to make it a photograph, but printing is important. I lack wall space, so each year, I’ve taken to selecting my top photographs of the year - some years less than 10; other years I’ve had 12 - and printing them to put in an album. Every few years I might also print them in a book. It does mean they’re not always on display, but I can look at them whenever I want and show to others. I think this is certainly better than them living in the dark recesses of hard drives or on the cloud and only seeing the light of day through social media. I’m going to rewatch some of your other videos on printing. I also lack the space to house a printer. If I ever manage to sell a few prints, then maybe I can one day justify the investment and somehow make space. But my work towards selling prints is a work in progress. I am thinking of exhibiting in a local pub, which exhibits the work of local artists, but has yet to exhibit the work of a photographer. I would have to invest in getting the prints made, mounted and framed. I don’t expect it to be a money-making venture and do expect to lose money, but I think it would be good to get my work in front of a few people.

    Fantastic video! I am inspired. For me, printing images is a somewhat familiar but neglected frontier. I’ve always liked printing images, but have not done so for many years because of the cost. The cost no longer bothers me as much as it once did, mostly because Epson Eco Tank has brought down the per page cost for necessary text and general purpose Ink Jet printing. I recently printed some photos, framed, and gave them for gifts. It was very satisfying. It felt like a continuation of the photography process. I am eventually going to get a dedicated photo printer and set sail again on that journey. The cost will be substantially higher than the Epson Eco Tank printing, but a dedicated photo printer is well worth the money because of the value of what is being printed.

    With you 100% Adam. I invested in a better A3+ printer last Black Friday and I love it. Even using 'cheap' OEM paper gives great results, matte and semi-gloss, and then for the real keepers I use Fotospeed papers with their personal profiles. My error rate has dropped and I am seeing things I missed when viewing on screen. Like someone else said, I need more walls but having the prints in a box to get out and look at is still a zillion times better than scrolling on screen. As always, sensible and relevant content Adam, thank you.

    I dont mind if canon suports... your presentation is just exellent & perfect indeed. After many years of fashion design I am starting a new field (I am 57 years old)... not for livelihood haha. But as a designer I love things to be perfect. I watched a lot about printers and mostly about the pro 200. lately i am convinced to put more money for the pro 300 JUST NOT TO REGRET IT... REGRETS KILLS. And already chacking the pro- 1000 ( the amount of the ink is more then the pro-300... and the more of colors... my smartphone cost almost the same... so really why not ?!? --THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH !!!

    So much content out there about taking photos and editing photos, and hardly anything about printing. Thank you for making this video. Printing your work makes you a better photographer, if your work is only ever viewed on a screen, you're losing out on so much. Aside from digital, I also shoot film and scan my negatives, I don't yet develop my own film, although I have tried it and it is something I could see myself doing. First though I would like to take care of my own prints, currently use a 3rd party (I work at at university so I get a good discount at the art print lab) which is handy, but I want to be a part of the whole process. Not just pressing the shutter button.

  • @dianeschuller
    @dianeschuller Před rokem +3

    As I've said before I'm a huge proponent of printing our photos. It completes the process plus it's a feeling like no other to actually see and hold a tangible image. I appreciate all the information you share here about self-printing. But, I don't think we should be talking as if printing ourselves is THE way. It is expensive plus a whole new learning curve. There is nothing wrong with sending our artwork to a pro lab. I use WHCC but there are many which produce a very high quality product and it doesn't require a huge investment in printing equipment and supplies. I hope you convince many more people to actually get their images in print!

    There are digital images and there are photos. They're not the same thing. Whether that matters is a personal choice but I agree that printing your work rather than farming it out will make you a better photographer (as will processing RAW images--I mainly use a DxO/Topaz workflow). It's also a real joy seeing your prints emerge (assuming you nailed it--printing is an art in itself and you can't expect perfection every time). Virtually any current printer can produce acceptable results but the 13" and larger ones (with their multiple pigment-based inks) from Canon and Epson really expand the possibilities for producing archival prints when A4/letter-size just isn't enough for the image (as you point out, there are images that just don't look right large, plus many potential customers don't have the display space for larger prints). When going larger, I considered Canon (having had a few of them but not impressed with their customer support) and Epson printers and decided on the Epson P900 over the P700 as although the P900 costs a bit more, the ink is much cheaper by volume/print and it's nice to have A2 capability (plus the prints are phenomenal). Paper choices are indeed daunting--I have over 50 papers "in stock" and I'm still trying to determine the best ones for particular images. My "default" choice is Epson Ultra Premium Luster (semi-gloss) but some images just look better on baryta, matte, metallic, or other papers.

    I bought the Pro10S Adam after seeing it was your initial printer of choice and I'm still refining my workflow, mainly around paper choices. I do like the Platinum Gloss Art Fibre for my black and white images but still not settled on a matt paper yet and something for the odd colour image I do. I agree with your comments about printing as there is a great sense of satisfaction seeing an image in print as all that effort is not designed for a mobile phone screen, it deserves to be up on a wall
    ps I have a print here to send you if you still want it 🙂

Certainly something I will invest in and do in the future to complete the photo process, so tired of social media so having hard copies will be a refreshing change 🙂🙂

    Prints are more satisfying to look at. You know you got some great prints when find yourself staring at them and letting your eyes wander through them even though you've seen them hundreds of times.
    More reasons to print small if you are selling prints: trailers and RVs. I sell prints at a local event a few times a year and learned that having small prints is great for people who are out traveling and don't have much space. It's also easier to display more prints if you have limited space at an event. Having a variety of prints makes people stay at your display longer however at some point having too many options can overwhelm people on making a choice.
    I haven't tried making prints myself. I've been using Mpix and recently tried using Printique. The prints I've gotten from them have been satisfying but they don't have that many options for different types of papers.
    Thank you for the video. Once I sell through more of my current printed images I'll start looking into getting a photo printer.

My current one is A3+ and tbh the field I work in (event and wedding), selling A3+ to a client is rare or difficult, but the concept of selling a 25x A4 in a archival box is actually something they would like. And then when it comes to personal work or my kids needing to print something for school... it's always A4.

    Hi Adam. I am both in and out of agreement with this thesis. Sure, prints are great to have - I grew-up taking film photos, so every one was a print (I did not use slides). I appreciate you are talking of "giant" prints; nevertheless they were prints. I nowadays far prefer to see most photographs on a screen. I also now prefer electronic delivery for books (text and talking), music (delighted to have ditched the now-trendy clicky-scratchy LPs and wowy-fluttery cassettes). But I also prefer to see my photographs on crystal-clear, back-lit screens (after-all, is that not what slide-film users aspired to in the 1960s/70s?) Back-lit, room-size delivery what was they boasted of then to those of us without that facility, anyway. (NB slides were a more expensive method of photographic display - paper albums were not cheap but, at least, cheaper). I can now keep my entire photographic collection on my NAS (Network-Attached Server) drive (plus back-ups, of course) and view everything on my mobile 'phone, my tablet, my PC screen or my 50" television screen - thus treating everyone in the room to whatever I wish to inflict upon them! (Yes, evil grin, there). With portable devices, I can view my images anywhere in the World and show others - or set a new directory on my NAS and allow others (again globally) access, so they can see / judge etc my work.
    Now, your "giant" prints. Again, I generally prefer electronic displays. They illuminate my images in dark areas without the need for an above wall-light, which then reflects off the frame-glass (I know low-reflection glass is available). I do not have to pay for zillions of frames, plus the printing - I can put the money to e-displays. AND when I want to swap the displayed image(s) it is free and very easy.
    So, I am not against anyone having large prints - do as you wish and be happy. But, for me, I only print large to put images in exhibitions. Then I put them away, until I need to make a new selection for a new exhibition. So, yes, I do display my images - some on paper - but, overall, I far prefer e-displays. Thanks for this and take care.

    Great video, thank you. Your framing looks lovely, and I know this video is about printing, but it draws me to comment on the really annoying move away from glass and instead to cheap-looking and cheap-performing perspex. I can see the advantage of having a lighter product to hang on the wall, and one that is easier to ship (no glass breakage), but the perspex scratches almost as soon as you look at it. Please tell me perspex isn't the new normal for framing. It's ridiculous - who wants scratches all over their gorgeous framed prints? Let's hope someone develops a cross between glass and perspex so we get the best of both worlds.

    Thanks Adam, I found that really useful. I'm trying to decide whether or not to print my own images at the moment. Not to sell them (yet) but just because I want to experience what it's like to actually have that physical photograph in my hands and know that I've done the whole process. I've got my 50th birthday coming up in a few weeks and got a little bit of money coming my way too! Not enough for the Pro 300 though unfortunately. Probably about £500. The thing is, I can't ever see me printing any larger than A4. Would I still need a larger printer capable of printing up to A2? Seems a bit of a waste to me.

      I've been printing approximately that size (8x12", framed 12x16") and I've found even a "small" print like that is still large enough to be very striking with a decent matte and frame 🤔

    Hi Adam, that was a really good summation from the perspective of someone selling images. However having owned photo printers and early on done exactly as you suggest as an amateur given away prints as gifts but last year I had to dump my perfectly good Canon Pro 900 printer in the recycling because I was unable to replace the print head even working through the local Canon agent. I gave all my paper to the local photographic club as well as any ink I had left over , which the club was very happy to receive. But honestly I just can’t go down that track again when I’m just not giving the printer a beating and getting my moneys worth before it goes on the fritz. Don’t get me wrong if Canon were to give me an A3+ printer then hell yeah but I’m just going to have to place myself at the mercy of the local print shop which I’ll agree isn’t so satisfying but gets the job done. As a passing comment when is the YT photo community going to stop quoting Ansel Adams as if no decent photogs have existed since, no disrespect to Mr Adams of course ?

    I have always printed my pictures, not all of them, but just the ones that are special to me, since I retired my print size dropped from A3+ A3 to A4 the price of the ink and paper was more than my pension so I had to economise, you are right you must at least print some of your pictures but it's so easy not to these days, but I can see the day coming when nobody will print anything, I often wonder how many so called pro photographers on here who have never printed a picture yet and they spend thousands on lenses and cameras. Thank you for you views on this matter..

      Agree with this 100%, as a pretty below average talented amateur snapper the ink cost would not be sustainable. I get reasonable (just) results from my all in one cheapy printer with third party ink, no good for pro's though.

    For people who make a living with photography or pursue it as a full time hobby this all makes sense.... For a hobby photographer with a couple of hours on the week end to shoot a couple of clouds over the beach this is an impossible dream. Ansel Adams? There are many great modern photographers with great ideas without having to resort back to a man who used what is now pre-historic technology. Would a modern painter use the same canvas and paint and technology as Leonardo?

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  Před 11 měsíci

      You can print them up to any size you want. The only difference is how close you can view it. At A3+ it will look more than reasonable unless you stick your face in it.

    Great video! I used to think that it was Ansel Adams who said that a print is the rightful inheritance of every photograph, but I can't source its either I made it up or someone else did. I wouldn't go that far, but matting, framing, and hanging my best images on the wall is the creme brûlée at the end of a fine meal.
    I have a couple of questions. For your pano prints, do you use paper on a roll or have you dedicated pano paper? I ask in part because for panos I only have paper on a roll and it is so curled up that it is a difficult task getting to to flatten out enough to go through the printer (same one as yours). The other question concerns your cutting board. Can you share the make and model? Cheers, Adam. Keep up the great work.

    Thank you Adam but it's not very clear about the cost. In an other video you said the opposite of this one if I understood well. I know it's difficult to give a price as you said but between the 2 videos I don't know if for a non pro photographer it's interesting to have a printer at home? Recently my daughter said that she would be delighted to have a print of some of my pictures and makes me realise that as you said print is the final process of an image. An other question, I would like to make a book with my pictures, a simple one just to be able to look at them if they cut electricity 😂Maybe you've done a video about that?

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  Před rokem +2

      I’ve said for a while that printing is a form of backup in the face of digital collapse.
      My over arching point is that there is definitely a financial cost to printing. Over time if you print enough , printing at home makes monetary sense. The value is different though. For me it was important (and valuable) to control the process from start to finish as soon as I possibly could…..regardless of how many sales or how often I printed.
